Chapter 249: Blood, Boundaries, and a Broken Name

Owen frowned, feeling a mix of guilt and resentment toward Yunice, but he didnโ€™t want to speak ill of her anymore. Then Lily suddenly thought of something. โ€œI heard Paulโ€™s always been trying to get close to Carl. When it comes to connections, weโ€™re still closer to Carl than he is. If Elsie really becomes Carlโ€™s goddaughter, he might even hand the project over to Paul.โ€

โ€œIf Paul owes Elsie a favor, he wonโ€™t be able to ignore her anymore. Taylor canโ€™t compareโ€”sheโ€™s just putting on a front with that fake marriage.โ€

Seeing Owen remain silent, Lily pushed harder. โ€œTaylorโ€™s only advantage is that paper marriage. She and Paul donโ€™t even have feelings for each other. Elsieโ€™s the one who got hurt.โ€

โ€œSo Taylor can steal the man, but weโ€™re not allowed to compete fairly? Just waitโ€”once the Powell family sees what Elsieโ€™s capable of, theyโ€™ll kick Taylor out and take our Elsie back.โ€

Owen still said nothing. In his heart, he didnโ€™t think Paul was a good man. And in situations like this, the sunk cost fallacy shouldnโ€™t drive decisions. The best thing Elsie could do now was cut her losses and find someone better.

But Elsie aimed too high. She refused to lower her standards. All she wanted was Silverburghโ€™s so-called prince.

Seeing Owen still unwilling to speak up, Elsie pouted and clung to his arm. โ€œOwen, help me. Please?โ€

Right at that moment, Oscar walked inโ€”and saw the whole thing. โ€œWhat the hell are you doing?โ€ he burst into the room, furious, yanking Elsie away.

Lily stood up in confusion, looking innocent. Oscar pointed at Elsie and shouted, โ€œWhat was that? What were you just doing? Who were you hanging all over?โ€

Elsieโ€™s eyes went wide. Tears shimmered at the edges, like sheโ€™d just been gravely insulted.

Lily slapped Oscar on the arm. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong with you? You study too much and lost all your common sense? Thatโ€™s your sister! Whatโ€™s wrong with her holding her brotherโ€™s arm?โ€

Owen stood up fast. โ€œOscar, I know you donโ€™t like Elsie, but that was out of line! What are you even accusing us of? If you donโ€™t apologize to Elsie right now, donโ€™t bother calling yourself my big brother again!โ€

โ€œOwen!โ€ Lily scolded softly. โ€œThatโ€™s too muchโ€ฆโ€

Oscar had only just snapped out of his shock. He hadnโ€™t expected Owen and Elsie to be this closeโ€”close enough that Owen would rather sever ties with his real brother than let her take a single insult.

Oscar didnโ€™t apologize. He said nothing and walked out of the room. Owen opened his mouth but didnโ€™t speak. He was both angry and uneasy. He wanted to stop Oscarโ€”but part of him still thought he hadnโ€™t done anything wrong. He thought it was over.

Later that afternoon, Oscar came down for lunch. But Owen and Elsie didnโ€™t join him. Owen acted like nothing happened. โ€œOscar, Elsie and I arenโ€™t eating at home today.โ€

Oscar said coldly, โ€œGot plans?โ€

Owen answered. โ€œElsieโ€™s birthday is coming up. Weโ€™re going to check out venues for her party.โ€

Oscar set down his utensils, his face growing colder. โ€œWhen?โ€

Owen hesitated. โ€œMay twenty-eighth.โ€

Oscar looked past him at Elsie, who was hiding behind Owen pretending to be innocent. โ€œThatโ€™s Yuniceโ€™s birthday. Youโ€™re seriously going to steal even that from her?โ€

Owen frowned. โ€œNo one remembers Elsieโ€™s real birthday, so we thought she could celebrate on the same day as Yunice. Theyโ€™re sistersโ€”itโ€™s not that big a deal, right?โ€

Oscar said, โ€œWho wants to share the spotlight on their birthday?โ€

Owen went quiet, then muttered, โ€œIsnโ€™t Elsie the one who got the short end of the stick? Sheโ€™s the one borrowing someone elseโ€™s day. She never complained. Youโ€™re just playing favorites.โ€

Oscar raised his voice. โ€œSo I treat my real sister well, and thatโ€™s favoritism? Do you even hear yourself right now?โ€

To Owen, Oscar was just nitpicking and deliberately making things hard for Elsie, which only made him more determined to protect her. He took Elsieโ€™s hand and left the Saunders home with her.

Oscar lost all appetite. He got up and went straight to the Saunders Hospital. He had no idea that this visit would shake the entire place. Oscar cornered Owen and Elsie at the hospital and, in front of them both, slammed down a thick stack of documents. His chest heaved with rage. โ€œNo wonder this hospitalโ€™s been in decline. Owen, this is how youโ€™ve been running it?โ€

He jabbed a finger at Elsie. โ€œWhat the hell is she? She never studied a single day of medicine, and you let her treat real patients like test subjects! You two have ruined the hospitalโ€™s reputation!โ€

Owen stared in shock at the clean, clear stack of documents, completely stunned. โ€œOscarโ€ฆ where did you get these? I already destroyed the originalsโ€ฆโ€
