Chapter 248: A Name for Sale

Carl asked calmly, โ€œSo whatโ€™s your great solution, then?โ€

The question bounced back at her. Lily dodged it. โ€œI donโ€™t know anything about these things. I canโ€™t think of a good plan. If only someone kind could take Elsie under their name, thatโ€™d be idealโ€ฆโ€ She sighed in frustration. โ€œYuniceโ€ฆ Yunice?โ€

Yunice snapped out of it and saw Victor looking at her. โ€œSorry,โ€ she said, apologetic. โ€œI spaced out. Could you repeat the question?โ€

On the other end of the call, Carl let out a long, thoughtful โ€œHmm.โ€ Then he asked, โ€œAnyone in mind?โ€

Lily hesitated, then forced herself to say it. โ€œCarl, you donโ€™t have kids. Youโ€™ve never married. No wife to run it by. Couldnโ€™t you let Elsie be registered under your name for a few years?โ€

โ€œI promise,โ€ she added, โ€œjust a few years. Once we get her on her feet, weโ€™ll take her out of your household.โ€

Carl let out the faintest hint of a mocking smile. โ€œSorry, but Iโ€™ve already acknowledged a goddaughter.โ€

To his surprise, Lily lit up. โ€œEven better! Once Elsie is part of your family, theyโ€™ll be like sisters! Iโ€™m sure theyโ€™ll get along so well!โ€

Carl said, โ€œIโ€™ve also got a godson. A brother and sister are already more than enough. They might not want another sibling.โ€

Lily pressed on. โ€œThen just add Elsie. Young people bond easily. Itโ€™ll be fine. Back when Elsie joined the Saunders family, she didnโ€™t know her brothers at all. Now theyโ€™re like real family.โ€

Carl let out a dry laugh. โ€œYou know what they say, one monk fetches water, two carry it, three get nothing to drink. I only have so much to give. Two kids is just right. Add one more and I wonโ€™t be able to share it fairly.โ€

Lilyโ€™s voice shot up. โ€œYouโ€™re really going to split your assets between two godchildren?โ€ Realizing sheโ€™d overreacted, she quickly added, โ€œI didnโ€™t mean it like that. I just think youโ€™re still young, Carl. You might have your own kids someday. Isnโ€™t it a bit rash to make that kind of decision? Raising someone elseโ€™s childโ€ฆ itโ€™s not the same.โ€

She clutched her phone tightly. Her heart ached just thinking about it.

How could Carl give away his inheritance to two children who had no blood relation to him?

Heโ€™d rather give it to outsiders than give Elsie a chance?

Lily wasnโ€™t ready to give up. โ€œCarl, what if I talk to your godchildren directly? Let me meet them. Iโ€™m sure theyโ€™ll be willing to help Elsie.โ€

Carl glanced at Victor and Yunice, who were still quietly discussing the project across the room. โ€œTheyโ€™re busy these days. Maybe in a few days.โ€

Lily pressed him. โ€œA few days? I really canโ€™t wait, Oscarโ€™s deadline is too short.โ€

Carl said, โ€œTwo days. Youโ€™ll meet them then.โ€

Lily agreed right away and hung up, thrilled.

Oscar opened his bedroom door and saw Lily walk excitedly into Owenโ€™s room. Inside, Lily, Owen, and Elsie shut the door and began talking.

Oscarโ€™s face fell. He hadnโ€™t expected that after ten years away, heโ€™d be treated like the outsider in his own family.

Lily sat down with Owen and Elsie to plan. โ€œElsie, if you can get Carlโ€™s godchildren to accept you, heโ€™ll register you under his name. That would make you his legal daughter. You could even inherit some of his estate someday.โ€

Lily lowered her voice and said seriously, โ€œYou have to give this everything youโ€™ve got.โ€

Owen was thrilled. โ€œMom, youโ€™re amazing. I never wouldโ€™ve thought of this. Donโ€™t worry, Elsie is kind, polite, and sweet. Sheโ€™s just as good as anyone else.โ€

Lily nodded. She didnโ€™t think it would be hard at all. She couldnโ€™t wait. Why wasnโ€™t it two days already?

But before the second day even arrived, Elsie was already in tears. Paulโ€™s wedding was tomorrow.

Elsie sobbed, barely able to breathe. โ€œEven if I get registered under Carlโ€™s nameโ€ฆ what difference does it make? Paulโ€™s getting everything tomorrow โ€“ love, money, status. He wonโ€™t ever think of me againโ€ฆ.โ€

Neither Owen nor Lily responded. Paulโ€™s wedding was set in stone. There was no stopping it.

Owen felt guilty. โ€œElsie, itโ€™s my fault. I misjudged him. I never shouldโ€™ve let you get involved with him after the way he treated Yunice. Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

Lily sighed. โ€œAnd Yunice, too. She knew exactly what kind of person Paul was. But did she everโ€ฆ
