Chapter 248: A Name for Sale
Carl asked calmly, โSo whatโs your great solution, then?โ
The question bounced back at her. Lily dodged it. โI donโt know anything about these things. I canโt think of a good plan. If only someone kind could take Elsie under their name, thatโd be idealโฆโ She sighed in frustration. โYuniceโฆ Yunice?โ
Yunice snapped out of it and saw Victor looking at her. โSorry,โ she said, apologetic. โI spaced out. Could you repeat the question?โ
On the other end of the call, Carl let out a long, thoughtful โHmm.โ Then he asked, โAnyone in mind?โ
Lily hesitated, then forced herself to say it. โCarl, you donโt have kids. Youโve never married. No wife to run it by. Couldnโt you let Elsie be registered under your name for a few years?โ
โI promise,โ she added, โjust a few years. Once we get her on her feet, weโll take her out of your household.โ
Carl let out the faintest hint of a mocking smile. โSorry, but Iโve already acknowledged a goddaughter.โ
To his surprise, Lily lit up. โEven better! Once Elsie is part of your family, theyโll be like sisters! Iโm sure theyโll get along so well!โ
Carl said, โIโve also got a godson. A brother and sister are already more than enough. They might not want another sibling.โ
Lily pressed on. โThen just add Elsie. Young people bond easily. Itโll be fine. Back when Elsie joined the Saunders family, she didnโt know her brothers at all. Now theyโre like real family.โ
Carl let out a dry laugh. โYou know what they say, one monk fetches water, two carry it, three get nothing to drink. I only have so much to give. Two kids is just right. Add one more and I wonโt be able to share it fairly.โ
Lilyโs voice shot up. โYouโre really going to split your assets between two godchildren?โ Realizing sheโd overreacted, she quickly added, โI didnโt mean it like that. I just think youโre still young, Carl. You might have your own kids someday. Isnโt it a bit rash to make that kind of decision? Raising someone elseโs childโฆ itโs not the same.โ
She clutched her phone tightly. Her heart ached just thinking about it.
How could Carl give away his inheritance to two children who had no blood relation to him?

Heโd rather give it to outsiders than give Elsie a chance?
Lily wasnโt ready to give up. โCarl, what if I talk to your godchildren directly? Let me meet them. Iโm sure theyโll be willing to help Elsie.โ
Carl glanced at Victor and Yunice, who were still quietly discussing the project across the room. โTheyโre busy these days. Maybe in a few days.โ
Lily pressed him. โA few days? I really canโt wait, Oscarโs deadline is too short.โ
Carl said, โTwo days. Youโll meet them then.โ
Lily agreed right away and hung up, thrilled.
Oscar opened his bedroom door and saw Lily walk excitedly into Owenโs room. Inside, Lily, Owen, and Elsie shut the door and began talking.
Oscarโs face fell. He hadnโt expected that after ten years away, heโd be treated like the outsider in his own family.
Lily sat down with Owen and Elsie to plan. โElsie, if you can get Carlโs godchildren to accept you, heโll register you under his name. That would make you his legal daughter. You could even inherit some of his estate someday.โ
Lily lowered her voice and said seriously, โYou have to give this everything youโve got.โ
Owen was thrilled. โMom, youโre amazing. I never wouldโve thought of this. Donโt worry, Elsie is kind, polite, and sweet. Sheโs just as good as anyone else.โ
Lily nodded. She didnโt think it would be hard at all. She couldnโt wait. Why wasnโt it two days already?
But before the second day even arrived, Elsie was already in tears. Paulโs wedding was tomorrow.
Elsie sobbed, barely able to breathe. โEven if I get registered under Carlโs nameโฆ what difference does it make? Paulโs getting everything tomorrow โ love, money, status. He wonโt ever think of me againโฆ.โ
Neither Owen nor Lily responded. Paulโs wedding was set in stone. There was no stopping it.
Owen felt guilty. โElsie, itโs my fault. I misjudged him. I never shouldโve let you get involved with him after the way he treated Yunice. Iโm sorry.โ
Lily sighed. โAnd Yunice, too. She knew exactly what kind of person Paul was. But did she everโฆ
