Chapter 78
Freya knew Johanna was on pins and needles. After all, the following day was the companyโs final deadline. If Kieran didnโt invest, the Dawson Group would be bankrupt. Kieran probably felt the same pressure.
โOkay, Iโll head over,โ Freya said. Jarrett made way for her, ushering Freya into the car.
As Freya got in, Johannaโs previously sycophantic expression cracked into a disdainful sneer. โPutting on airs, are you? Still ended up getting into Mr. Suttonโs car, didnโt you?โ
Twenty minutes later, inside the Sutton Mansion, Jarrett welcomed Freya through the grand doors of the Sutton family home. When Freya stepped inside, a wave of familiarity washed over her. In another life, she had slaved away there, attending to Kieran and Audreyโs every need. Yet, her end had been nothing short of tragic. Every corner of this place bore the marks of her past subservience.
Freya walked in with a blank expression, noticing that the dinner table hadnโt been set. However, Audrey welcomed Freya warmly into the living room to sit. Kieran seemed to have anticipated Freyaโs arrival, his eyes briefly flickering with mockery.
During the day, Freya had been cozying up to Ronan. And at night, she was there to charm Audrey. She was a snake trying to swallowโฆ
โFreya, you finally made it,โ Audrey smiled, saying, โYou have no idea how weโve been faring without you these days. I havenโt been eating or sleeping well, and neither has Kieran.โ
Kieran frowned from across the room, disagreeing with Audreyโs words. Freya didnโt believe for a second that Kieran longed for her return.
She smiled and asked, โAudrey, did you need something from me today?โ
โKieran has a craving for fried fish recently. No matter how the chef makes it, he doesnโt like it. He always says you make it best. Why donโt youโฆ cook us dinner? I need to step out this evening, and you could stay over.โ
Hearing Audreyโs words, Freya scoffed. So, this was all about cooking dinner for Kieran. But it made sense. The old Freya always believed the way to a manโs heart was through his stomach. Being able to cook a meal for Kieran was once considered a great honor for her. The fried fish, with its intricate preparation, was something she had never attempted before. Kieran was notoriously picky, so she had gone out of her way to learn from a chef. She practiced until her fingers were sore and scarred, yet Kieran met her hard work with nothing but coldness and ridicule.
Freya said, โAudrey, I would have loved to cook for Mr. Sutton, but I accidentally injured my hand today. Iโm afraid I canโt prepare the fried fish properly.โ
โInjured? What happened?โ Audrey moved to inspect Freyaโs hand, but Kieran interjected with a sneer, โWhat else? It must have been from fighting.โ
โFighting?โ Audrey frowned.
Kieran glanced at the clock on the wall, noting, โItโs already six. If Ms. Dawson canโt cook, Iโll be leaving.โ With that, Kieran turned to walk away.
