Chapter 370

โ€œAnything else anyone wishes to add before we call it a day?โ€ Daemonikai rose to his feet, voice signaling dismissal.

The court was already stirring with movementโ€”robes rustling, chairs scrapingโ€”echoes of people ready to leave, the post-session chaos humming through the air.

โ€œActually, yes, Your Majesty,โ€ High Lord Gaff stood. โ€œItโ€™s about the eclipse moon night.โ€

Everywhere went quiet.

โ€œI think itโ€™s time we stop pretending it isnโ€™t around the corner and begin making real preparations."

โ€œItโ€™s been around the corner for years now, Lord Gaff,โ€ High Lord Belzebob countered, folding his arms.

โ€œOh please,โ€ Gaff shot back. โ€œAre we truly going to pretend we havenโ€™t noticed the repeated signs? The quarter moon has appeared more frequently in the past months than it should. No one knows exactly when it will come, but the signs are there. I believe itโ€™s time we stop delaying and start preparing.โ€

Daemonikaiโ€™s good mood withered entirely. Eclipse moon nightโ€”the very words made his shoulders tense. He would rather not think of it, not of the last, and certainly not of the one still to come. But Gaff, as the High Lord of Ceremonial Affairs, was right. Turning their heads would not banish what waited for them.

โ€œSit down,โ€ Daemonikai commanded.

Reluctantly, the council returned to their seats. And for the first time in a long while, they were going to address the elephant in the room.

โ€œWhat do you have, High Lord Gaff?โ€ Daemonikai asked.

โ€œThank you, Your Grace.โ€ Gaff cleared his throat, clearly uncomfortable. โ€œActually, I do have a suggestion. And I must sayโ€ฆ this is not only my opinion. A few of the other lords mentioned it, casuallyโ€ฆ while we were at the tavern, drinking.โ€

He looked toward the mentioned lords. Not one of them met his gaze. A few cleared their throats. A few looked at the floor.

Daemonikaiโ€™s patience thinned. โ€œGet on with it.โ€

Gaff braced himself. โ€œInstead of facing the night alone, we thoughtโ€ฆ we should call upon the werewolves for protection. We are allies, are we not? They could safeguard us just for that night.โ€

Murmurs rose, some at the ridiculousness of the suggestion, others considering.

โ€œAbsolutely not,โ€ Daemonikai snapped, silencing the hall. โ€œThe fewer who know of our vulnerability, the better. The humans already learned enoughโ€”and the damage they did with that knowledge was catastrophic. Yes, we now know it was one of our own who betrayed us, but that doesnโ€™t erase the fact that many of us were slaughtered by human blades.โ€

He swept a cold gaze across the court.

โ€œNow you suggest we trust werewolves? Beasts stronger than any human, more powerful by leagues. Even if they are our allies, how do we trust anyone on a night when we are utterly defenseless, when none of us can protect what we care for?โ€

โ€œBut with the Chalice, weโ€™ll have strength,โ€ High Lord Jakal pitched in.

โ€œAnd what ifโ€”just like that nightโ€”itโ€™s taken away?โ€ Daemonikaiโ€™s eyes bored into him, trying to keep his anger in check. They were only making a suggestion, and truthfully, there was some sense in what they said. But he did not wish to consider it, not after last time.

The mere thought of repeating that failure made bile rise in his throat.

โ€œDaemon, stay calm,โ€ Vladya murmured.

Daemonikai looked over and saw Vladya staring pointedly at his hand. He followed his gaze, seeing his claws had slipped out.

One deep breath. Two deep breaths.

His claws slipped back in.

Daemonikai straightened. โ€œThere will be no werewolves, no external forces. We will face eclipse moon night ourselves and form a unified planโ€”togetherโ€”to protect what remains of us. But we will not reveal our weaknesses to outsiders, no matter how strong the alliance, no matter how much we trust them. Trust is not armor. That is all for today.โ€

Rising, he marched out of court.

Sinai had been searching for Zaiper for over an hour before she finally found him in the woods, crouched beside the carcass of a freshly killed stag.

โ€œI bet you feel refreshed after that hunt, huh?โ€ she said, falling into step beside him as they started back toward their hideout. โ€œItโ€™s good to see you back on your feet.โ€

He didnโ€™t look at her. โ€œWhy are you being a pest, Sinai?โ€ he growled, forging ahead. โ€œWhat do you want?โ€

Still in a foul mood, clearly.

She matched his pace, choosing to ignore the snarl in his voice. โ€œItโ€™s about your secret hideoutโ€”the one weโ€™ve been trying to reach, but somehow havenโ€™t. At this rate, weโ€™ll be caught before we even get there.โ€

โ€œSinai.โ€

โ€œYes, my Lord?โ€

โ€œDo you know how long Iโ€™ve been preparing for a day like this? Even while hoping it would never come?โ€

How would she?

โ€œSeven hundred years,โ€ he said before she could speak. โ€œThatโ€™s how long. In that time, I spent fortunes and caution building a sanctuaryโ€”completely fortified, concealed, and nearly invincible. It lies deep underground, one of those places even the boldest wouldnโ€™t dare venture into.โ€

Thatโ€ฆ gave her a sliver of comfort.

โ€œBut how long until we reach it?โ€ she pressed. โ€œWeโ€™ve been running for weeks.โ€

โ€œAnd thatโ€™s where youโ€™re mistaken.โ€ His mood lifted a bit, a smug gleam sparking in his eye. โ€œWeโ€™ve been creating diversions, running, hiding, drawing them further and further from the truthโ€”making it seem like our destination is some far-flung place. In reality, the shelter lies in the heart of the city, close enough to monitor Ravenshadow and all my targetsโ€”while remaining utterly hidden from them.โ€

She blinked, impressed despite herself. This was actuallyโ€ฆ surprisingly smart.

โ€œSo, while they scatter their forces across Urai and beyond, sweeping even the smallest villages, we stay right under their nosesโ€ฆ.โ€ she mused aloud.

He nodded. โ€œRazarrโ€™s idea. I thought it was brilliant.โ€

But the moment Razarrโ€™s name passed his lips, his good mood evaporated. Whatever light had returned to him flickered out again.

Sinai stifled the urge to roll her eyes. Sheโ€™d be dead if he caught even a hint of it. It was almost laughableโ€”seeing someone as ruthless as Zaiper, a male who flinched at neither torture nor slaughter, undone by the death of a lover.

โ€œI do not feel such petty things.โ€

Yeah, right.

โ€œSo whatโ€™s the plan going forward?โ€ she asked, steering the conversation away from the sore spot. โ€œI have a suggestion. Once weโ€™re off the road, we lay low for a few months. Let things settle. Our numbers have dwindledโ€”we need to recruit. Find soldiers, nobles willing to join your causeโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI need to get my hands on Emeriel.โ€

Sinai was caught off guard. โ€œOโ€“kayโ€ฆ but thatโ€™s later, much, much later. Right now, we need safety. Believe me, Iโ€™d love to get my hands on her too, butโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo buts,โ€ he snapped as they stepped into a clearing. โ€œI know your little feuds with her, all your back-and-forths. But thisโ€”itโ€™s personal now. Daemonikai took something from me. I intend to return the favor.โ€

โ€œAnd how do you plan to do that?โ€

โ€œI still have a spy in the kingdom.โ€

Sinai started. โ€œI thought Vladya had all of them executed. One still lives!?โ€

He nodded once.

โ€œThatโ€™sโ€ฆ gods, thatโ€™s excellent news,โ€ she said, suddenly invigorated. โ€œWeโ€™ll know everything. Their movements, their weaknesses. This will change everything.โ€

โ€œYes. A hidden weapon,โ€ Zaiper stated. โ€œSheโ€™ll feed me everything I need to track Emeriel, and when the time is right, Iโ€™ll strike.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s not waste this opportunity. We should wait, recover, and plan properly,โ€ Sinai pleaded. โ€œPlease, Zaiper. Youโ€™re acting on anger. Youโ€™re not thinking this through.โ€

Zaiper moved without warning, seizing her by the throat, lifting her off her feet. He hurled her away.

Sinai shrieked as she flew through the air, her back striking a tree with a bone-jarring thud. Pain exploded down her spine, and for a moment, her lungs seized.

โ€œStay out of my way, whore.โ€ His eyes burned gray and yellow, his voice deeper. โ€œIf I ever want your opinion, Iโ€™ll come find you. Until then, donโ€™t stick your mouth where itโ€™s not needed.โ€

Coughing, gasping, Sinai pushed herself up, blood on her lips. โ€œEmeriel does that Soulbond thing where she calls Daemonikai with her mind whenever sheโ€™s in danger! Youโ€™ve seen it happen. You know what she can do! How do you plan to bypass that!?โ€ she screamed, coughing blood. โ€œIf you go through with this, youโ€™ll be leading the rest of your soldiers to their deaths!โ€

Zaiperโ€™s anger burned. โ€œI have reason to believe somethingโ€™s wrong with their bond. That night he went berserk, I was there. There was no recognition in his eyes, no awareness, only raw instinct. The night you shot her with your arrowโ€ฆ she didnโ€™t call to him then, did she?โ€

Sinaiโ€™s breathing slowed. No, she hadnโ€™t. The realization landed hard.

โ€œSomething is broken between them, and Iโ€™m counting on it,โ€ Zaiper growled. โ€œI will take Emeriel, and Daemonikai will pay for what heโ€™s done.โ€
