Chapter 305

Grand Lord Zaiper lounged in his living room, boots propped on a velvet footstool. A goblet of ale rested loosely in his hand as he watched the fire crackle lazily in the hearth. After leaving court, he spent hours downtown, carefully avoiding his home until well past midnight. He needed time to decide his next move, to strategize how best to deal with the Oracle. Until he reached a decision, he would avoid her.

And today, he had succeeded. Absently sipping his drink, he smiled, his eyes tracing the flickering flames. A knock shattered his peace. Frowning, he tilted his head; hushed murmurs came from outside.

Scowling, he set down his drink with a thud, pushing himself up. โ€œWhere the devil are all the servants and useless slaves?โ€ His mood soured as he strode to the door and threw it open. The Oracle stood there. He barely had time to step back before the old woman stormed inside.

โ€œYou impertinent little child!โ€ Fury radiated from her. โ€œHow dare you break this kingdom?โ€ She stomped her staff against the ground. An unexpected force slammed into Zaiper, lifting him off his feet and hurling him across the room. He crashed against the wall, pain flaring through his back as he hit the stone floor.

โ€œWhat the fuck!?โ€ Zaiper groaned, rolling onto his side. Wincing at the sharp pain in his tailbone, he gritted, โ€œYou should not abuse your powers like that, Oracle.โ€

She stepped forward, her golden-streaked eyes dilated and burning. โ€œIf you can abuse yours the way you have, then I shall do the same with mine.โ€ Raising her staff, she gripped it tightly. โ€œHow could you do something so despicable?โ€ Her voice was thick with disgust. โ€œCenturies ago, I foresaw many futuresโ€”some better than others, some darkerโ€”but none as vile as what you have made come to pass.โ€ She stomped her staff again; Zaiper flew across the room, colliding hard with the fireplace.

โ€œFfffuckkโ€ฆ!โ€ Agony lanced through his ribs, his entire body screaming in protest. โ€œYou are disgusting,โ€ the Oracle spat. โ€œThe embodiment of evil itself. How could you do this to your kingdom, to your fellow Grand Rulers? How could you do that to your own blood brother?โ€

Blood filled Zaiperโ€™s mouth, and he spat on the floor. โ€œOh, spare me the righteous outrage,โ€ he sneered. โ€œKristoff got what was coming to him for looking at what was mine.โ€

Her face twisted into something dark, sending a chill down Zaiperโ€™s spine. She lifted her staff; a blast of unseen force cracked through the air. Zaiper heard cracks a split second before his entire body seized in agony. Several bones had shattered. The pain was unbearable, ripping through him like fire and ice.

โ€œYou conniving old hag!โ€ he roared. โ€œThis will take weeks to heal, damn you!โ€

โ€œYou are a disgrace to the name Dragaxlov,โ€ the old woman declared. โ€œYour clan has long harbored ambitions of claiming the First Throne, but never have they stooped to such despicable acts to seize it. You wiped out an entire kingdom. Slaughtered younglings. Murdered your own brother.โ€

Zaiper groaned, spitting out blood. โ€œOne day, someone will take that cursed stick from you, Old Lady.โ€

โ€œThat someone will not be you.โ€ The Oracleโ€™s voice was colder, deadlier. โ€œCome clean to the kingdom. Confess your crimes and face the consequences.โ€

โ€œHow does โ€˜neverโ€™ sound?โ€ Zaiper drawled.

โ€œTell the people what you have done, or I will.โ€

Zaiper barked out laughter, ignoring the pain. โ€œYou canโ€™t do that, you withered hagspawn. You are not allowed to interfere,โ€ he reminded her, wiping blood from his mouth.

โ€œI can, and I will.โ€ Her golden eyes blazed. โ€œDo not mistake my restraint for weakness, Devilโ€™s spawn. I would gladly sacrifice my life to expose the darkness you have wrought. To cleanse this land of your corruption.โ€

Zaiperโ€™s smirk vanished. Surely, she does notโ€ฆ โ€œYou donโ€™t mean that,โ€ but his voice lacked its usual arrogance.

โ€œFoolish boy,โ€ she whispered, disdain lacing her tone. โ€œThe first pages of The Gods and Their Servants will tell you an Oracle does not speak idly. Every word I utter is weighed and measured.โ€

His heartbeat drummed against his ribs. โ€œYou expect me to confess? You expect me, Zaiper Dragaxlov, to walk to my own execution?โ€

โ€œWhat I want,โ€ the Oracle said coldly, โ€œis justice.โ€

โ€œYou cannot reveal secrets of that magnitude; the impact could kill you! Thatโ€™s right, I also know a bit about that damned book and your oath.โ€ He said smugly.

โ€œYes,โ€ she was unfazed. โ€œBut I will gladly die than let you get away with this.โ€

Zaiper gawked at her. She stepped back, her expression unreadable. โ€œI will grant you time to consider your choices, Grand Lord Zaiper. But know this: this matter will not rest. Justice will be served, with or without your cooperation.โ€

Turning to the door, she moved toward it. Zaiperโ€™s mind raced. There had to be a way to stop this. โ€œWait! I wish to strike a bargain!โ€

โ€œDenied.โ€ Her voice was calm. โ€œConsider your choices, Dragaxlov. I will return.โ€ She didnโ€™t glance back.

Anger overpowered panic. I will strangle her with my bare hands! He rose, or tried to. Pain, like moving water, rushed through him, forcing him to sink back to the ground.

โ€œWait! You cannot do this to me!โ€ He meant to shout, but the words came out as a ragged groan of pain.

The Oracle paused at the threshold. Angling her head, she cast a final glance over her shoulder. โ€œAnd while I am feeling generous, undo every foul enchantment you have woven to the Grand Kingโ€™s mind.โ€

Zaiper sat there, panting in pain. She knew of that too!? โ€œTear them from his mind, thread by cursed thread, until not a single trace of dark magic remains. Do not test my patience further, you spawn of darkness.โ€ Then, she vanished into the night.
