Chapter 304

Grand King Daemonikai paused, studying the Oracleโ€™s expression. The regret in her eyes was answer enough. โ€œLet me guess,โ€ he said. โ€œYou cannot tell me.โ€ The last shred of hope slipped from his grasp.

The Oracleโ€™s grip tightened on her staff. โ€œIโ€™m afraid this is something you must figure out on your own, Great Grand King.โ€ Daemonikaiโ€™s lips pressed into a thin line, his frustration evident.

Ahead, Emeriel grabbed Ackcira from behind, catching her off guard and sending her basket flying. Its contents scattered across the grass. Aekeira let out a startled yelp that quickly melted into full-blown laughter, accompanied by a fit of giggles.

โ€œThey are always so happy,โ€ he murmured. โ€œAs if they have never known a nightmare.โ€

The Oracle followed his gaze. โ€œTheir light shines so brightly, I doubt it could ever be extinguished. Princess Emeriel is much more than just a Syren, Soulbond, and Grand Queen. She has dormant powers.โ€

His brow furrowed. โ€œPowers?โ€

โ€œMore like a gift,โ€ she clarified. โ€œShe was created with themโ€”tied to your bond with her. They were supposed to awaken when you two finally, wholeheartedly committed to your bond. Only now, your bond isโ€ฆโ€

Powers? What kind of gift? Questions flooded his mind.

The Oracle turned, resuming her walk, and Daemonikai fell into step beside her.

โ€œI may not be able to tell you much about your condition, but I can tell you thisโ€”keep that princess as close to you as possible. And keep fighting for what you have,โ€ she glanced at him. โ€œWho knows? You may triumph in the end.โ€

By the time they reached the meadows, daylight had drastically diminished. The wind was softer here, carrying the scent of blooming flowers.

Daemonikai broke the silence. โ€œCan Vladya recover his soul without black magic?โ€

The Oracleโ€™s expression grew somber. โ€œOur kind is powerful. Many things are possibleโ€”if one is willing to lose something of great value in return. It is either dark magic or magical artifacts.โ€

Daemonikaiโ€™s heart sank.

โ€œThis will crush Vladya,โ€ he said. โ€œHe was so hopefulโ€ฆโ€

The Oracle hesitated. โ€œThere is a ritual I can attempt.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ Daemonikaiโ€™s gloom vanished. โ€œThat would beโ€”โ€

โ€œThe success rate is really low. Perhaps twenty percent,โ€ she interrupted firmly.

โ€œIf there is a success rate, then itโ€™s a chance worth taking,โ€ Daemonikai said. โ€œYou were the one who told me to have a little faith, were you not? Iโ€™m sure Vladya wouldnโ€™t hesitate. Heโ€™s come so far, and heโ€™s finally happy again. I hope what he has with Emerielโ€™s sister lasts. If he can get his soul back, thatโ€™s one less thing to worry about.โ€

โ€œHmm.โ€

Daemonikaiโ€™s gaze darkened. โ€œI still canโ€™t believe he performed Havสผzie de Baah that night. Nor can I believe the gods took but gave nothing back. His bondmate still died.โ€

The Oracle remained silent. Only after a long pause did she speak. โ€œThe world is not always as black and white as it seems, Grand King.โ€

Daemonikai rolled his eyes.

โ€œIโ€™m afraid this is where we part ways, Your Majesty,โ€ the Oracle said as they reached the towering entrance gates of the fortress.

Daemonikai halted. โ€œThank you for stopping by. Andโ€ฆ for waking.โ€

The old woman inclined her head, her silvery hair catching the last rays of light. She turned to leave, but hesitated.

โ€œHer next heat is close,โ€ she said suddenly, her black-and-gold eyes pinning his. โ€œVery close. A mini-heat, but may be as agonizing as a full one. If not more.โ€

Daemonikai tensed. That had been weighing on his mind, too, more than heโ€™d let on.

The thought of Emeriel suffering through something worse than her full heat two years ago bothered him greatly.

The Oracle pinned him with a serious look. โ€œListen to her body. Notice even the smallest detail. Then listen to your own, and simply be you. That is the only way you can help her.โ€

Committing those words to memory, his head bobbed once. โ€œI shall heed your warnings.โ€

A rare flicker of empathy entered her ancient eyes. โ€œI also apologize for the young princess you both lost,โ€ she said quietly. โ€œBut who knows? The gods may smile upon you and bless you with another. If not now, then somewhere in the future.โ€

A daughter. His child with Emeriel would have beenโ€ฆ a girl. It was a dagger to the chest.

Daemonikai looked away, willing the pain in his heart to subside. The Oracle resumed her slow departure, and he watched her go, feeling a whirlwind of emotions.

But just as she reached the edge of the courtyard, her voice carried back to him, slightly raised but still calm.

โ€œAnd who said the soul exchange spell didnโ€™t work, Great Grand King?โ€ she said. โ€œIt did. Justโ€ฆ not in the way Vladya expected. He will understand with time.โ€

Daemonikai frowned. What? Just wait a goddamn minute.

โ€œWhat do you mean byโ€”โ€

โ€œAnd beware of the Vampire of Greyrock,โ€ she cut in, clearly a warning this time. โ€œHe is more dangerous than he seems.โ€

As soon as the words left her lips, she winced sharply, her hand flying to her temple as though struck by a sudden, searing pain.

Daemonikai didnโ€™t need to askโ€”he knew exactly what was happening. She had just spoken something she shouldnโ€™t have. And it had hurt her.

His frown deepened. Why would she risk such pain just to give him a warning he already knew? The Oracle had withheld so much throughout their conversation, choosing her words carefullyโ€ฆ why go against her oath, wasting a warning on something so glaringly obvious?

When he reached his study, Vladya was already there, waiting. Restless, anxious, and brimming with impatience, he stood near the wooden desk, fingers tapping absently against the gilded edge of an open book, his eyes fixed solely on the door.

As soon as Daemonikai entered, Vladya straightened. โ€œDid you speak to her about my soul?โ€

Daemonikai met his gaze and nodded, unhurried. Letting the silence stretch a moment before he spoke. โ€œI did.โ€

A beat passed. Vladya inhaled sharply. โ€œAnd?โ€

Daemonikai leaned casually against the door, and smiled knowingly. โ€œSheโ€™s looking into it.โ€

The words struck Vladya like lightning. His face shifted instantlyโ€ฆ from doubt to elation, from disbelief to hope.

When he spoke again, it was almost a whisper. โ€œI could get my soul back?โ€

โ€œRemember, sheโ€™s not promising anything,โ€ Daemonikai warned. โ€œAnd the success rate is low, butโ€”โ€

โ€œBut thereโ€™s actually a possibility?โ€ Vladyaโ€™s tone held barely contained excitement. โ€œAnd she agreed to look into it?โ€

Daemonikai inclined his head, amused at his friendโ€™s reaction. โ€œPretty much.โ€

Vladya let out a long breath. The grin that stretched across his face was wide, unguarded, almost disbelieving. โ€œWhat instructions did she give? Is there a regimen to follow?โ€

Daemonikai shook his head. โ€œOnly that you should go to her haven at dawn for the first ritual. That will determine whether the rest may work.โ€

Vladya absorbed the words, looking reverent. โ€œFor the first time ever, something can be done,โ€ he murmured, more to himself than to Daemonikai. โ€œItโ€™s no longer an unreachable dream. A hopeless vision of a mad male.โ€

Daemonikaiโ€™s eyes softened. Walking over, he clasped a hand on his friendโ€™s shoulder. โ€œCongratulations, my dear friend.โ€
