Chapter 245
Princess Emeriel
Opening her eyes, for the first time in days, Emeriel feltโฆ well. More than well, actually. The persistent headache was gone, the fever and chills vanished, and the swelling faded as if it had never been.
โHow do you feel?โ
Her eyes found Aekeira seated beside her; exhaustion mingled with relief in her gaze.
โAekeiraโฆโ Emerielโs voice was a rasp.
โYou had everyone worried sick,โ Aekeira said. โFor a moment, we feared the worst.โ
โFor a moment, I thought the worst,โ Emeriel said, trying to push herself up. A sharp pain shot through her abdomen, and she winced. Aekeira quickly leaned forward, helping her into a more comfortable position, adjusting the pillows behind her back.
โHow long has it been?โ
โFive days.โ
Emeriel let out a slow breath. โFive daysโฆ That long, huh.โ
โIโm so relieved to see you alright,โ Aekeira said, her smile strained. โYou really scared me.โ
Emeriel noticed her sisterโs hands twitching, knuckles flexing. Aekeira wanted to reach out, to hold her, to be sure she was real, but clearly hesitated. These past few years hadnโt been easy on them. Emeriel, in her own pain, had distanced herself from everyoneโeven the one person whose touch had always brought her the greatest comfort. So, she reached out first, placing a hand on Aekeiraโs arm. โIโm sorry I scared you, Keira.โ
Aekeira was on her in an instant, wrapping her in a tight hug. Home. The feeling hit Emeriel so hard, stealing her breath. Longing surged through her, raw and powerful, so much so that she bit her lip to keep from breaking down, clenching her fists to restrain herself, taking shallow breaths to rein in the avalanche of emotion, willing it to stay buried.
โDonโt ever do that again,โ Aekeira scolded, her body trembling. โHow could you let yourself be hit by an arrow? Youโre usually so quick to deflect them! How could you let this one strike you?โ
โOh, yes, I saw it coming and thought Iโd stand there with my arms wide open, rejoicing as it tore through my belly,โ Emeriel said dryly.
Her sister huffed, pulling back and giving Emeriel a reproachful look. โSo you still have a sense of humor. Thatโs good to know.โ
Emeriel grunted in response.
โHow did I survive that?โ she wondered aloud. โI smelled that poison. It was one of those rare, deadly ones. I think it was shezie. Smelled like it.โ She looked down at their intertwined hands, her brow furrowed. โFor a moment, I was sure I saw the white lights and the train to the otherworld.โ
โNot even remotely amusing.โ Aekeira settled back into her seat, taking Emerielโs hand once more. โYour man saved you.โ
Emeriel had suspected as much. Butโฆ how? No one has a shezie antidote readily at hand, not unless theyโre a mage.
โHe sucked the poison out of you, pulled it into his own body. Lord Vladya said he recited spells that made it possible,โ Aekeira revealed softly.
Emeriel went still. What? Pulling her hand free, she lifted her garment and looked down at the spot where the wound had been. Nearly healed, there was no swelling, no darkened veins, no lingering trace of the poison.
Emeriel glanced at her sister, her mouth opening and closing, but no words came out. But whyโฆ why would he do this?
โEvery single moment, he was here, watching over you, caring for you,โ Aekeiraโs voice was touched with wonder. โEven while he suffered, while the poison ate through his organsโฆโ
Emerielโs hands spasmed, gripping her garments tighter. He took my poisonโฆ?
โHeโs only away now because of a critical meeting regarding the new project to draw water for the crops. He missed countless duties because he refused to leave your side, Em.โ
โBut whyโฆ?โ Emerielโs voice was barely a whisper. โOur bond is gone. Thereโs nothing forcing him to do this.โ
โI donโt think this is about the bond anymore,โ Aekeira said, looking certain and equally amazed. โI think he genuinely cares about you. He took the poison into himself, bore the pain for days. The antidote only arrived yesterday.โ Shaking her head, she added, โYou would have died.โ
Emerielโs mind was spinning. She couldnโt comprehend the depth of his sacrifice. Or why he would do it for her. And he wasnโt fully recovered from his illness.
Emeriel swallowed the tight knot in her throat. โDo they know who was responsible?โ
โHis bloodhost,โ Aekeiraโs eyes turned fierce. โThat damned mistress. I donโt know why she hates you so much.โ
Of course. Why am I not surprised? Emerielโs eyes narrowed. โThat foolish woman.โ
โThe Grand King investigated it himself,โ her sisterโs expression softened. โWhen no one else could find a clue, somehow, he did. He nearly lost his mind that nightโฆ all because of you.โ
Emerielโs heart flutteredโan erratic, vulnerable beat.
โDid you patch things up with him?โ Aekeiraโs voice was gentle, but Emeriel stared blankly ahead, saying nothing.
โEmโฆโ
โIโm terrified to,โ she finally admitted.
Her sister looked at her, pity visible in her eyes.
โI want to hear him, to know what he has to say,โ Emeriel confessed aloud for the first time. โBut Iโm terrified out of my mind, Aekeira.โ Her eyes traced the uneven, faded lines of dirt marring the wall. โWhat if he says the wrong thing? What if itโs pity, or heโs only trying to ease his guilt? What if heโs just being friendly, with no plans of a future for us?โ Another tight swallow. โWhat if heโs doing all this because he feels he owes me something for coming back here to save him? What if heโs being nice and sweet simply to return a favor, nothing more?โ
โToo many โwhat ifs,โ my darling sister,โ Aekeira reprimanded quietly.
Emeriel exhaled, her gaze dropping to the nearly healed wound. โWhat if he does say the right things?โ Her voice was filled with trepidation. โIโm terrified to walk the path of love again, Aekeira. Iโve been there, and itโs heartbreaking. I feel too much for him. If I let those feelings out again, and he decides we have no future, Iโll never recover a second time.โ
โOh, Emโฆโ
โDonโt call me that,โ she grumbled.
โLiving this way isnโt truly living, Em,โ Aekeira said, ignoring her disapproval. โYes, those protective walls shield you from pain, from all the harshness of the world, but they keep you from happiness, from truly living. From taking a chance.โ
Emeriel folded her arms. โAnd is that what youโre doing? Taking a chance again, after everything Lord Vladya put you through?โ
