Chapter 244

Princess Emeriel drifted in and out of consciousness. Each time she surfaced, someone was offering a bitter herb, cooling her forehead, or coaxing her to eat. It was exhausting, intrusive. Why couldn't they leave her to her dreams? Beautiful, sweet dreams of her and her Beloved.

Here, in this world of warmth and light, there was no pain, no misery. Their bond was alive and flourishing. Here, she could feel his presence even when he was far from the fortress. She felt everything in his heartโ€”his pain, his happiness, his love. In this world, her belly was full and rounded, carrying their child, a child who brought even more sunshine into their already radiant world. Her beloved glowed with joy, untouched by sorrow and loss.

Emeriel did not want to wake from this idyllic dream. If crossing over brought dreams like these, perhaps she should have crossed long ago. It was beautiful. It wasโ€”

โ€œWake up, Princess. Open your mouth.โ€ Madam Liviaโ€™s voice drifted into her dreams. Not this again.

โ€œGo awayโ€ฆโ€ she tried to shout, but the words came out a garbled mumble.

โ€œSheโ€™s overdue for her medication,โ€ the head maidโ€™s voice chimed in, โ€œbut lately, she locks her jaw tight, refusing any disturbance.โ€

Blessed silence returned. Emeriel relaxed, grateful. Thank heavensโ€”

A strong, gentle hand caressed her cheek. โ€œWake up, dearling.โ€ She stirred at the familiar voice. What was he doing outside her dreams? Here, in this fuzzy half-world, he sounded closerโ€ฆ more real.

Fine, perhaps sheโ€™d open her eyes for just a moment.

Bright light assaulted her vision. Nope. Emeriel quickly squeezed her eyes shut.

โ€œDraw the curtains closed, Livia,โ€ her Beloved ordered.

โ€œBut she needs cool airโ€”โ€

โ€œDo it,โ€ he insisted.

The sound of rustling curtains followed. The room dimmed. Then, the wonderful silence. Cautiously, she opened her eyes again, one at a time. Her vision was blurry, but as she blinked, her belovedโ€™s face slowly came into focus.

โ€œHello, Princess,โ€ he groaned, his fingers caressing her cheekbones.

Her head felt light and foggy, but thisโ€ฆ this was a pleasant dream too. Emeriel let out a soft, contented sound, nuzzling into his touch.

โ€œThatโ€™s my good girl,โ€ his hand moved to stroke her hair. โ€œNow, you need to drink.โ€

A cup pressed against her lips, and a bitter liquid touched her tongue. She gagged, turning her head away.

โ€œBitter,โ€ she mumbled. โ€œDonโ€™t want it.โ€

โ€œI know, but you must,โ€ He leaned closer, his face filling her vision, blocking out the rest of the world.

Emeriel found she didnโ€™t mind that at all.

โ€œYouโ€™re so handsome,โ€ she slurred. โ€œButโ€ฆ thereโ€™s a little error hereโ€ฆโ€ Lifting a hand, she flattened the lines of worry on his forehead, smoothing the frown between his brows. โ€œThere, much better. Donโ€™t frown so hard.โ€

His gaze was filled with a tenderness that made her feel like the center of his universe. Oh, she liked that. A lot.

โ€œKeep looking at meโ€ฆ like that,โ€ she murmured drowsily, lost in those eyes. โ€œSometimes, itโ€™s like you see right into my very soul.โ€

She paused, her eyelids fluttering. โ€œItโ€™s unnerving, butโ€ฆ I like it. Donโ€™t ever stop.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re drugged out of your senses,โ€ he said in that deep, sexy voice that made Emeriel tingle inside.

โ€œNo, Iโ€™m quite clearheaded,โ€ she informed him with utmost seriousness. Blinking hard, she frowned, her brow wrinkling as her eyes tried to focus. โ€œThough you do seem to haveโ€ฆ three eyes and two noses.โ€

He let out a deep chuckle. โ€œClearheaded, are we?โ€

โ€œAbsolutely,โ€ Emerielโ€™s hand slipped to his neck, greedily tracing wherever her fingers could reach. โ€œI wish youโ€™d do that more often. Laugh. I want to hear itโ€ฆ to see it.โ€

โ€œYou make me want to,โ€ he admitted, his tone raspy. โ€œI never thought I would again, but youโ€ฆโ€

He picked up the dreaded medicine cup once more. โ€œYou do need to drink this.โ€

โ€œDo not.โ€

โ€œDo, too.โ€ It pressed against her mouth again. โ€œDrink, Riel.โ€

Riel. The pet name made her insides twist pleasantly.

โ€œRielโ€ฆโ€ she savored the way it sounded. โ€œI like it.โ€

โ€œYou do?โ€

Emeriel nodded enthusiastically. โ€œVery much. Call meโ€ฆ Riel, Your Grace.โ€

โ€œI will, darling,โ€ he promised softly. โ€œNow, drink.โ€

Reluctantly, she opened her mouth and gulped down the bitter medicine, grimacing.

A smile touched his lips. โ€œGood girl.โ€

Emeriel preened under his praise. โ€œI have the most beautiful dreamsโ€ฆโ€ she confided, groggily.

โ€œOh?โ€ There was curiosity in his tone.

โ€œMmm.โ€ She reached for him, clinging weakly. โ€œLie beside me, and Iโ€™ll tell you all about them.โ€

He sighed. โ€œIโ€™m needed in court, Riel.โ€

โ€œPleaseโ€ฆ Beloved,โ€ she whined, persuasive.

Another sigh, one of surrender. โ€œLeave us, Livia.โ€

She barely heard the soft footsteps, the door opening and closing. He lay beside her, and Emeriel rested her head on his solid chest, sighing in contentment. His arms were her favorite place, the safest place in the entire universe.

โ€œI dreamed of us,โ€ she fought the pull of sleep. โ€œOf our life togetherโ€ฆ You were so happy.โ€

โ€œWas I?โ€ His voice was soft.

โ€œOh yes.โ€ She glanced up at him, her eyes heavy. โ€œI was heavyโ€ฆ with your child.โ€

In that instant, Emeriel was grateful she could see his face. Could see the raw hunger that sparked in his eyes. The longingโ€ฆ Sick or not, it was a sight that would forever be imprinted on her heart. Her powerful mate lookedโ€ฆ as though he might cry.

โ€œItโ€™s not something that will happen for meโ€ฆ for us anytime soon,โ€ he said hoarsely, his eyes finally breaking away from hers. โ€œNot for centuries to come.โ€

She ran a soothing hand over his chest, grounding herself in the steady rise and fall of his breathing, trying to keep her drug-addled mind focused.

โ€œMy late bondmate and I were together for four millennia and only two sons to show for it. Our youngest was eight hundred years agoโ€ฆ we tried for a third for centuries.โ€ His voice faltered, and he drew a shaky breath. โ€œI would give anything to have another childโ€ฆโ€

Oh, my beloved. Emerielโ€™s heart ached for him. An old pain surfaced; she had no idea where it came from, but it was right there in her chest.

โ€œDo you know what it means to try for a child for three hundred years, young one?โ€ His deep voice rumbled through his chest.

Closing her eyes, she soaked in the soothing vibrations.

โ€œIt means each day feels endless. Every heat cycle that passes without conception is agony for both of you.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ she whispered.

โ€œDonโ€™t be.โ€ His hand stroked her arm. โ€œItโ€™s a beautiful dream. I would give anything to have shared it with you, even if only in a dream.โ€

Her eyelids grew heavier, his sweet embrace lulling her into that drifting peace. A memory stirred at the edge of her consciousness. Something painful yet precious, but she didnโ€™t hold onto it. Here pain had no place.

โ€œItโ€™s a lovely dream,โ€ she conceded. โ€œStay with me, my Beloved. Just a little while longer.โ€
