Chapter 241

Ottai was utterly lost, adrift in a sea of confusion. โ€œUhmm, hello guys? Iโ€™m still here,โ€ he waved a hand to get their attention.

They turned in unison, eyes snapping to him. Theyโ€™d forgotten he was even there, hadnโ€™t they?

โ€œYou two could at least clue me in on this โ€˜solutionโ€™ youโ€™re discussing,โ€ Ottai said dryly, curious.

โ€œNo,โ€ Daemonikai said at the exact moment Vladya added, โ€œHe plans to suck the poison out of her and take it into his own body.โ€

โ€œWhat?!โ€ Ottai blanched, aghast.

But now that he thought about it, it made sense. That explained Daemonikaiโ€™s sudden shift in mood. He had found a solution, no matter how unconventional.

Ottai couldnโ€™t believe this. โ€œYour woman and I did NOT go through the fires of hell and that damned cold sea to save you, just to watch you throw your life away like this!โ€

โ€œTell him, Ottai,โ€ Vladya encouraged, casting an approving glance.

โ€œItโ€™s human and mage toxin, not Urekai. I can bear it until the antidote is found,โ€ he said firmly, folding his arms with that familiar haughty stance of a king. โ€œBesides, everyone seems to forget: I have a strong resistance to many poisons.โ€

โ€œPerhaps once you did,โ€ Vladya countered sharply. โ€œA fully recovered Grand King Daemonikai, yes. Not the sick, weakened king, barely recovered from walking the very doors of death. Let me do this.โ€

โ€œSays the Grand Lord Vladya with one foot in madness land,โ€ Daemonikai shot back.

Both Vladya and Ottai gasped. Vladyaโ€™s jaw hung open in shock.

โ€œA low blow, ancient one.โ€ But despite his words, a faint smile tugged at his lips.

Daemonikai was unapologetic. โ€œAnd I can strike lower.โ€

โ€œOh, youโ€”โ€ Vladya moved to grab him, clearly ready to brawl.

Ottai was struck by a moment of nostalgia. The sight of them brought back memories of simpler times, glimpses of their old selves; the carefree camaraderie they had shared before tragedy struck Urai. It was like a brief return to their carefree past.

โ€œUmโ€ฆ gentlemen,โ€ Aekeiraโ€™s soft voice cut through.

They all paused, turning to see her standing before them. She had left her sisterโ€™s side and approached them, her face determined.

โ€œSomeone teach me,โ€ she said in a steady voice. โ€œI would like to suck the poison out myself.โ€

Vladyaโ€™s body went rigid. โ€œAbsolutely not. Sheโ€™s my sisterโ€”โ€

โ€œYou will go NOWHERE near that poison,โ€ Vladya thundered, his voice ringing with the authority of a grand lord.

Chapter 241

Aekeiraโ€™s eyes widened and she took a step back. Ottai couldnโ€™t help his chuckle. She likely hadnโ€™t heard that tone since her return.

โ€œI donโ€™t know, Vladya. She does seem rather determined,โ€ the kingโ€™s eyes gleamed with mischief. โ€œPerhaps she wouldโ€”โ€

โ€œPerhaps she would do nothing. I am removing her from here,โ€ Stepping forward, Vladya took Aekeira by the arm. โ€œDo nothing reckless in my absence, old friend.โ€

He cast a sidelong glance at Ottai. โ€œAnd Ottai, ensure he does not go through with this. The poison will eat away at his organs. Itโ€™s too dangerous. Heโ€™s not fully recovered enough for this.โ€

With that, he led Aekeira out of the room. Though โ€œledโ€ was generous; he all but dragged her out while she protested, digging her heels in.

Silence settled over the room. Then, the grand kingโ€™s green eyes pinned Ottai. โ€œDo you believe you can stop me, Ottai?โ€

Ottai rolled his eyes, a faint sigh escaping him. โ€œAs if anything I say will sway you. Youโ€™ve already made up your mind.โ€

He shook his head. โ€œStill, Iโ€™d like you to reconsider. Emeriel would not have wanted this.โ€

Daemonikaiโ€™s gaze drifted to Emerielโ€™s still form. So peaceful, so achingly beautiful, even as she lay there, slipping away.

โ€œPerhaps,โ€ he conceded. โ€œBut she has to be alive to decide what she wants or doesnโ€™t want. And I intend to make that happen.โ€

The earlier ease drained from him as he growled, โ€œI will not lose her too. Iโ€™d rather die than let that happen.โ€ Ottai hid his surprise well. โ€œI never thought Iโ€™d hear you speak words like thatโ€ฆ for her,โ€ he said genuinely.

Daemonikai managed a faint, wry smile. โ€œNeither did I, Ottai.โ€

He settled on the bed beside her, his hand gently brushing through her hair.

โ€œOne never truly understands what they have until itโ€™s almost lost, huh?โ€ Ottai mumbled.

โ€œNo, thatโ€™s more fitting for Vladya and Aekeira.โ€ He still looked at Emeriel, his eyes filled with a depth of feeling Ottai hadnโ€™t seen in years. โ€œMore likeโ€ฆ one doesnโ€™t accept what they have until theyโ€™ve freed themselves from the burden of guilt, confronting the pain of their loss rather than hiding from it. One must open their heart, no matter how empty it is, to truly feel something again.โ€ His eyes lifted to meet Ottaiโ€™s. โ€œThe truth is, thereโ€™s still a void in my heart,โ€ he revealed, โ€œYet, I have never felt more alive. These past few days, I was just going through the motions of living, methodically. I have felt more whole these recent days than I have in so long.โ€

Ottai was mesmerized. โ€œEven without the bond?โ€

โ€œEven without the bond,โ€ Daemonikai reiterated with a slow nod. โ€œWhat does that tell you, Ottai?โ€

โ€œThat you genuinely care for her.โ€ Ottai was touched, and it made him emotional. โ€œI never thought I would see this day again. Iโ€™mโ€ฆ truly glad for you, Your Grace.โ€

Daemonikai looked down at her, the gentlest expression on his face. โ€œI want to learn what it means to love again. If sheโ€™ll give us another chance, I hope to fill this hollow place within meโ€ฆ with feelings for her.โ€

โ€œHave you told her that?โ€ Ottai asked.

Daemonikai shook his head. โ€œI havenโ€™t had the chance. So far, I havenโ€™t been very lucky with talking to her. Iโ€™m not good with words.โ€

His eyes drifted to the wound, shadowed and swollen. โ€œBut I want to relearn everything. Start from the beginning, just for her. I need her to live, Ottai. I cannot bear to lose her too.โ€

Then, the grand king lowered his head, pressing his lips to the wound, drawing the poison into himself.

Ottai watched as a dark stain spread across his cheek. His face grew taut with pain, the poison seeping into him, his hand gripping the sheets so tightly his knuckles paled.

When he finally lifted his head, his face was white, a sheen of sweat dampening his brow.

โ€œIโ€ฆ I got it all,โ€ he rasped, his voice hoarse, eyes unfocused. โ€œNowโ€ฆ now she only needs to heal from the wound itself.โ€

As he rose, his body swayed. Ottai was instantly at his side. โ€œAre you alright?โ€

Daemonikai held up a hand, stopping him from offering support. โ€œJust a littleโ€ฆ unsteady. The poisonโ€ฆ it needs time to settle within me.โ€

The door opened, and Vladya strode back in. As his gaze landed on Daemonikaiโ€™s face, he hurried closer, lips pressed into a thin line. โ€œHe did it, didnโ€™t he?โ€

โ€œI did,โ€ Daemonikai stated faintly.

Ottai straightened, pulling away reluctantly. โ€œFaiwick and his apprentice will set out at dawn,โ€ he said, resigned. โ€œIโ€™ll go send word to Mysticaria, to expect our men. Justโ€ฆ take care of him, Vladya. Please.โ€

โ€œYou know I will.โ€ Vladya deadpanned.
