Chapter 240

Ottai led them to Frostfall's royal residence. They entered the quiet chamber where Emeriel lay on the bed, her face pale and eyes closed. Her breathing was faint. Grand King Daemonikai sat beside her, his hand clasped around hers. He didn't react to Ottai's announcement of their arrival or their entrance.

โ€œEm?โ€ Aekeira ran to her sister's side, taking her other hand. โ€œEm, please, open your eyes,โ€ she sobbed. โ€œPleaseโ€ฆ itโ€™s me, Aekeira.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re waiting on Faiwick. Heโ€™s searching for the antidote,โ€ Ottaiโ€™s voice was low. โ€œThe poison used is quite rare and difficult to obtain. So far, every healer weโ€™ve checked doesnโ€™t have the kaizan root needed for the antidote.โ€

โ€œKaizan roots?โ€ Vladyaโ€™s brows drew together. โ€œThose are almost impossible to come by.โ€

Ottai nodded grimly. โ€œItโ€™s not a Urekai poison; itโ€™s mage poison.โ€ His voice was tense, uneasy. โ€œIf someone sold it here, they likely sold the antidote too. Faiwick is checking with the remaining herbalists and the black market.โ€

Vladyaโ€™s brows creased further. โ€œAnd if itโ€™s not found?โ€

Ottai hesitated, his eyes dropping to the floor. โ€œWe wait for Faiwick.โ€

Throughout, Daemonikai said nothing. His face was stone, his eyes never leaving Emeriel. Vladya moved closer, standing behind the grand king. โ€œAnd the person responsibleโ€”have they been found?โ€ he spoke quietly but with steel in his voice.

โ€œNo trace, no trail, nothing,โ€ Ottai couldnโ€™t hide his frustration. โ€œAll our men are out there searchingโ€”โ€

The door opened, and a guardโ€™s head poked in. โ€œThe healer has returned.โ€

The grand king was on his feet instantly. Faiwick entered, flanked by soldiers.

โ€œHow did it go?โ€ Daemonikai demanded. โ€œWhereโ€™s the antidote?โ€

The healerโ€™s face crumpled. โ€œWe found nothing, Your Grace. We scoured every abode, every herb stand by the rivers.โ€ He shook his head in visible despair. โ€œWe questioned every herbalist, every vendor. There is no kaizan root here.โ€

Aekeira burst into tears, her shoulders shaking as she clutched Emerielโ€™s other hand.

โ€œWhat do you mean you couldnโ€™t find anything?โ€ Daemonikai snarled, his back going ramrod straight.

Faiwickโ€™s shoulders slumped, his face ashen. โ€œI am s-sorry, Your Grace. W-we searched everywhere.โ€

A tense silence filled the room. The grand king looked absolutely murderous.

โ€œWe can still send a team to the mages,โ€ Ottai was quick to add, desperate to curb whatever storm clouds were building. โ€œThey might have the roots.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s a weekโ€™s journey at best,โ€ Vladya countered, staring at Emerielโ€™s pale, still body.

Daemonikaiโ€™s hands balled into tight fists. โ€œHow long does she have?โ€

Ottai shifted, uncomfortable.

โ€œTwo days, Your Grace,โ€ Faiwick answered. โ€œThree at most.โ€

They all looked at him.

โ€œThe p-poison destroys from the inside, little by little,โ€ the healer explained nervously. โ€œEvery passing momentโ€ฆ it eats away at her organs. By the third dayโ€ฆ there will be nothing left.โ€

Grand King Daemonikai threw his head back and roared. A thunderous bellow that echoed through the walls, the building, the entire fortressโ€ฆ shaking the very stone beneath their feet. And, as if that werenโ€™t enough, he pumped out heavy bursts of pheromones.

Spreading like wildfire, the compulsion's strength dropped every common male to their knees. Heads bowed, hands behind their backs. The pressure was so strong, Ottai went rigid, just like Vladya. Unable to fight the strength of his pheromones, they bared their throats, submitting to his dominance.

โ€œCalm down, D-Daemon, pleaseโ€ฆโ€ Vladya said in a raspy voice.

Another roar ripped from the grand kingโ€™s throat, even louder and more intense than the first. The stench of urine rose in the air. Soldiers fell to the floor, rolling on their bellies.

โ€œI will destroy whoever is responsible for this,โ€ Daemonikaiโ€™s eyes blazed, green and yellow. โ€œI will find them, and I will make them pay.โ€

Vladya, with visible effort, forced his legs to move. He was struggling, and Ottai could only imagine the turmoil those pheromones were wreaking on his half-mad beast.

โ€œYour Grace,โ€ Vladyaโ€™s voice was strained, โ€œplease control it. Donโ€™t lose control in here. Please think of Emeriel.โ€

Ottai, breathing through the pulsing pain in his skull, forced himself closer as well. โ€œIโ€™ll prepare the men for the journey to Mysticaria, Your Grace. We will ride all night and day, without stopping, without resting, until we reach the mages. We will return with the antidote.โ€

โ€œBy then, her grave will be cold.โ€ Daemonikai glared at him, sneering.

Everywhere went as quiet as a tomb.

โ€œGet out, all of you!โ€ he barked, his body practically vibrating with rage.

Rising to their feet, the healer and soldiers scrambled out, leaving only the grand rulers and a sobbing Aekeira in the room.

Daemonikai gripped his head, his face hardened, stomping from one end to another like a caged bull. It had been so long since Ottai saw him lose his ever-present control like this. The sight was jarring and borderline terrifying. What if he went feral again?

Daemonikai stopped and glared at the bed. Some of the wildness left his eyes.

Walking to her, he bent over, unwrapping the dressing around Emerielโ€™s wound.

โ€œItโ€™s turning green,โ€ he said gravely, examining the infected flesh. โ€œItโ€™s spreading fast. She doesnโ€™t have a week.โ€

โ€œDaemonโ€”โ€ Ottai began.

โ€œThis poison needs to be removed.โ€ His tone demanded no argument.

โ€œToo dangerous,โ€ Vladya cut in. โ€œPlease, think this through.โ€

Daemonikai looked at him, his eyes narrowed. โ€œI havenโ€™t said anything yet.โ€

โ€œI know what youโ€™re thinking,โ€ Vladya insisted. โ€œDonโ€™t do it.โ€

The yellow in his eyes receded completely, and even his stance relaxed. All the tension drained from him in a second. What was going on?

Daemonikai straightened, and for the first time that evening, he faced his oldest friend. Vladyaโ€™s lips curved into a faint smile. โ€œHey, old man. How have you been?โ€

The hard lines on the grand kingโ€™s face eased. Stepping away from the bed, he walked to Vladya, his eyes sweeping over him, taking in every detail. He paused at his friendโ€™s paw-like hand.

Vladya self-consciously flexed his clawed hand. โ€œYeah, itโ€™sโ€”โ€ His eyes fell on Daemonikaiโ€™s own arm, where the trails of blackened blood were still visible.

โ€œDaemonโ€ฆโ€ Vladyaโ€™s tone held a hint of concern.

Daemonikai pulled him into a bone-crushing hug. Vladya returned it, squeezing back with equal force.

โ€œYouโ€™ve come so far,โ€ the grand king stated. โ€œThank you for fighting so hard.โ€

Vladya let out a rough chuckle. โ€œI could say the same for you,โ€ he muttered. โ€œWho else but you would journey to the spirit world and come back?โ€

โ€œA few have,โ€ Daemonikai grunted.

โ€œYou live a dangerous life, old man,โ€ Vladya cleared his throat, pulling back slightly. โ€œIt gladdens me more than you know to see you here.โ€

Daemonikai smirked, arching a brow. โ€œWhoโ€™s the sap now?โ€

โ€œI know why youโ€™re suddenly being all chatty,โ€ Vladyaโ€™s tone sobered. โ€œYouโ€™re planning to use that solution on Emeriel, arenโ€™t you?โ€

A beat of silence passed, charged and heavy.

Vladya scowled. โ€œDonโ€™t do it.โ€

The grand king cocked his head to the side. โ€œYou have a better idea?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t,โ€ Vladyaโ€™s mouth tightened. โ€œBut I donโ€™t want to watch you suffer through that.โ€

His brows shot up. โ€œYouโ€™re kidding, right?โ€

โ€œThen let me do it.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s my woman,โ€ Daemonikai growled possessively. โ€œMine. I do it.โ€

โ€œDaemon, would youโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t โ€˜Daemonโ€™ me. I will do this.โ€ He stated, โ€œAnd after this, I will confront Zaiper. And after that, I will go back to the scene of the crime to investigate myself. No one, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE, rests tonight until Iโ€™ve found the culprit behind this.โ€

Does he mean his usual confrontation? Cause that was bad. Ottai winced. Now, I pity Zaiper.
