Chapter 164

A series of emotions flitted across Daemonikaiโ€™s faceโ€”shock, pity, disbelief. He grappled for words, his mouth agape, then snapped shut without a sound.

โ€œBut you know how unreliable, dangerous, and dark those spells are!โ€ his friend exploded. โ€œWe outlawed them for a reason, you and I. We made that decision, remember? What the hell were you thinking, Vladya Theriozydovkar Skyvakto?โ€

โ€œNot the full name,โ€ Vladya grumbled, almost amused. He might have smiled if he wasnโ€™t certain Daemonikai would throttle him for it. His friend was beyond furious.

โ€œHow could you!?โ€ Daemonikai roared, the veins in his neck pulsing. โ€œHow could you do something like that, dammit! You should have turned a blind eye! You should have resisted! No matter how tempting it was, you should have held it in!โ€

โ€œI wanted to save her!โ€ A primal roar filled the room. โ€œI was prepared to save her by any means necessary, soul be damned! I never even gave it a second thought. So what if I lost the most important part of my being? So what if I am severed from my beast? So what if I start to lose my sanity? Tiara would be here, my bondmate would be with me, and I would still be bonded. The loneliness, the darkness, would disappear. So what if I lost my soul if I could get my greatest desire!?โ€

โ€œI was willing to do it, I was ready to do it, I did it!โ€ Vladya shouted, the pent-up bitterness and anger of centuries spilling out uncontrollably. โ€œThe gods fucked me over. Itโ€™s not enough theyโ€™ve been messing me up my whole life, they chose the moments I needed them most and fucked me over. I should have known. Their favor has never been mine. Nothing, not a single desire, has come to fruition. I should have known they would forsake me. Curse the seven gods! To the abyss with the fates! And may Ukrae be damned for all eternity! I am done.โ€

โ€œVladyaโ€ฆโ€ His best friend looked utterly devastated.

Chest heaving, Vladya took a moment to regain his shattered control.

โ€œI am done,โ€ Vladya repeated, his voice calmer. โ€œI will give them what they want. I am done fighting.โ€

For a moment, silence filled the room. The weight of his words hung heavy in the air.

โ€œOnly you can tell me to put up a fight, and I will.โ€ He glanced at Daemonikai, unshed tears brimming in his eyes. โ€œOnly you can tell me to resist the pull of the madness, and I will. But please, Daemon, if you have any love for me at allโ€ฆ if youโ€™ve ever cared for me, pleaseโ€ฆ I beg of you, just let me go.โ€

โ€œOver. My. Dead. Body.โ€ Daemonikaiโ€™s voice was steel. He gripped Vladyaโ€™s shoulder. โ€œLook at me, Vladya. You will have to go through me before you reach that feral madness. I will not let you.โ€

โ€œDaemonikai, please.โ€

โ€œI. Will. Not. Let. You,โ€ Daemonikai reiterated, his eyes boring into Vladya. โ€œYou forget sometimes, youโ€™re not the only selfish one around. I need you here with me. Alive.โ€

Vladyaโ€™s gaze fell to the floor.

Daemonikai cupped his jaw, forcing him to meet his eyes. โ€œWhat did you tell me the night I returned?โ€

โ€œDaemonโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYou said not to escape. Not to hide. You told me living was the only choice we had, that we should live even if it felt like hell. So if you think Iโ€™m going to let you die, then think again.โ€

A muscle ticked in Vladyaโ€™s jaw. โ€œI know that,โ€ he admitted, his voice tight. โ€œItโ€™s why Iโ€™ve kept it a secret.โ€

โ€œToo bad. You are not running away from this. Promise me.โ€

โ€œDaemonโ€ฆโ€

โ€œPromise me you will fight it.โ€ Daemonikai hated this feeling in his chestโ€”so raw from pain, so exposed.

But more than that, he hated the thought of losing Vladya to madness. He would get a promise from this hardheaded mule if it was the last thing he did. Because, just like him, Vladyaโ€™s word was his bond. A vow was all he needed.

After all theyโ€™d been through, centuries and millennia, through every challenge and disaster, the very thought of losing Vladya was unacceptable. Not while Daemonikai still drew breath.

If this was how Vladya had felt when heโ€™d gone mad, it was no wonder Vladya couldnโ€™t let go. No wonder Vladya had gone to such extremes to bring him back.

โ€œI donโ€™t care if you have no soul, you will fight it. I cannot lose you. Promise me. Now,โ€ Daemonikai said fiercely. โ€œBecause let me tell you, if I have to lose you too, I will go on a killing spree. I will slay every last human in this world, including the ones born today. I will erase the human species and turn their lands to dust. I truly will set this world on fire, V.D.โ€

A flicker of amusement sparked in Vladyaโ€™s eyes, breaking through the tension.

โ€œOh, stop. That sounds like the most twisted love confession,โ€ Vladya said in a lighter tone. โ€œYou sound like a lovesick idiot.โ€

Daemonikai didnโ€™t share his amusement. His face remained grim, deadly serious.

Vladya must have seen something in his eyes, for the lightness in his vanished. โ€œYouโ€™re serious, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œGee, I wonder what gave me away?โ€ Daemonikai crossed his arms.

Vladyaโ€™s mouth opened and closed, words failing him.

โ€œUkraeโ€™s balls. Not that the idea of erasing the entire human population isnโ€™t tempting as hell, but you canโ€™t do that,โ€ Vladya said at last. โ€œYouโ€™ll become that person again. Evie went through hell to purge the world of Daemonikai the Cruel. The Berserker. Vicious Destroyer. Harbinger of Ruin. What the hell is wrong with you?โ€

Daemonikai stared him down. โ€œYou will fight it. You will not give in easily. Promise me.โ€

โ€œDaemonโ€ฆโ€ The fight drained out of Vladya, his shoulders drooping like willows. โ€œFine, you stubborn ancient wagon. Agreed.โ€

โ€œI need your word.โ€

โ€œYou have my word.โ€ Vladya massaged his brow, adding in a low tone, โ€œI promise.โ€

โ€œSeal it with an oath.โ€

Vladyaโ€™s frustration flared. โ€œYouโ€ฆ Bloody hell.โ€ A deep breath. โ€œFine, I vow that I will fight the feral madness. I will fight with my last breath. Happy?โ€

Only then did the rigidness in Daemonikaiโ€™s posture ease. That would be enough for now.

โ€œNo wonder people have misunderstood our friendship over the centuries.โ€ Vladya snorted, gesturing between them. โ€œJust so you know, this is unhealthy. You are as toxic as the devilโ€™s tits.โ€

โ€œShut up,โ€ Daemonikai glowered at him. โ€œDonโ€™t think I didnโ€™t hear how you chose this.โ€ He mirrored Vladyaโ€™s gesture. โ€œHow you chose me, over our people for five centuries. You were all that stood between my feral self, our laws, and Zaiper.โ€

Vladyaโ€™s cheeks flushed, looking uncomfortable. โ€œForget that.โ€ He cleared his throat. โ€œIt seems history is about to repeat itself, only now, Iโ€™m on the feral side.โ€

โ€œNo, you are not, you brat.โ€ Throat tight, Daemonikai pulled Vladya into another bone-crushing hug. โ€œI will stand between you and that dark void, you hear me?โ€ He vowed. โ€œNow you tell me everything. How the symptoms are, what youโ€™re feeling right now, what you want. Leave no detail untold. Letโ€™s fight this together. And if you go down, we go down, you hear me?โ€

He felt more than saw Vladya nod against his shoulder.
