Chapter 163

Daemonikaiโ€™s insides turned cold, as if a dash of ice water had been forced down his throat. Dread filled his gut. โ€œItโ€™s me, V.D.โ€

โ€œHow dare you invade my space? I should rip your throat out.โ€ Vladya was looking at him but not seeing him. His eyes were wild, filled with murderous intent.

โ€œScent my neck.โ€ The words tasted like acid, but it was necessary. Alphas do not bare their necks. He, a grand king, should not be in such a humiliating position, with another alpha so close. โ€œYou know you want to, big guy. Come on, do it.โ€

Vladya lunged, burying his face in the crook of Daemonikaiโ€™s neck, breathing deeply. His beast whined in betrayal, feeling let down by its male side; its head hung low. But this was Vladya. His V.D.

The grand king closed his eyes and held still, Vladyaโ€™s breath hot against his skin. โ€œHey, itโ€™s okay. Iโ€™m here,โ€ he said, his voice calm, his stance non-threatening.

Vladya released another burst of pheromones, meant to provoke, to assault.

โ€œI mean no harm,โ€ Daemonikai grunted, raising his hands in surrender, his muscles tense with the effort to remain passive.

Vladya took another deep breathโ€ฆ and stiffened. He shoved away, taking three steps back, eyes widening. โ€œDaemon?โ€

โ€œVlad, are you there?โ€ Daemonikaiโ€™s voice was gentle, coaxing.

The yellow in Vladyaโ€™s eyes receded, the wild look vanished. โ€œWhen did you get here? Whatโ€™s going on? Why did you bare your throat?โ€

Daemonikai closed the distance and punched him hard on the nose.

Vladya hissed, clutching his face, and shot Daemonikai a shocked glare. โ€œWhat the hell?โ€

Daemonikai landed another punch. On the third attempt, Vladya moved with lightning speed, dodging the blow. โ€œWait, letโ€™s talk about this.โ€

The grand king advanced again, his fury mounting. This time, a flicker of wariness crossed Vladyaโ€™s face, only fueling Daemonikaiโ€™s rage. A guilt-free Vladya would be throwing punches by now. Instead of trying to restrain his beast, his friend would be all over him, engaging in a fight that would leave the chamber in ruins.

โ€œYou bastard. You selfish littleโ€”โ€ Daemonikai grabbed his shoulders and squeezed hard, the fabric of Vladyaโ€™s tunic crumpling under his iron grip. โ€œYou selfish bastard.โ€

Vladya slumped against him, as if drained of energy, his breath puffing white against the chill. โ€œYou know.โ€

โ€œI know!? I know?โ€ Daemonikai punched him again, watching with grim satisfaction as Vladyaโ€™s nose broke and his cheek turned purple. But still, Vladya did not fight back, his eyes hollow. โ€œYou dare ask if I know!?โ€ Daemonikai roared.

โ€œFine,โ€ Vladya sighed. โ€œMore. Hit me some more.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t. You. Dare.โ€ Daemonikaiโ€™s hand clamped around Vladyaโ€™s throat, his knuckles white. โ€œYou utter fool.โ€

Daemonikai had dreaded a failed bonding. But this was worse. Unimaginably worse.

โ€œDaemonโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYou were going to leave me? Just like that!?โ€ Daemonikai thundered, the betrayal burning hotter than a blacksmithโ€™s forge. โ€œYou dragged me back here, to this godforsaken place, to watch you go mad?โ€

Vladya stepped back, resignation etched on his face. That lookโ€”one of weary acceptanceโ€”only fueled Daemonikaiโ€™s fury. It took every ounce of self-control not to strike Vladya again. โ€œSelfish piece of work. You were never going to tell me, were you?โ€

Dead silence hung heavy in the air.

โ€œSay something, you bastard, or I swear to Ukrae, I will tear you apart with my bare hands and hang your remains at the entrance gateโ€”โ€

โ€œI am sorry.โ€ Vladyaโ€™s whisper was barely audible, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. โ€œI am just so tired, Daemon.โ€

Daemonikai tried to see past his anger. But it was difficult. Vladya was going feral, and he wasnโ€™t fighting it. The surrender in his slumped shoulders was plain as day. Daemonikai was too appalled to speak. Vladya would allow himself to go feral.

โ€œYouโ€™re right,โ€ Vladyaโ€™s voice cracked. โ€œI was selfish. I needed you here, even knowingโ€ฆ even knowing I was losing myself. Because though Iโ€™m leaving you behind, I canโ€™t stand the thought of you being killed. I needed you alive, Daemon.โ€

โ€œYou were truly going to leave me in the dark? You were truly going to leave me here all alone?โ€ It had been a long time since Daemonikai felt this level of betrayal.

โ€œAnd if I had to do it all over again, Iโ€™d make the same choice.โ€ Vladya shrugged, letting out a bitter laugh. โ€œYou know meโ€”Iโ€™ve always been selfish, especially when it comes to you.โ€

โ€œYou will fight this. You hear me?โ€ Daemonikai stepped closer, invading Vladyaโ€™s personal space. โ€œYou will fight with every drop of blood in you. You will fight with every ounce of strength you have left, and when thatโ€™s gone, you will find more. You know why?โ€ He leaned in, their foreheads nearly touching. โ€œBecause you have no right to give in, Vladya. Absolutely no right to go feral. Not while I still draw breath.โ€

His rage began to fade, leaving a gaping wound of pain. Daemonikai felt raw. โ€œEveryoneโ€™s gone. Youโ€™re the only one leftโ€ฆ and you were going to leave too? How could you?โ€

GRAND LORD VLADYA

The betrayal in his voice made Vladya waver, hurt him. But it was the pain in those eyes that was his undoing.

Closing the gap, Vladya embraced Daemonikai, arms wrapping around his broad frame despite the slight flinch at the unexpected contact. He held on tight, feeling Daemonikaiโ€™s body tremble.

โ€œIโ€™m so sorry,โ€ Vladya croaked. โ€œThose are the only words I have. I am so, so sorry.โ€

โ€œYou stupid, selfish piece of shit.โ€ Daemonikai struggled to break free, but Vladyaโ€™s grip only tightened. โ€œLet go of me, now. Iโ€™ll knock some sense into you if I have to.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m just so exhausted,โ€ Vladya whispered, his voice quivering as he laid his dead heart bare. โ€œLook at me, Daemon. Iโ€™ve walked this earth for four millennia, yet Iโ€™ve never truly known what a bond feels like. The joy of having my own mate, of watching her swell with our child, of sharing the agony and ecstasy of childbirth. I am ancient, yet without lineage. Iโ€™ve never heard the innocent cry of my own blood, never been called โ€˜papa,โ€™ never watched my offspring grow. That joyโ€ฆ I can never have that.โ€

Daemonikaiโ€™s body remained stiff.

โ€œSome nights, I lay awake, and I can barely breathe from the pain,โ€ Vladyaโ€™s voice broke. โ€œI envy Zaiper at times. He never craved any of this, and thus, he lives his best life. Heโ€™s older, yet his mind is as clear as day, his life fulfilling.โ€

โ€œZaiper is a vile, twisted little asshatโ€”โ€

โ€œThe longing within meโ€ฆ it has existed for over three thousand years,โ€ Vladya said, tears cascading down his cheeks onto Daemonikaiโ€™s shoulder. โ€œI live an empty life, Daemon. My beast and I are separated. Itโ€™s like losing a limb. Itโ€™s gone rogue, filling my mind with darkness, lashing out when ignored. Iโ€™ve lost myself, Daemonikai. I lost who I was long ago. Now, I just want to rest.โ€

โ€œWhat about me?โ€ Daemonikaiโ€™s voice was ragged. โ€œYou have me. Iโ€™m here. Broken and all, Iโ€™m still here. Why would you rest when Iโ€™m still fighting? And who told you mating is impossible? So what if millennia have passed? It can still happen.โ€

โ€œIt cannot.โ€

โ€œWhat the hell does that even mean?โ€ Daemonikai demanded, frustrated.

โ€œMy soulโ€ฆ itโ€™s gone.โ€

The silence that followed was a living entity, thick and oppressive. Daemonikai went so rigid Vladya feared he might snap. โ€œIf this is a joke, itโ€™s not a very funny one.โ€

Vladya took a deep, steadying breath. When Daemonikai made another move to pull away, he finally released him. His friend stepped back, green eyes ablaze with dread and a flicker of panic.

โ€œAttempt another joke, V.D.,โ€ Daemonikai said, in a desperate plea. โ€œThis one really lost its humor.โ€

โ€œWhen Tiara was dying, I tried to make an exchange.โ€ He paused. โ€œHavโ€™zie de Baah.โ€
