Chapter 229: Waiting For You
Manny arrived at the Quisall residence again. “Mr. Caleb, the DNA results are in. You are indeed Mr. Kiques’ long-lost son.” His excessively respectful manner lent credibility to his words. Jesse was utterly astounded. “That’s impossible! The sample I submitted was—” He caught himself just in time. That was close. He’d nearly blurted out the truth.
Beside him, Yelena’s eyes nearly bulged out of their sockets. “No way! Jesse used my hair for that test!” Jesse shot her a frantic look and said softly, “Yelena!” After the Raquel incident, he’d given up on romance. His only hope now was joining the Xiques family, and Yelena was about to ruin even that. A wave of weakness washed over him; his limbs turned to jelly, and he nearly crumbled to the ground. Yelena clapped a hand over her mouth, realizing her mistake.
Manny remained unflappable. “So it was Ms. Quixall’s hair? Then it seems Mr. Xiques’ lost child isn’t a son, but a daughter. Ms. Quixall, please come with me. Mr. Xiques has been waiting.”
The revelation came too suddenly for Yelena to process. She stood frozen, as if her soul had left her body. Jesse reeled from the abrupt turn of events. I’m supposed to be the one joining the Xiques family. How had this become Yelena’s opportunity? She’s stupid. She doesn’t deserve this!
Overhearing the conversation, Agnes rushed upstairs to inform George and Deborah Quixall. The couple initially dismissed the claim as absurd. There had to be some mistake! Yelena was definitely their biological daughter! George had waited outside the delivery room when Yelena was born, seeing her immediately afterward.
Even if their son was mistakenly taken, could their daughter have been mistakenly taken as well? The line between truth and lies blurred before their eyes.
George exploded. “My sins? Maybe you should explain yourself! What exactly was your relationship with Harris Xiques? Why is my daughter related to him?”
Deborah’s voice shook with rage. “How dare you accuse me! From the day we married, I barely spoke to another man! You mocked me if I so much as looked at someone else! I lost all freedom the moment I entered this house! Even going out required escorts—I might as well have been a caged bird! Tell me, with such restrictions, when could I have possibly strayed?”
George sneered. “How would I know? Shouldn’t you ask yourself? I kept you under tight control, but you still cheated under my nose! It was impossible to guard against you.”
Deborah felt wronged when her husband unjustly accused her. “You… I can’t talk to you anymore. I’m going back to my parents’ house!”
After a few steps, she froze. Her parents had passed away a year ago, so she had no family home to return to. Without George, she wouldn’t even have a roof over her head. Luckily, she had secretly saved some money, enough to get by for a while. Once her husband cooled down, she’d find a way back.
Thud, thud, thud. Jesse, already bewildered, grew even more confused seeing his mother storm downstairs. “Mom, where are you going?”
