Chapter 202: A Lifetime of Ridicule
Raquel’s heart skipped a beat, her voice stern as she retorted, “Stop spouting nonsense! When have I ever threatened you using your brother? Show me the proof.”
Seiren’s gaze grew dim. “Not long after Mr. Caleb returned, you got into an argument with him. In your fury, you seized my throat, using me to vent your anger. After the incident, Agnes advised me to feign illness so that Mrs. Quixall would stand up for me. Just as I was about to reveal the truth to Mrs. Quixall, you suddenly showed up.” Her eyes were filled with tears, and her body trembled involuntarily. “You went ahead of me, telling Mrs. Quixall that the person who hurt me was Mr. Caleb, and even told me not to reveal the truth. Otherwise, my younger brother can forget about his future studies. We grew up in a poor household. My mother worked herself to exhaustion just to put my younger brother through school. How could I bear to let her efforts go to waste? Ms. Levinson, you’re an evil person! For us ordinary folks, the university entrance exam was our only shot at a better life! Yet, you casually want to strip my younger brother of his right to take that exam. Don’t you think you’re being overly cruel?”
Everyone present understood the importance of the university entrance exam. Thus, when they suddenly heard that the younger brother of an ordinary woman was at risk of being denied his exam eligibility by a high-society lady, they all felt a sense of indignation.
“Ms. Levinson, you are in the wrong on this matter!”
“If word gets out that the daughter of a prestigious family is engaging in underhanded tactics, can you imagine how many people will mock us elites for abusing our power and status?”
“Your father has always had a good reputation. How is it that after your birth, the reputation of the Levinson family has been declining day by day?”
“Mr. and Mrs. Levinson haven’t returned yet. Imagine how heartbroken they would be if they saw the disgraceful things you’ve done with Mr. Doyle upon their return?”
“To think the letter was actually real. Thank goodness Mr. Jenkins read it out on the wedding day. Otherwise, Mr. Jesse would have been the laughingstock for the rest of his life!”
Raquel was the target of a thousand accusations, and the subject of public scorn. Suddenly, she felt as if she was in a dream, with everything around her seeming so distant. Why are they scolding me? I didn’t do anything wrong! I’m only living life as I please! These scions all clearly did even worse things behind closed doors, so how dare they criticize me?
In an instant, she erupted in fury and bellowed, “Enough! Everyone, shut up!”
The crowd fell silent for less than a second before they started to point and whisper about her.
“Many people here are your elders. Is this how you speak to them?”
“Ivan had been humble all his life, yet he raised such an arrogant and domineering young lady! If I were your father, I would have kicked you out of the family a long time ago!”
With a scowl, Raquel said, “Stop acting so high and mighty here! If you were my dad, I’d have my mom kick you out and find me a new one!”
The individual pointed at Dogual. “How dare you behave like this! Today I’ll teach you a lesson on behalf of your father!”
After speaking, he rolled up his sleeves, ready to charge toward Raquel. Others quickly intervened, preventing the situation from escalating further.
As Raquel shouted, she was simultaneously retreating. However, she was soon surrounded by people again, accusing her of improper conduct, blaming her for embarrassing the groom at his own wedding.
Surrounded by people on all sides, Raquel finally gave in to her fear and started crying. “Jesse, save me…”
