Chapter 147: Stop Flattering Yourself
Meanwhile, Caleb was no fool. He could clearly sense Jesse’s hostility.
However, the moment he woke up, he was immediately confronted with such an unfortunate incident, leaving him feeling quite unsettled. “These two are free to discuss their marriage, but why on earth do they have to do it in my hospital room? Could it really be that, in this entire world, only my ward is the best place to do something like that?”
Seeing Caleb’s grim expression, Gianna spoke up. “It’s indeed inappropriate to discuss this when someone has just recovered from a serious illness.”
A sharp glint flashed in the depths of Jesse’s eyes. “I’m about to marry Raquel. As her former best friend, Ms. Sherman, I assume you’re about the same age. Have you given any thought to when you’ll get married?”
He had known for a while now who was responsible for crippling his fiancée’s hands. Every time he thought about this matter, it filled him with a rage so intense that he would grit his teeth in frustration. Both of Raquel’s hands had been utterly crippled, yet Gianna’s other hand remained perfectly fine, which filled Jesse with indignation.
Ironically, the Sherman family wielded a certain level of influence among the various families. If the Quixall family wanted to make a move against them, it wouldn’t be easy at all. Therefore, Jesse had no choice but to wait for the right moment. However, when it came, he would make sure the despicable Gianna would pay a heavy price for the torment she had caused Raquel.
Upon hearing the sarcasm in Jesse’s words, Gianna reacted with an icy expression. “Mr. Jesse, stop being nosy. What business is it of yours when I decide to marry?”
Jesse chuckled lightly. “Don’t be upset, Ms. Sherman. The relationship between our families is fairly good; isn’t it natural for me to show concern for our allies?”
Gianna shot him a glare. “Who said we’re allies? Stop flattering yourself.”
His smile fading slightly, Jesse asked, “Ms. Sherman, is this your personal sentiment, or the stance of your father? Are you implying that the Sherman family intends to sever ties with the Quixall family?”
Gianna replied flatly, “Shouldn’t you already know, Mr. Jesse? Your family caused a commotion that made my father furious. After the incident, our family didn’t hold you accountable. We simply brushed it off and moved on. But this doesn’t mean our families are still allies like before. After all, who would establish friendly ties with a family that shelters a thief?”
After a moment, he regained his senses and scoffed, “Aren’t you the one really shielding a thief, Ms. Sherman? After the incident, my father intended to bring the thief home for punishment. However, you were adamantly against it. Despite your father’s advice, you were determined to elope with the thief, isn’t that right?”
Gianna was somewhat taken aback. Jesse wasn’t present that day, so how did he come to know everything in such detail? Caleb and he are at odds, so he…
She pursed her lips. “I never said that the thief was Caleb.”
“So, what are you implying?”
Upon hearing Jesse’s question, Gianna broke into a smile as she looked straight past him at Raquel. “The only people who visited my house that day were Caleb and the one standing behind you. Could it be that her innocent facade was so compelling that all of you failed to see her true nature?”
Without a second thought, Jesse instinctively shielded Raquel behind him. “Don’t spout nonsense. Raquel is not like that!”
