Chapter 146: A Clear Conscience
Seeing the onlookers wavering, Gianna’s frustration grew. “As to who exactly donated blood to Caleb, let’s just ask the doctor who was there at the time,” she said.
Raquel panicked, yet maintained an air of haughtiness. “The Sherman family is wealthy and influential; who knows if you’ve bribed the doctors? None of that changes the truth. My conscience is clear!”
What a great example of a “clear conscience”!
Gianna knew explaining the situation that day would be futile. She reluctantly approached Caleb’s side and pleaded, “Caleb, trust me. The person who saved you isn’t Raquel, but someone else.”
Caleb silently watched her, not uttering a word for a long while. Gianna wasn’t sure whether he believed her or not, leaving her feeling somewhat flustered.
What if Caleb didn’t believe me? Would he actually believe that wicked woman? After all… she is his former fiancée. The thought alone drained her of confidence, to the point where she couldn’t even muster the courage to meet Caleb’s gaze.
An indeterminate time passed, but for Gianna, it felt like an eternity. Suddenly, a faint smile blossomed at the corner of Caleb’s mouth. It was the first smile he’d shown since waking up.
“I trust you.”
In an instant, Gianna’s heart was moved. The stress of recent days, along with the shock of learning that Caleb had awakened, overwhelmed her. Ecstasy and heartache filled her being, almost causing her to break down in tears. She fought back the urge to cry, her voice choked with emotion as she said, “Caleb, thank you for believing in me… and thank you… for waking up…”
The onlookers, not understanding what was going on, felt the drama was over, and dispersed. Only Raquel, her nails digging deep into her flesh, contorted her face in jealousy.
Why does Caleb trust that despicable Gianna and not me? Even though I am the one closest to him, he didn’t even bother to ask for my side of the story. Instead, he simply believed what others said. Why would he do that?
Upon witnessing Raquel’s reaction, Jesse wore a grim expression. It’s Caleb again. Originally, we were supposed to get married on my birthday. However, my prolonged illness led to the postponement of our wedding. It seems I must hasten the process now.
“Because of unforeseen circumstances, our wedding has been postponed. If you don’t mind, let’s get married in half a month.”
Raquel was shocked by the suggestion. “Jesse, why are you suddenly bringing this up?” Somehow, she felt apprehensive about discussing the topic in front of Caleb. Is it because I’m afraid he’d find out the truth about the blood transfusion, or is it because I’m worried that he would find out about me bullying Gianna? Raquel was utterly perplexed as to why Jesse had raised it.
Jesse broke into a smile, one that was particularly forced. “I was thinking, since Caleb has just woken up, we should celebrate by having our wedding sooner. It will help bring him luck, helping him recover faster.”
Raquel let out a sigh of relief. “I see. In that case, Jesse, feel free to make the arrangements. I’ve no preferences.”
However, faced with her nonchalant attitude toward the wedding, Jesse couldn’t help but feel annoyed. This is a major event in our lives; why does she seem so indifferent? Could it be that she still harbors feelings for Caleb? At that moment, Jesse was consumed by hatred. He wished he could go back to the day Caleb had the car accident. He longed to be the one to hit Caleb, disfiguring him so badly that the scoundrel would never dare to seduce another man’s fiancée again.
