Chapter 445 Truly Brilliant
โMrs. Lowell, before Ms. Sherritt was taken away, she insisted that you must save her,โ Javier added.
After hearing this, Rachel nodded. โOf course, Iโm going to help. I just canโt figure out whoโs trying to sabotage me.โ
Once she finished speaking, Rachel looked at Javier. โHelp me get in touch with the police chief.โ
โUnderstood.โ Javier nodded in agreement.
The following day, at Thornton Corporation, Madelynโs assistant Cyrus approached her before she could settle into her seat. โMs. Thornton, someone is trying to bail out the person arrested by the police.โ
โSo soon?โ Madelyn was astonished. Janessa was apprehended last night, yet her aunt is already trying to bail her out. โHmph, you wish!โ
โDid you allow her to be bailed out?โ Madelyn asked Cyrus.
Cyrus replied, โNot yet. After hearing the news, I promptly asked the director to delay the proceedings.โ
โNot bad at all.โ Madelyn nodded, then stood up. โLetโs go. We should personally visit the police station.โ
โUnderstood.โ
Subsequently, the two set off, with Cyrus following Madelyn.
Half an hour later, at the police station, a police officer tried to stop Madelyn. โHello, you canโt just walk in here. Are you here to report a crime?โ
โItโs neither of those. Iโm here to see your chief,โ Madelyn stated.
โSorry, but our chief doesnโt have time to see you,โ the officer said, clearly uncomfortable.
โIs that so?โ Madelyn sneered. โIโm here on a very important matter. If you hinder me, donโt say I didnโt warn you when your chief scolds you.โ
The officer seemed startled. He wouldnโt dare undermine the chiefโs authority.
In the end, he nodded. โPlease wait a moment.โ
Then, the officer went inside to notify his chief, Lucas Shepherd, who was dozing off in his office. When awakened, he asked, bewildered, โWhoโs looking for me?โ
โIโm not sure, but she was adamant about seeing you. She mentioned it was something very important.โ
At that moment, Madelyn spotted Lucas and greeted him. โChief Shepherd, itโs been a while.โ
Upon hearing that, Lucas looked up, his expression shifting. โOh, itโs you, Ms. Thornton!โ
Lucas flashed a smile and stepped forward. โMay I ask what brings you to our office?โ
Madelyn chuckled confidently. โChief Shepherd, letโs dispense with formalities. Iโm here because of the woman you apprehended last night.โ
โThe woman apprehended last night?โ Lucas turned to the officer. โWho was she?โ
The officer whispered, โChief Shepherd, itโs Janessa Sherritt. Sheโs about to be released on bail.โ
โI see. So, itโs her.โ Lucas nodded, then turned to Madelyn. โIndeed, there was a woman named Janessa.โ
โIndeed, sheโs the one Iโm looking for,โ Madelyn asserted. She subtly glanced at Lucas. โThis matter is complicated. I wonder if you have time to chat with me privately?โ
Hearing that, Lucas didnโt dare refuse. He pointed to his office. โLetโs discuss this inside.โ
Madelyn responded with a casual smile before heading inside.
โMs. Thornton, please have a seat.โ Lucas was exceptionally courteous, pulling out a chair. He couldnโt afford to offend Madelyn, who was difficult and temperamental, and had Lockhart Groupโs backing. Their CEO was a big shot.
Madelyn sat down. Following that, the two began to converse.
โI heard your station plans to release Janessa today, right?โ
Lucas nodded. โIndeed, but I received a message last night instructing me to release her. Could it be that youโre a friend of Janessaโs?โ
โFriend?โ Madelyn laughed. โChief Shepherd, youโve misunderstood. Janessa and I are not friends.โ
โWhatโs your relationship, then?โ Lucas asked, puzzled.
โEnemy.โ
Lucas was taken aback. He had assumed Madelyn wanted to help Janessa, but it was apparent she had ill intentions.
Observing Lucasโ expression, Madelyn chuckled. โTo be honest, I hope you handle this impartially. Someone like Janessa, who schemed against her own father, shouldnโt go unpunished. She also evaded unauthorized trading charges previouslyโtwice! Chief Shepherd, imagine if I exposed all this online. How could you justify your position then?โ
Madelyn spoke with a smile, but her tone carried a threat. Lucasโ face turned deathly pale. He hadnโt expected Madelyn to threaten him. However, these issues were due to his incompetence. He couldnโt refute it.
Lucas admitted, โMs. Thornton, youโre ingenious. Someone offered a substantial bribe to bail Janessa out. However, now it seems you donโt want her released. Is that right?โ
Lucas cast a probing glance at Madelyn.
Madelynโs smile widened. โYes. I want her to spend a few years in prison, reforming herself. With her illegal activities, she could face three to five years, right?โ
Madelyn remained composed. โIโm not here to make things difficult. Just act according to the law.โ
Lucas didnโt dare dissent. He was caught between those offering money and the pressure from Madelyn. No matter what choice he made, he would disappoint someone.
