Chapter 445 Truly Brilliant

โ€œMrs. Lowell, before Ms. Sherritt was taken away, she insisted that you must save her,โ€ Javier added.

After hearing this, Rachel nodded. โ€œOf course, Iโ€™m going to help. I just canโ€™t figure out whoโ€™s trying to sabotage me.โ€

Once she finished speaking, Rachel looked at Javier. โ€œHelp me get in touch with the police chief.โ€

โ€œUnderstood.โ€ Javier nodded in agreement.

The following day, at Thornton Corporation, Madelynโ€™s assistant Cyrus approached her before she could settle into her seat. โ€œMs. Thornton, someone is trying to bail out the person arrested by the police.โ€

โ€œSo soon?โ€ Madelyn was astonished. Janessa was apprehended last night, yet her aunt is already trying to bail her out. โ€œHmph, you wish!โ€

โ€œDid you allow her to be bailed out?โ€ Madelyn asked Cyrus.

Cyrus replied, โ€œNot yet. After hearing the news, I promptly asked the director to delay the proceedings.โ€

โ€œNot bad at all.โ€ Madelyn nodded, then stood up. โ€œLetโ€™s go. We should personally visit the police station.โ€

โ€œUnderstood.โ€

Subsequently, the two set off, with Cyrus following Madelyn.

Half an hour later, at the police station, a police officer tried to stop Madelyn. โ€œHello, you canโ€™t just walk in here. Are you here to report a crime?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s neither of those. Iโ€™m here to see your chief,โ€ Madelyn stated.

โ€œSorry, but our chief doesnโ€™t have time to see you,โ€ the officer said, clearly uncomfortable.

โ€œIs that so?โ€ Madelyn sneered. โ€œIโ€™m here on a very important matter. If you hinder me, donโ€™t say I didnโ€™t warn you when your chief scolds you.โ€

The officer seemed startled. He wouldnโ€™t dare undermine the chiefโ€™s authority.

In the end, he nodded. โ€œPlease wait a moment.โ€

Then, the officer went inside to notify his chief, Lucas Shepherd, who was dozing off in his office. When awakened, he asked, bewildered, โ€œWhoโ€™s looking for me?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not sure, but she was adamant about seeing you. She mentioned it was something very important.โ€

At that moment, Madelyn spotted Lucas and greeted him. โ€œChief Shepherd, itโ€™s been a while.โ€

Upon hearing that, Lucas looked up, his expression shifting. โ€œOh, itโ€™s you, Ms. Thornton!โ€

Lucas flashed a smile and stepped forward. โ€œMay I ask what brings you to our office?โ€

Madelyn chuckled confidently. โ€œChief Shepherd, letโ€™s dispense with formalities. Iโ€™m here because of the woman you apprehended last night.โ€

โ€œThe woman apprehended last night?โ€ Lucas turned to the officer. โ€œWho was she?โ€

The officer whispered, โ€œChief Shepherd, itโ€™s Janessa Sherritt. Sheโ€™s about to be released on bail.โ€

โ€œI see. So, itโ€™s her.โ€ Lucas nodded, then turned to Madelyn. โ€œIndeed, there was a woman named Janessa.โ€

โ€œIndeed, sheโ€™s the one Iโ€™m looking for,โ€ Madelyn asserted. She subtly glanced at Lucas. โ€œThis matter is complicated. I wonder if you have time to chat with me privately?โ€

Hearing that, Lucas didnโ€™t dare refuse. He pointed to his office. โ€œLetโ€™s discuss this inside.โ€

Madelyn responded with a casual smile before heading inside.

โ€œMs. Thornton, please have a seat.โ€ Lucas was exceptionally courteous, pulling out a chair. He couldnโ€™t afford to offend Madelyn, who was difficult and temperamental, and had Lockhart Groupโ€™s backing. Their CEO was a big shot.

Madelyn sat down. Following that, the two began to converse.

โ€œI heard your station plans to release Janessa today, right?โ€

Lucas nodded. โ€œIndeed, but I received a message last night instructing me to release her. Could it be that youโ€™re a friend of Janessaโ€™s?โ€

โ€œFriend?โ€ Madelyn laughed. โ€œChief Shepherd, youโ€™ve misunderstood. Janessa and I are not friends.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s your relationship, then?โ€ Lucas asked, puzzled.

โ€œEnemy.โ€

Lucas was taken aback. He had assumed Madelyn wanted to help Janessa, but it was apparent she had ill intentions.

Observing Lucasโ€™ expression, Madelyn chuckled. โ€œTo be honest, I hope you handle this impartially. Someone like Janessa, who schemed against her own father, shouldnโ€™t go unpunished. She also evaded unauthorized trading charges previouslyโ€”twice! Chief Shepherd, imagine if I exposed all this online. How could you justify your position then?โ€

Madelyn spoke with a smile, but her tone carried a threat. Lucasโ€™ face turned deathly pale. He hadnโ€™t expected Madelyn to threaten him. However, these issues were due to his incompetence. He couldnโ€™t refute it.

Lucas admitted, โ€œMs. Thornton, youโ€™re ingenious. Someone offered a substantial bribe to bail Janessa out. However, now it seems you donโ€™t want her released. Is that right?โ€

Lucas cast a probing glance at Madelyn.

Madelynโ€™s smile widened. โ€œYes. I want her to spend a few years in prison, reforming herself. With her illegal activities, she could face three to five years, right?โ€

Madelyn remained composed. โ€œIโ€™m not here to make things difficult. Just act according to the law.โ€

Lucas didnโ€™t dare dissent. He was caught between those offering money and the pressure from Madelyn. No matter what choice he made, he would disappoint someone.
