Chapter 398: Abuse of Power

Then, she put away her phone and smiled at her father, saying, โ€œItโ€™s nothing much, just some idle chatter with a friend.โ€

Upon hearing this, Derek nodded, then suddenly sighed deeply. It was a sigh filled with unexpressed emotions, a profound melancholy.

โ€œDad, whatโ€™s wrong? Are you facing problems?โ€ Madelyn immediately asked, concerned.

Derek shook his head helplessly. โ€œItโ€™s not a big deal. I just thought of your sister and felt it was a pity. No matter what, sheโ€™s still my daughter,โ€ he began, regret lacing his voice. โ€œInitially, my intention was to secure her a position in the company, to help lighten our load. But now, it seems, itโ€™s all in vain. Euniceโ€™s nature has become increasingly similar to her spiteful mother, which I donโ€™t like at all. Yet, she is still my childโ€ฆโ€

At this point, Derek let out a heavy sigh. โ€œAh, this is so frustrating. I donโ€™t know how to make her listen.โ€

Upon hearing this, Madelyn, though initially perplexed, devised a strategy. โ€œDad, what do you think about sending Eunice abroad for further studies?โ€

Seeing her fatherโ€™s confusion, Madelyn explained, โ€œThink about it. Euniceโ€™s professional knowledge is lacking. Sending her abroad will not only aid her learning but also conveniently cut off her contact with her mother. Euniceโ€™s personality is largely influenced by her mother. So, why donโ€™t we sever their connection? Who knows, maybe Eunice will realize her mistakes and show remorse in the future?โ€

Upon hearing this, Derek fell into deep thought. He realized Madelyn was correct. Sending Eunice abroad was a plan that killed two birds with one stone.

After considering it, Derek nodded. โ€œAlright, weโ€™ll do as you suggest.โ€ He immediately had someone begin working on the matter.

Madelyn was pleased. Upon returning home, she informed Sebastian. He remained indifferent, seemingly unopposed. After giving it some thought, he felt sending Eunice abroad was a good idea; at the very least, it would stop her from causing Madelyn trouble. As long as Madelyn was happy, Sebastian had no complaints.

โ€œEunice, after youโ€™ve gone abroad, I hope you can truly reflect on your actions and turn over a new leaf,โ€ Derek said, sighing heavily, his words laden with emotion.

Eunice, recently heartbroken and having suffered a business failure, felt completely deflated. Her fatherโ€™s insistence on sending her abroad was something she deeply resented. However, with no other options, she nodded in resignation. โ€œI understand.โ€

Then, he turned to Madelyn. โ€œMadelyn, may I have a word with you in private?โ€

Madelyn, initially surprised, shrugged nonchalantly. โ€œSure, why not?โ€ The two moved aside to converse.

Unexpectedly, Euniceโ€™s expression turned vicious. She glared at Madelyn with resentment.

โ€œDonโ€™t think that just because Iโ€™ve gone abroad, I canโ€™t do anything to you! Let me tell you, I will definitely return. When that time comes, Iโ€™ll take back everything thatโ€™s rightfully mine. Just you wait!โ€

Upon hearing this, Madelyn softly chuckled. Unexpectedly, Eunice had left her with some harsh words before departing. With a dismissive sneer, Madelyn responded, โ€œSure, Iโ€™ll be waiting.โ€

โ€œHmph,โ€ Eunice retorted, turning to board the plane.

As Derek watched her disappear at the airport, disappointment lingered in his eyes. Madelyn stepped forward to console him. โ€œDad, donโ€™t worry too much. She will definitely change for the better after this trip.โ€

โ€œHopefully,โ€ Derek sighed. The group then returned to the company.

After seeing Eunice off, things concluded. Free from the troubles caused by the mother and daughter, Madelynโ€™s mood improved significantly. It was time for a thorough company cleanup.

Regina, during her time, had surreptitiously planted many of her own people within the company; Madelyn had yet to completely remove them.

Chapter 398: Abuse of Power

โ€œUnderstood,โ€ Cyrus nodded in agreement. In a short while, he had gathered the information Madelyn needed.

After a cursory glance, Madelyn instructed, โ€œThis afternoon, we will sort out these files together. We will pick out all the irrelevant staff in the company, especially those associated with Regina or referred by her, and then carry out a major layoff.โ€

Upon hearing this, Cyrus was dumbfounded.

Seeing his puzzled look, Madelyn explained, โ€œAs far as I know, the company has been supporting a lot of unnecessary staff over the past couple of years, hasnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œIndeed,โ€ Cyrus replied softly.

โ€œNo company is willing to carry dead weight. Moreover, after the incident at the pharmaceutical factory, our company needs to refresh itself to scale greater heights. Therefore, we absolutely needed to clear out all the deadweight, especially those left behind by Regina, and inject some youthful vitality back into the company. In this way, the company would be completely rejuvenated.โ€

โ€œI get it nowโ€ฆโ€ Cyrus finally understood.

She was planning a thorough overhaul. Although bold, it made sense. Over the years, Thornton Corporation resembled an old man shuffling along; no regression, but no progress either. Perhaps the company would flourish under Ms. Thorntonโ€™s leadership.

The entire afternoon was spent sorting out employees to be let go. They then posted a public notice announcing the layoffs.

For a moment, the entire company buzzed with excitement and speculation: โ€œOh my God, is the company planning to lay off employees?โ€ โ€œWhy are they laying people off all of a sudden? Thank goodness Iโ€™m not on the list.โ€ โ€œThe actions of Ms. Thornton are quite extreme, arenโ€™t they? Even in the past, when the Chairman was around, there were never any layoffs for no reason.โ€ โ€œExactly. Is she abusing her position just because she has the backing of Mr. Thornton?โ€ โ€œWell, who knows?โ€
