Chapter 61: The Man in My Dream Doesn’t Eat Mushrooms

A brief realization hit me. Trete had no idea she was the woman in my diary. I no longer felt as embarrassed. I yanked my hand out of her grasp and straightened up. Then, Houcedà imili, “I’ll do whatever you want. I don’t interfere with you and Randall, so don’t poke your nose in my business.”

Yver’s hand hung frozen. “So, what you’re saying is, you don’t care if I’m marrying Schermen, and I shouldn’t care if you’re thinking about other women?”

That wasn’t what I meant, but as I thought about it, why not? We were getting a divorce anyway.

“Thought so,” she said. “Change your mind. Don’t blame me for not warning you if we make the flight.”

Yvette’s face darkened. She lowered her paperwork. I didn’t understand the weight of her warning. Initially, I shrugged it off, miffed and wary.

Yvette didn’t follow me. I headed downstairs, where Enima was already cleaning the kitchen. Oliver had arrived and politely greeted me, “Good morning, Mr. Yatr.”

I waved him off and settled on the couch. I probably won’t be hurt when we return from this trip. Just call me Twen.

Oliver smiled politely. Holanda Yotte was dressed in a black pompadour dress paired with black-red heels and a belde timocchi coat. She was overwhelmingly commanding.

I clicked my tongue and averted my gaze; I was no longer mesmerized by her beauty. I got up and headed for the door. “Let’s—”

Oliver droned on while I got into the back seat. Virite was clearly displeased as she put her head down and shut her eyes without a word.

I had no intention of engaging with her either. The journey to the airport took over forty minutes, so I pulled out my phone and started scrolling through TikTok to check out beautiful women on the internet. There were plenty of women, so why would I waste my time on her?

I could faintly hear her heavy breathing. I frowned, and my smile faded. Why was she so annoying? Couldn’t she sleep quietly?

I turned to look at her and saw her eyes closed. As she massaged her temples, her face looked pale and uncomfortable. I frowned. The last thing I wanted was to deal with a burden since we’d be traveling together. “Are you feeling unwell?” I asked through the rearview mirror. “Ms. Jenning, are you having a headache again? There’s medication in the car. Do you want some?”

Teme could reply. I exclaimed in surprise. “Headache again? You’ve been getting them a lot lately.”

I’d known Yvette for years in my previous life, so I knew her medical history better than anyone else. She had occasional gastric pain but never headaches.

Yvette kept her eyes shut and remained silent. Oliver explained on her behalf. “Yes, it’s been happening often recently. She’s also been having nightmares and not sleeping well. Could you…”

My jaw dropped. I suddenly remembered the last time she’d picked me up at my dad’s house and dozed off in the car. She’d also had a nightmare then.

“Frequent insomnia and nightmares could be symptoms of a brain tumor,” I said. “You might want to get checked out.”

“We may be far apart, but it would be a real shame if something were to happen to you.”

Yvette had been healthy in my previous life, but now that I’d been reborn, she was exhibiting all these issues. What if this was karma? What if she was the one to fall ill instead of me? If she passed away, I wouldn’t even get a dollar out of it, as we weren’t legally tied.

Yvette suddenly opened her eyes and shot me a look, a sinister smirk curled on her lips. “If that’s the case, don’t worry. I’ll drag you down with me. We’ll be a couple in the afterlife too.”

She chuckled. “Then I’ll pay double. It’s worth it as long as I can avenge my past.”

Oliver stifled his laughter and tried to make a sound. I funnily crossed my arms. “I was trying to be kind! You de— MYLARADARE! I joke, her daughters would get worse and torture her to her death!”

A faint smile played at the corner of Yvette’s lips. Then, she closed her eyes again. When we reached the airport, everything was ready. We boarded the plane, and to my dismay, I was assigned to a seat far away, when uttered an apologetic, “I can’t possibly look after you, Mr. Vates. My… my… ”

The word trailed off, echoing in my ears.

I was woken by the inertia of the flight. I opened my box of tonkatsu pasta, only to find it overflowing. I examined it and exclaimed, "Yvette, how do you know I like this?”

She smiled slightly. “You mentioned it during a fight with the others. There is no way you couldn’t be deeply in love; it shows you couldn’t keep up the charade.”

Yvette didn’t respond. She seemed genuinely unwell and was too exhausted to argue. Her pale lips and furrowed brow betrayed her discomfort.

Then, she received a call from Randall the moment we landed. In less than thirty seconds, I witnessed the softest and most gentle side of her I’d never seen. “Got it. Stay there. I’ll come soon…”
