Chapter 37
Wendyโs smile was as gentle as a whisper. โIโve got this,โ she said, her eyes showing a mix of thanks and resolve. โIโll pick something I really love,โ she added, her gaze softening. โGet some rest; youโve been worn out. Natalieโs been a disruption since she returned. Iโll find her a place outside to live.โ
Helping Natalie find a place of her own was Wendyโs best idea. She couldnโt abandon her own family, despite their complicated relationship.
Wendy heard that Natalie had quit school early and figured she was probably struggling financially post-divorce. Despite the pain from Natalieโs past actions, Wendy decided to support her financially, but no more than that.
Nick had been against Natalieโs return from the start, seeing her as a threat to his reputation and his plans for Jennifer.
โLetโs give her that old apartment on the outskirts,โ he suggested, his concern as fake as a three-dollar bill. โNo one will question us since we brought her in as a foster child.โ
โExactly what I was thinking.โ Wendy agreed with a nod, her thoughts turning to Natalie. โNatalie, itโs not me you should blame. If anyoneโs at fault, itโs you. I canโt have a daughter who wants to break up her parents' happiness in my home.โ
Easton returned to a silent home, the lack of Natalieโs presence hitting him harder than he expected. He usually found solace in her being there, keeping things in order.
Now, as he loosened his tie, irritation washed over him. It seemed ridiculous to him that a woman he considered malicious had gotten to him, yet he often ignored the careful attention she had shown him for two years.
Feeling restless, Easton decided a shower was in order, hoping it would clear his mind. But even as he headed upstairs, the thought of Natalie on a date, laughing and smiling at someone else, made his stomach churn.
Upon returning home, Natalie hoped to have a private conversation with Valerie upstairs. However, Valerie had other plans. โI need some reading time,โ Valerie insisted, pulling away. โIโm heading to your study.โ
Natalie frowned in confusion. โThe books arenโt going to vanish. Why the need to read them at this very moment?โ
Valerieโs frustration was clear. โIโm diving into some romance novels to find you a partner whoโs worthy of you, someone who wonโt cause you the heartache youโve suffered,โ she stated firmly, her resolve clear.
Natalie felt a warmth in her chest. โValerie, I swear, Iโm done with all that. I wonโt go back to Easton,โ she promised, rushing over to hug Valerie tightly. โIโve learned my lesson. Iโm going to focus on myself, my business, and making Grandpa proud.โ
Valerie patted Natalieโs back, glad that Natalie had finally come to her senses. โThatโs what I want to hear. The stars say you and Maurice are a match. Go, take care of yourself, and tomorrow, go meet him looking your best. Iโm hitting the books.โ
Natalie smiled, agreeing. โDonโt stay up too late. Remember, the room next to the study is yours. Get some sleep after youโre done.โ
Valerie, excited to dive into the books, headed to the study, leaving Natalie to her thoughts.
In her room, Natalie collapsed onto the bed, taking in the familiar surroundings. She smiled, feeling the weight of a fresh start.
The next day, Natalieโs phone buzzed her awake. Seeing Eastonโs name on the screen, she recalled their meeting at the courthouse. She picked up promptly. โEaston, are you all set for the courthouse this morning?โ
