Chapter 538
It was Daxton.
His eyes were blazing with anger as he stared at Trevor with an expression that was anything but friendly.
He had just passed by and happened to hear Carmenโs voice. He moved a little closer and caught every single word Trevor said.
If Alice had heard this, she probably wouldโve just nagged a little and let the matter slide as Trevor was her own son.
But as far as Daxton was concerned, Carmen could do no wrong, and anyone who crossed her was automatically in the wrong.
He asked with a darkened face, โWhat did you just say?โ
Trevor knew exactly how short-tempered Daxton could be. He let out a cold laugh and said, โWhy donโt you ask what Carmen did first?โ
The moment Daxton turned his gaze to her, Carmen immediately dropped her eyes, putting on that helpless, pitiful look as she explained everything from start to finish. She sobbed, โItโs my fault. If Iโd just paid a little more attention back then, I wouldโve figured out exactly what Trevor wanted to ask, and none of this mess wouldโve happened.โ
Trevor couldnโt believe that Carmen could still twist the truth right in front of Daxton! He was so mad he pointed right at Carmenโs nose and snapped, โHow dare you say that? You call that not paying attention? You knew exactly what I was asking! You just realized that Aubree wasnโt here and jumped at the chance to take all the credit!โ
Back when Aubree was still with the Wilson family, Trevor was one of those who unfairly took Carmenโs side without caring about right or wrong, and he never thought Aubree had anything to feel wronged about.
He didnโt think she had any reason to feel sorry for herself.
He believed that leaving the orphanage and being reunited with the Wilson family was the luckiest thing that could ever happen to her. Compared to all the wealth and privilege she got, a few harsh words were nothing to complain about.
If anything, Trevor felt that Aubree shouldโve been feeling grateful.
He believed that Aubree was merely acting, always portraying herself as the victim to garner their attention and sympathy, attempting to evoke their pity.
But now that he was the one in the hot seat, Trevor finally realized just how suffocating it felt.
Carmen mightโve been telling the truth, but she spun it in such a way that it meant something different. Trevor had no idea how to start arguing back, and it just made him look like he was making a fuss for no reason.
That was precisely how Daxton perceived it.
โThatโs enough!โ Daxton snapped. โYou screwed up and went after the wrong person. Now that you finally realize Aubreeโs actually worth something, she doesnโt even care about you anymore. So youโre feeling all sorry for yourself and trying to dump the blame on Carmen?โ
โTrevor, and you call yourself an elder brother,โ Daxton said, his voice thick with mockery.
In a voice dripping with sarcasm, he added, โYouโre truly impressive. You got played, ended up in this sorry state, and instead of figuring out how to deal with it or fight back, all you can do is stand here and take it out on Carmen.โ
Daxton then stepped in front of Carmen, shielding her, and whispered, โItโs okay. Iโm here. How could this possibly be your fault? You didnโt even know thatโs what he was asking about. You did go to the set, and itโs not your fault he said yes.โ
Carmen hid the smugness in her eyes and murmured, โIf only Iโd figured it out back then. Then Trevor wouldnโt have misunderstood Aubree for so long, and Aubree wouldnโt have done all this, making things get so out of hand.โ
โTrevor really canโt handle anything. After all, he couldnโt even deal with Aubree,โ Daxton scoffed.
They just kept talking over him and acted like Trevor didnโt even matter.
Trevor held back as long as he could, but finally let out a cold sneer, โYeah, maybe Iโm useless. And you? For all your big talk, have you ever actually gotten the better of her? If I remember right, you guys have all been played by her plenty of times, too, havenโt you?
โIโm not even gonna get into the whole stalker mess. I know I had mistreated Aubree before, and she schemed and got her revenge on me. Fine, Iโll admit it. But from now on, as far as Iโm concerned, Aubree is the only one Iโll call my sister. Anyone who dares mess with her will have to answer to me.โ
Daxton let out a mocking laugh in response, โWhy didnโt you do all this sooner?โ
