Chapter 209

Jonathan walked toward me immediately. “Elise.”

There was a softness in his voice I’d never heard before.

I frowned, already out of patience. “Are you here to bring me the divorce agreement?”

His smile faltered for a second, then quickly returned. Avoiding the topic, he pulled a massive bouquet of roses out of nowhere.

“Elise, do you like them?”

Gasps rippled through the crowd around us.

They were all my colleagues. Ever since the amnesia, I’d kept my distance, careful not to get too close. The last thing I expected was for Jonathan to pull such a cheesy stunt in front of them.

I answered without thinking, “I don’t like roses. I actually hate them.”

That’s what I said, but the little spark in my chest at the sight of them was real.

So, I did like roses after all.

That realization surprised me, because back when I was 18, I didn’t like flowers at all.

The crowd was growing, and I was starting to feel uncomfortable. I urged Jonathan to leave.

But he stood firm, unwilling to move. I had no choice but to tug on his sleeve and say, “Let’s talk in private…”

Jonathan led me into the car, and before I realized it, I was seated in a restaurant.

Jonathan looked at me with a bleak expression. “Have dinner with me.”

I frowned. “If I do, will you finally agree to the divorce?”

He didn’t answer right away. After a long pause, he said, “If you won’t have this dinner with me, then I’m not agreeing to the divorce.”

I picked up the knife and fork without hesitation. He had clearly planned everything—red wine, candles, elaborate floral arrangements. The whole thing screamed romance.

The portions were small, but the presentation was beautiful.

I finished quickly and dabbed at the corner of my lips. “I’m done. I’ll be leaving.”

As I stood up, Jonathan looked at me, a flicker of hurt in his eyes. “Elise, did you forget what day it is?”

I paused, genuinely confused. “What day?”

His fingers instantly tightened around the silverware. After a moment, he said with a trace of sadness in his voice, “It’s our wedding anniversary.”

“Wedding anniversary?”

I searched my mind but came up completely blank. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t remember how we’d ever spent it before.

Seeing how sad he looked, I held back the sarcasm. “Well then, this can be our last dinner together.”

He didn’t say a word. Shadows fell under his eyes.

From where I sat, it only made his already sharp features look even more striking.

I knew he wanted to fix things, but to me, there was nothing left worth fixing. “Sorry, I need to use the restroom.”

After that, I turned and walked away.

There was a huge mirror inside the restroom. I turned on the faucet, letting the cold water sting my skin and clear my head.

I looked at my reflection and reminded myself not to fall back into the past.

I gave my cheeks a light slap to snap myself out of it.

Just as I turned around, I saw Jonathan walking straight toward me. His gaze was deep, filled with emotion I couldn’t quite read.

“Elise, please… Try to remember…”

Before I could react, my back hit the wall behind me. Then he kissed me, wrapping his arms tightly around my waist, trapping me in place. His voice was gentle, but his actions were anything but.

“Jonathan, let go of me!”

I cried out, but he took that chance to deepen the kiss.

Please let us know if you find any errors, so we can fix them.
