Chapter 208
I had never seen Jonathan, who was always so cold and indifferent, lose control like that. I just stood there and let them fight.
I wasn’t about to waste my energy playing peacemaker. They were both being childish.
I shook my head and went straight back to the office.
What I didn’t expect was that Jonathan was faster than me. By the time I got to the front of the office building, he was already there waiting.
There was a faint bruise at the corner of his lips, but his eyes lit up when he saw me. “I’ll come pick you up after work,” he said.
I looked at the bruise, and Jonathan shifted awkwardly under my gaze. “Don’t worry, I’m fine. He took the worst of it.”
I scoffed. “Who said I was worried about you? Don’t flatter yourself.”
Jonathan’s expression darkened, but he still said, “I’ll come pick you up after work.”
I was running out of patience. “I said I want a divorce. Which part of that don’t you understand?”
Jonathan looked genuinely hurt and lowered his voice. “Elise, you lost your memory, and that’s why you don’t remember how you used to feel about me. Once you remember, everything will be different…”
“Why would I want to remember? Just because you and Alicia weren’t having an affair? That doesn’t erase everything I went through, and it won’t change my decision to divorce you. Or do you think once I remember, I’ll turn back into that pathetic woman I used to be, the one who forgave you the second you lifted a finger?”
Jonathan’s voice came out hoarse. “I never thought like that…”
Seeing him like that made me feel a sudden wave of helplessness. I looked him in the eye and said, “Jonathan, when I first woke up and realized I had lost all my memories, I was scared. But when I found out you were my husband, I was genuinely happy. I’d heard of you before and thought you were a good man.
“I always had hope for marriage. I believed I’d end up with someone responsible and dependable, but I never imagined the man I’d marry would turn out like this.
“I’m not just disappointed in you, Jonathan. I’m disappointed in myself. I thought I’d love myself more, but instead I let you hurt me under the excuse of love, until I no longer even recognized who I was.
“Since I woke up with amnesia, I’ve never once felt care or love from you, just indifference and irritation. So what if nothing happened between you and Alicia? You still never fulfilled your duty as a husband. You let her hurt me, and you hurt me yourself. This marriage isn’t worth holding on to. Let’s get a divorce.”
I said everything that was in my heart.
In that moment, I saw the hope drain from Jonathan’s eyes. I turned around and didn’t look back.
From that day on, I refused to hear anything more about Jonathan.
His social circle had always been full of sycophants. After what happened, they started nosing around, trying to get some information from me. Some tried to curry favor, but I ignored them.
I focused on my own life and waited for Jonathan to finally agree to the divorce.
As soon as work ended, I leaned back and stretched out my arms.
I was planning to ask Frederick to dinner to properly thank him, but as soon as I stepped outside, I saw a black luxury car parked out front.
My coworkers started whispering among themselves, exchanging looks and sneaking glances at me. I couldn’t show my annoyance, so I forced a smile.
Then I saw Jonathan leaning against the car. Tall and effortlessly handsome, he was the kind of man who drew attention the moment he entered a room.
I bit back a curse and kept my eyes straight as I walked toward him.
