Chapter 38
Robert looked at Stephen’s face and slapped his forehead. He said helplessly, “Mr. Hoffman, I really have nothing to ask of you.”
Feeling displeased with Robert’s attitude, Stephen said, “Since you won’t tell me, let me offer some options. First, if you ever conduct business in Yrinas, I can assist you. Second, if you need connections, I can act as your liaison. Third, though not highly profitable, my family owns a property I can give you to compensate for the postage stamp.”
Everything Stephen said was extremely valuable to those in his circle. The Hoffman family, though based in Lofbury, commanded respect in Navarre; they were, after all, one of the top three families. Stephen didn't readily agree to meet anyone. If Robert needed to contact someone, Stephen offered to act as an intermediary. His presence alone would seal the deal. Who would disrespect Stephen?
Stephen considered the third option most suitable for Robert, who was trying to cultivate a relationship with the Labelle family. Giving him a small business worth only tens of thousands of dollars would also establish a connection with the Hoffmans, furthering Robert’s success in Navarre and with the Labelle family.
Listening to these attractive conditions, Robert shook his head. “Mr. Hoffman, I’m truly not interested.”
Seeing Robert’s continued refusal, a trace of disgust flickered in Stephen’s eyes. “Young man, do you think this isn't enough? I admit your actions today impressed me, but don’t push your luck.”
Robert sighed. “Mr. Hoffman, let me explain. I am—”
“Dad!” The study door burst open, and Marlondo entered with two young men.
Seeing this, Stephen, already unhappy, exploded, slapping the table. “Who allowed you in?”
“Dad, don’t be angry,” Marlondo said, quickly winking at the younger men.
The two young men immediately approached. They had already planned their strategy outside.
“Grandpa, please calm down. My uncle is acting in your best interest. We don’t want you to be deceived!” One young man offered Stephen coffee.
The other glanced at Robert. “Yes, Grandpa, many people covet our family’s fortune!”
Stephen looked at his grandsons and son, suppressing his anger.
“You’d better have a good reason,” Stephen said, taking a sip of coffee.
The young man who gave him the coffee was relieved.
Marlondo said, “Dad, I’ve spoken to someone in the Labelle family. They haven’t contacted the Zabinski family recently. Regarding that auction, the postage stamp was acquired by the head of the Zabinski family, who is no longer in the country. How did the Labelle family obtain the stamp?”
Despite his age, Stephen’s sharp business mind remained. He understood immediately.
Stephen frowned deeply.
Marlondo continued, “Dad, the torn stamp was thoroughly soaked. Its authenticity is questionable. Who would dare ask the head of the Zabinski family if the stamp was given to the Labelle family?”
