Chapter 792
โMy marriage to her was never about love,โ Ryan said coldly, his eyes darkening. โIt was just a business deal. I donโt care about her, and she doesnโt care about me.โ The mention of the Chamberlain family seemed to leave a bitter taste in his mouth, like it was a stain on his life.
โThe law saysโฆโ I started to argue, but Ryan suddenly pressed his finger to my lips, cutting me off.
Annoyed, I pushed his hand away and ducked under his arm, stepping out of his embrace.
โSo, what, you called me all the way to Braylin just to play housekeeper for you? Or was this all about keeping me safe?โ I shot back, my voice thick with sarcasm.
โYeah, you could say that,โ Ryan replied smoothly. โVic, did you forget youโve still got family here? Sometimes when the titans clash, itโs the regular people who end up paying the price.โ
Suddenly, panic hit meโmy brother was still working in Braylin. My mind went totally blank.
โYou meanโฆ your grandfather might actually come after me?โ My voice trembled. Just thinking about Jeffrey Jenningsโsomeone whoโd been through countless power struggles, with eyes that never showed a hint of warmthโsent a chill down my spine. For the sake of the Jennings familyโs interests, he wouldnโt hesitate to eliminate someone like me, a so-called dangerous distraction, at the first sign of trouble.
I clutched my head, my whole body shaking. In that moment, fear and the thought of death made me tremble uncontrollably.
Seeing how scared I was, Ryan immediately came over to reassure me. โLook, maybe Iโm just blowing things out of proportion, but I really donโt want anything bad to happen to you.โ
I looked at him, my eyes full of sorrow. โIf you guys are like gods, then why did you come chasing after a mortal like me back then? Ryan, you were the one who came to me first.โ
Ryan reached out to wipe away my tears, but I shoved his hand aside. โMortals are short-sighted, always getting lured by money and feelings. Weโre doomed from the startโso why do you even bother trying to protect me?โ
Ryan was stunned, caught off guard by my words. He looked completely lost, wanting to hold me again, but I dodged away. โIf my family gets hurt because of me, Iโll never forgive myself. Maybe Iโm the one who really should pay the price.โ
With that, I sank to the floor, sobbing. Looking back on these two short years since I was reborn, it felt like they dragged on longer than my entire previous life. But the sights Iโd seen, the things Iโd experiencedโthey were so much more vivid, so much more intense than anything before.
โDid Fate really bring me back just to let me live for only two short years?โ I thought, bitterness welling up inside me.
โVic, thatโs enough, donโt cry anymore. Let me take you out of here,โ Ryan said gently, his voice cutting through my haze.
I had no idea how long Iโd been sobbing, but then Ryanโs soft voice drifted to my ears. โAs long as you stop crying, thatโs all I want.โ
I ignored him, still curled up with my head on my knees. The tears stopped, but my mind kept spinning, cold and clear. In these past two years, Iโd made plenty of cash, but my heart was a total mess. And every guy I got tangled up with was more dangerous than the last.
โMaybe you really canโt enjoy all the blessings life throws at you,โ I thought bitterly.
โVic, Iโll get a car to take you back to Shaville. Please, just stop crying. Iโm sorry for pulling you into all this,โ Ryan said quietly, leaning back against the wall behind me.
I reached out my hand, voice tired. โCan you hand me some tissues?โ
Ryan hurried off to grab some tissues from the living room. I wiped away my tears and snot, but as soon as I tried to get up, my legs went completely numb and I crashed to the floor in a total mess.
My skin was way too sensitiveโjust that one fall left the whole side of my left leg scraped up and red, with a couple bloody scratches from the grit.
Ryan came out of the living room just in time to see me sprawled on the floor. He strode over in a hurry. โLegs fell asleep? Let me check.โ
After a while, I finally managed to get up, hobbling toward the living room. โRyan, Iโve made up my mindโฆ I want out of all the grudges and drama in your family.โ
Ryan looked at me, totally blank, like he couldnโt process what Iโd just said.
