Chapter 791

Ryan suddenly stepped closer, making every hair on my body stand on end. Instinctively, I turned away and took two steps back, putting some space between us.

My reaction made Ryanโ€™s eyes darken. He stared at me, his gaze heavy and brooding.

โ€œLet me go,โ€ I demanded, my voice sharp with anger.

โ€œNo,โ€ Ryan said firmly, his tone leaving no room for argument.

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll leave on my own,โ€ I snapped, spinning around and bolting toward the front door.

But Ryan was quicker. With long strides, he caught up to me in seconds, blocking my path at the doorway. โ€œVictoria, are you afraid of dying?โ€

The moment I heard that unlucky word, I shuddered, staring at him in disbelief.

Ryanโ€™s voice dropped to a whisper. โ€œDonโ€™t go outside. Itโ€™s safer here.โ€

My breath hitched, and my voice trembled. โ€œI donโ€™t understand what youโ€™re saying.โ€

Ryanโ€™s gaze bore into mine. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, I messed things up. Now things between me and Uncle Ryan are getting worse, and Jeffrey Jennings is furious.โ€

A chill ran down my spine. I took a few more steps back. โ€œSo, because heโ€™s angry, am I in danger?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know,โ€ Ryan admitted, his voice low. โ€œBut a couple days ago, one of Jeffrey Jenningsโ€™s guys got investigated. It didnโ€™t touch my grandfather directly, but that guyโ€™s been with him for over twenty yearsโ€“he knows a ton of stuff.โ€ Ryanโ€™s eyes showed a hint of worry.

โ€œSo now Iโ€™m getting dragged into this too?โ€ I shot back, feeling totally wronged.

โ€œNo,โ€ Ryan replied quickly, his voice gentler. โ€œIโ€™m just saying, Jeffrey Jennings is furious right now, and Iโ€™m worried he might lash out at you. Plus, Uncle Ryanโ€™s got a mining operation overseas thatโ€™s tangled up in all this, so heโ€™ll be busy for a while. He might not be able to watch your back.โ€

โ€œRyan, are you punishing me?โ€ I asked, my anger draining away in an instant. I leaned against the wall, my eyes lowered. โ€œIs this your way of punishing me for what happened between me and Edward?โ€

Ryanโ€™s breathing grew heavier, his lips pressed into a thin line, but he didnโ€™t say a word.

โ€œI guess I really let love cloud my judgment,โ€ I said, looking at Ryan with a bitter smile. โ€œI chose someone I never shouldโ€™ve fallen for, and now Iโ€™ve boxed myself in.โ€

โ€œYou can still choose a better path,โ€ Ryan said, his eyes dark and unreadable. โ€œIf you took a wrong turn, you can always come back.โ€

โ€œCome back just to get back together with you?โ€ I let out a weak laugh. โ€œRyan, you take love way too seriously. Itโ€™s honestly suffocating, you know?โ€

โ€œAll I know isโ€ฆโ€ Ryanโ€™s eyes turned red, looking like Iโ€™d just shattered his whole world. โ€œI came back to where it all began, but you werenโ€™t there anymore. You couldโ€™ve picked anyone, so why did it have to be Uncle Ryan?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ I swallowed hard, words stuck in my throat. โ€˜People are strange sometimesโ€“we ignore whatโ€™s right in front of us, always reaching for the moon instead.โ€™

Ryanโ€™s body went rigid, a flash of hurt crossing his face. He let out a dry laugh. โ€œSo, what is it about me that you donโ€™t want?โ€

โ€œRyan, you were married back then,โ€ I argued, my voice steady. โ€œIโ€™d already moved on from you. I thought I was free, and Edward and I were both single. Why couldnโ€™t we be together? Youโ€™re not being fair."

โ€œWhy did you have to pick him?โ€ Ryanโ€™s voice was shaking with emotion. โ€œNathan or Jaredโ€“either of them wouldโ€™ve been fine, theyโ€™re both just waiting for you to love them. But Uncle Ryan? I canโ€™t accept that, not ever.โ€

He closed the distance between us in a few quick strides. I tried to step back, but there was nowhere left to goโ€”the wall was solid behind me, trapping me in place.

Ryan threw his arms out, caging me in against the wall. His eyes were wild, swirling with pain. โ€œWhy? Do you know how shattered I was when I found out? It was like Comet smashing into the earthโ€”like I was about to die.โ€

I stared into his eyes, completely floored. His pupils quivered, barely holding it together. โ€œThat kind of suffocating painโ€ฆ Iโ€™ve never felt anything like it in my life.โ€

โ€œRyan, do you even hear yourself?โ€ I shot back, my voice sharp with disbelief. โ€œYou were married at the time.โ€ I couldnโ€™t believe itโ€“after all this, Ryan was still hung up on me even after getting married. Honestly, if I were Fiona, Iโ€™d be pissed too.
