Chapter 791
Ryan suddenly stepped closer, making every hair on my body stand on end. Instinctively, I turned away and took two steps back, putting some space between us.
My reaction made Ryanโs eyes darken. He stared at me, his gaze heavy and brooding.
โLet me go,โ I demanded, my voice sharp with anger.
โNo,โ Ryan said firmly, his tone leaving no room for argument.
โThen Iโll leave on my own,โ I snapped, spinning around and bolting toward the front door.
But Ryan was quicker. With long strides, he caught up to me in seconds, blocking my path at the doorway. โVictoria, are you afraid of dying?โ
The moment I heard that unlucky word, I shuddered, staring at him in disbelief.
Ryanโs voice dropped to a whisper. โDonโt go outside. Itโs safer here.โ
My breath hitched, and my voice trembled. โI donโt understand what youโre saying.โ
Ryanโs gaze bore into mine. โIโm sorry, I messed things up. Now things between me and Uncle Ryan are getting worse, and Jeffrey Jennings is furious.โ
A chill ran down my spine. I took a few more steps back. โSo, because heโs angry, am I in danger?โ
โI donโt know,โ Ryan admitted, his voice low. โBut a couple days ago, one of Jeffrey Jenningsโs guys got investigated. It didnโt touch my grandfather directly, but that guyโs been with him for over twenty yearsโhe knows a ton of stuff.โ Ryanโs eyes showed a hint of worry.
โSo now Iโm getting dragged into this too?โ I shot back, feeling totally wronged.
โNo,โ Ryan replied quickly, his voice gentler. โIโm just saying, Jeffrey Jennings is furious right now, and Iโm worried he might lash out at you. Plus, Uncle Ryanโs got a mining operation overseas thatโs tangled up in all this, so heโll be busy for a while. He might not be able to watch your back.โ
โRyan, are you punishing me?โ I asked, my anger draining away in an instant. I leaned against the wall, my eyes lowered. โIs this your way of punishing me for what happened between me and Edward?โ
Ryanโs breathing grew heavier, his lips pressed into a thin line, but he didnโt say a word.
โI guess I really let love cloud my judgment,โ I said, looking at Ryan with a bitter smile. โI chose someone I never shouldโve fallen for, and now Iโve boxed myself in.โ
โYou can still choose a better path,โ Ryan said, his eyes dark and unreadable. โIf you took a wrong turn, you can always come back.โ
โCome back just to get back together with you?โ I let out a weak laugh. โRyan, you take love way too seriously. Itโs honestly suffocating, you know?โ
โAll I know isโฆโ Ryanโs eyes turned red, looking like Iโd just shattered his whole world. โI came back to where it all began, but you werenโt there anymore. You couldโve picked anyone, so why did it have to be Uncle Ryan?โ
โโฆโ I swallowed hard, words stuck in my throat. โPeople are strange sometimesโwe ignore whatโs right in front of us, always reaching for the moon instead.โ
Ryanโs body went rigid, a flash of hurt crossing his face. He let out a dry laugh. โSo, what is it about me that you donโt want?โ
โRyan, you were married back then,โ I argued, my voice steady. โIโd already moved on from you. I thought I was free, and Edward and I were both single. Why couldnโt we be together? Youโre not being fair."
โWhy did you have to pick him?โ Ryanโs voice was shaking with emotion. โNathan or Jaredโeither of them wouldโve been fine, theyโre both just waiting for you to love them. But Uncle Ryan? I canโt accept that, not ever.โ
He closed the distance between us in a few quick strides. I tried to step back, but there was nowhere left to goโthe wall was solid behind me, trapping me in place.
Ryan threw his arms out, caging me in against the wall. His eyes were wild, swirling with pain. โWhy? Do you know how shattered I was when I found out? It was like Comet smashing into the earthโlike I was about to die.โ
I stared into his eyes, completely floored. His pupils quivered, barely holding it together. โThat kind of suffocating painโฆ Iโve never felt anything like it in my life.โ
โRyan, do you even hear yourself?โ I shot back, my voice sharp with disbelief. โYou were married at the time.โ I couldnโt believe itโafter all this, Ryan was still hung up on me even after getting married. Honestly, if I were Fiona, Iโd be pissed too.
