Chapter 782
โIt wasnโt you? Thenโฆ who was it?โ I was honestly stunned. Iโd been so sure Edward had helped me out after hearing about Frank getting handsy.
Edwardโs face became unreadable, his expression impossible to read.
โWalk me through everything that happened. Iโll look into it and find out whoโs really got your back,โ he said, his voice dropping a notch.
My heart skipped a beat. โDid I really just thank the wrong guy?โ
I laid it all out for him, and Edwardโs gaze turned icy. โWait, he tried to lay a hand on you?โ
โYeah, but heโs behind bars now. They must have solid evidence against him.โ Just remembering the smug look Frank had that day makes my skin crawl.
โIt was Ryan, wasnโt it?โ Edward didnโt even have to think about itโhe just knew.
I felt a jolt in my chest. โWhy would he help me?โ
Edward replied, his voice calm, โBecause he cares about you. Heโs always looking out for you, and the moment he hears youโre in trouble, he wants to be the first to help.โ
I pressed my hand to my forehead, feeling lost. โIf it really was him, then what am I supposed to do?โ
Edward stared at me, his gaze sharp and urgent. โDid you meet up with him in private?โ
I felt a little guilty, but finally nodded. โYeah, he came to find me outside the office building before.โ
Edwardโs expression turned sour. โWhy didnโt you tell me earlier? I asked if you were having any problems, and you said no. Were you counting on him to bail you out?โ
โEdward, I never expected him to help me. The moment Frank started getting inappropriate, I decided to cut off the partnership,โ I explained right away.
โAnd what about you meeting up with him?โ Edward kept pressing, clearly not ready to drop it.
โHe came looking for me outside the lobby. I had no choice but to get him away from the building. We just chatted for a bit, then I sent him on his way,โ I explained.
โYou know exactly why heโs trying to get close to you. Donโt ever meet him alone again,โ Edward said, his voice turning possessive.
โAlright, but what if he shows up looking for me?โ I glanced up at him. โIs there anything you can do to stop it?โ
Edward frowned, then turned his back to me and stared out the window. โRyanโs gone back to Braylin, so he wonโt be showing up here for a while.โ
โEdward, donโt you trust me?โ I called out softly, watching his back.
His shoulders visibly stiffened. He slowly clenched his hand, then let it go before turning to look at me. โNo, I do trust you.โ
โThen what are you so worried about? Couples should trust each other. Thereโs no need for all this doubt,โ I murmured.
Edward came over and gently pulled me into his arms. โVictoria, I justโฆ feel uneasy.โ
I could feel him trembling a little, so I hugged him back and whispered, โAs long as you trust me, Iโll never betray you.โ
Edward pulled me even closer. โOkay, I was out of line. I shouldnโt have doubted you.โ
โIโm not totally innocent either. I kept some things from you,โ I admitted, feeling a little guilty.
Edward kissed me, and I didnโt move away. Right then, a nervous assistant walked in and saw us together.
We both jumped, and the assistant was practically shaking. โI just wanted to check if Ms. Murphy had left for the dayโฆ Iโm so sorry,โ she stammered.
She spun around and rushed out, and Edward and I quickly let go of each other.
โThese are for you. Would you accept them?โ I asked softly.
Edward reached out and took the gifts. โAlright. So, what did you get me?โ
โJust some useful things. You can open them when you get home,โ I said with a smile.
Edward and I shared a ride back to the office, sitting side by side in silence.
Weโd laid everything out in the office earlier, but now, he barely said a word.
I felt a dull ache in my chest. โTurns out, even the smallest crack can make a relationship feel less complete,โ Victoria thought to herself.
