In that corner, his tall figure blocked my way as he stepped around the table, trapping me against the wall. His eyes were dark, intense, totally overbearing. “Vic, don’t marry him. Please?”
I sucked in a sharp breath, my chest rising and falling with how hard I was breathing. “Who are you to tell me what I can or can’t do?”
“My feelings for you have never changed. I’ve always been trying to get closer to you…” Ryan said, his voice low and intense.
“That’s enough,” I snapped, cutting him off. “I’m not a little kid—don’t try to fool me with your so-called feelings.”
“Believe it or not, I’ve already mapped out our future together. If Edward hadn’t gotten in the way, things would’ve been amazing for us,” Ryan said, his breath coming fast, clearly just as worked up as I was.
“Wake up and face reality. Don’t you care about your future?” His words snapped me back to reality. “Edward said it best–only hold on to what you can truly grasp, only then can you control it. What you have right now just isn’t enough.”
“Is that so?” Ryan narrowed his eyes. “If the day comes when I have enough power, even if you’re already my aunt, I’ll still snatch you away. Is that really what you want to see?”
“Ryan, you’re really sick. You should go take your meds,” I said, shaking my head.
“I’m not sick. I’m perfectly clear about what I want and why I’m fighting for it,” Ryan nearly growled, his voice rough with emotion. “I know this road is tough, but I have no other choice.”
“You should be focusing on your future, not getting distracted by all this. Once you’ve made it to the top, your whole perspective will change. Maybe three or five years from now, you’ll look back and realize you sounded like some reckless kid. By then, you’ll have more women wanting to be with you than you can count,” I said coolly. After finishing, I shoved him aside and walked out.
Ryan turned, dazed, watching me go. I didn’t look back—I just darted straight into the ladies’ room.
I knew Ryan was feeling resentful right now, but that was just because he was still young and hadn’t really lost much yet. He thinks his love is something precious, but that’s only because he hasn’t been through enough.
Honestly, once he’s climbed higher and made it big, he’ll probably look back on today and regret how reckless he was–maybe even laugh at himself for it.
I stayed in the bathroom until it was time to board, then finally came out.
Ryan was already gone, as if that intense showdown between us had never even happened–like it was all just a dream.
I boarded the plane back to Hachester, and as we soared through the sky, I took a moment to reflect on everything that had happened.
After my second chance at life, I divorced Jared. My heart felt like it had a gaping hole in it after that. Then Nathan came along, warming me up like the winter sun, making me think he was the one. But his secrets pushed me right back into the cold. That was when Ryan showed up, full of youthful energy, throwing himself at me. But instead, it turned out to be a shock. He was about to get into an arranged marriage, and it happened so suddenly I didn’t even have time to process it. With feelings that hadn’t even cooled yet, I ran back to Hachester and threw myself into work, just trying to numb everything inside.
During that time, both Jared and Nathan dropped hints, but I just let it go. Honestly, I thought we were better off as just friends.
I always knew where to draw the line when it came to flirting or messing around. After we parted ways, I never reached out or tried to flirt with either of them.
From the very first moment I met Edward, his name seemed to wrap itself around my life, always lingering in the background.
