Chapter 725

Ryan just wouldnโ€™t leave me alone, and it was driving me crazy. If the Chamberlains ever found out Ryan kept coming to see me, theyโ€™d totally think I was some shameless homewrecker. Seriously, I hadnโ€™t done anything, but Iโ€™d have to carry that kind of blame?

โ€˜No way. I canโ€™t accept this,โ€™ I thought, feeling indignant. The only person I could turn to for help right now was Edward.

As soon as I got home, I called him. Edward picked up, and after I finished explaining, his voice grew heavy. โ€œHe really dares to act out like this, huh?โ€

โ€œEdward, can you try to stop him? Iโ€™m really worried about him coming to see me so blatantly,โ€ I said. In my previous life, I put up with a mistress for over thirty yearsโ€”I absolutely refuse to become the homewrecker who ruins someone elseโ€™s family.

Since breaking up with Ryan, I never once reached out to him or kept tabs on his life. Thatโ€™s just basic decency. When youโ€™re together, things can get wild and lively, but once itโ€™s over, you need to vanish without a trace.

โ€˜Why canโ€™t Ryan do the same?โ€™ I thought to myself.

โ€œDonโ€™t stress. Iโ€™ll give him a call. Where are you right now?โ€ Edward asked, sounding concerned.

โ€œI just got home,โ€ I replied.

โ€œYou said earlier a stateโ€“owned enterprise invested in your company? Which one is it? Can you give me some specifics?โ€ Edwardโ€™s voice was low and serious.

โ€œEdward, are you planning to block this deal?โ€ I couldnโ€™t help but feel my stomach drop. If asking him to talk to Ryan ended up blowing up this partnership, what was I supposed to do then?

โ€œDonโ€™t worry, it wonโ€™t affect your deal. I just need some info so I can talk to Ryan,โ€ Edward reassured me.

โ€œAlright,โ€ I replied, having no choice but to trust Edward and gave him the details. After Edward hung up, I had no clue how he was going to talk to Ryan about all this. I just hoped Ryan would keep a cool head and not do anything reckless. It was already past midnight, and I was lying in bed, wide awake because of everything going on with Ryan.

Edward still hadnโ€™t given me a straight answer. โ€˜Did their talk fall apart?โ€™ I wondered. โ€˜Could this whole thing actually make them, uncle and nephew, turn against each other?โ€™ I couldnโ€™t help but worry. I felt like I was right back in the thick of the chaos.

Suddenly, my phone lit up with a text from Edward. I snatched it up and checked it in a hurry. It just said: โ€œOpen the door!โ€

I bolted upright, barely believing itโ€“I dashed to the living room, and when I opened the door, there was Edward, looking dead tired.

โ€œWhy are you here all of a sudden?โ€ I asked, totally shocked.

Edward smiled. โ€œDidnโ€™t I tell you last time that Mariah was coming to the church? Sheโ€™s arriving the day after tomorrow. I justโ€ฆ showed up a little early.โ€

In the quiet darkness of the night, the one whoโ€™d been haunting my thoughts suddenly appeared right in front of me. It was like finally getting rain after a neverโ€“ending drought.

โ€œCome on in. Itโ€™s really late,โ€ I said softly.

โ€œI figured youโ€™d be asleep already,โ€ Edward said, his voice sounding a bit rough.

โ€œCouldnโ€™t sleep,โ€ I said, leaning against the wall. โ€œBeen waiting for you to text me back.โ€

โ€œSo if I hadnโ€™t shown up or messaged you, would you have just stayed up till morning?โ€ Edward let out a quiet laugh.

But I couldnโ€™t bring myself to smile. I turned my back to him, putting some distance between us. โ€œEdward, I feel like Iโ€™m caught up in a dangerous game here.โ€

Edwardโ€™s smile disappeared. He closed the gap between us in a few long strides, lowering his gaze to study my face. โ€œWhy do you say that?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not some kind of superhumanโ€“why did I ever think I could handle getting mixed up with both of you at once? I really overestimated myself,โ€ I said with a selfโ€“deprecating laugh.

โ€œVictoria, Iโ€™m sorry, I never thought Ryan would actually come looking for you,โ€ Edward said, gently gripping my shoulders. โ€œHeโ€™s just got that youthful impulsiveness. But donโ€™t worryโ€“Iโ€™ve already talked to him, and he gets it now. He knows how much trouble showing up like that could cause you.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ My eyes lit up. โ€˜Does Ryan finally get that this is crossing a line?โ€™ I thought.
