Chapter 724
55 vouchers.
I nodded. โItโs really something special when two people end up together. Make sure you treasure it.โ
Melissa glanced at me and let out a quiet sigh. โSorry, Victoria, Iโm still too nervous to bring him to meet you over dinner.โ
I was taken aback, then couldnโt help but laugh. โCome on, you canโt be that shy!โ
โItโs not that Iโm lacking confidenceโitโs just that I know how dangerous you are around men,โ Melissa said, giving my cheek a playful pinch. โSeriously, you walk out without a stitch of makeup and still look like youโve got a filter on. Your skinโs so clear and fair, and you never get pimples! Meanwhile, I eat one spicy meal and my face explodes. Seriously, howโs anyone supposed to compete?โ
Melissa was always a riotโshe even had a way of making compliments sound one-of-a-kind.
โFine, I wonโt meet him yet. But when you get married, Iโll give you a big engagement gift,โ I said with a grin.
โLet me hold onto my sugar mama,โ Melissa joked, clinging to my arm like she wasnโt letting go.
I cracked up at her.
After lunch, we went shopping together, and when we got tired, she treated me to some dessert. Then we headed home separately.
Down in the parking garage, I popped the trunk and started unloading my shopping bags.
Suddenly, the headlights of a black Volkswagen next to me flicked on.
I glanced over, but didnโt pay it much mind. Instead, I strode straight toward the elevator.
Just then, I heard Ryans call out from behind me. โYou still havenโt explained what happened yesterday at lunch.โ
Hearing Ryansโs voice, I whipped around.
He was standing by his car in a black shirt, his expression impossible to read.
โHow did you even find me here?โ I blurted out, totally stunned.
Ryan said coolly, โI just want an explanation.โ
โSorry, I just mistook you for someone else,โ I said, wondering, โWould he actually buy that?โ
Ryan switched off his headlights and strode right up to me. โWas it really just a mix-up, or do you just project his face onto anyone who reminds you of him?โ
โDonโt go off the deep end, Ryan. You really shouldnโt be here,โ I snapped, my anger barely contained.
โIf Uncle Ryan finds out what you did to me yesterdayโฆโ Ryan said, letting the threat hang in the air.
โRyanโฆโ I blurted out, panic and anger mixing in my voice.
But Ryan just gave me that wicked grin. โCome on, you know how manipulative I can be. Itโs not like this is news to you.โ
โEven if you donโt love your wife, couldnโt you at least show her some respect?โ I snapped, my anger flaring.
โI didnโt do anything out of line. I just met up with someone from my past and talked for a bitโฆโ I tried to explain.
Ryanโs eyes grew darker. โYou used to smile at me every time we met, but now you look at me like Iโm your worst enemy. Vic, have I really been replaced by someone new?โ
I took a deep breath, thinking, โIs Ryan really taking this so seriously?โ
โWhat does Uncle Ryan have that I donโt? Why are you so into him?โ Ryan asked, looking genuinely bitter.
โUncle Ryan gets women way better than I doโheโs got way more experience,โ Ryan said, stepping closer with every word.
โRyan, I really donโt want to hear this,โ I said, my voice cold. โAnd honestly, you shouldnโt even be asking me that.โ
โUncle Ryanโs got no moralsโฆโ Ryan scoffed.
โOh, and you do?โ I shot back, raising an eyebrow. โYouโre married, but still chasing after your ex.โ
โIโฆ I had my reasons, things I couldnโt control. I never betrayed you,โ Ryan said, his eyes rimmed red with anguish. โIf it were up to me, Iโd never have let you go.โ
โYou knew you couldnโt control things, but you still came looking for trouble. Ryan, stop saying things that donโt mean anything. Just go back to your own life,โ I said, turning and heading for the elevator.
Ryan stood in the shadows, watching me leave as if I was running away.
