Chapter 724

55 vouchers.

I nodded. โ€œItโ€™s really something special when two people end up together. Make sure you treasure it.โ€

Melissa glanced at me and let out a quiet sigh. โ€œSorry, Victoria, Iโ€™m still too nervous to bring him to meet you over dinner.โ€

I was taken aback, then couldnโ€™t help but laugh. โ€œCome on, you canโ€™t be that shy!โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not that Iโ€™m lacking confidenceโ€“itโ€™s just that I know how dangerous you are around men,โ€ Melissa said, giving my cheek a playful pinch. โ€œSeriously, you walk out without a stitch of makeup and still look like youโ€™ve got a filter on. Your skinโ€™s so clear and fair, and you never get pimples! Meanwhile, I eat one spicy meal and my face explodes. Seriously, howโ€™s anyone supposed to compete?โ€

Melissa was always a riotโ€“she even had a way of making compliments sound one-of-a-kind.

โ€œFine, I wonโ€™t meet him yet. But when you get married, Iโ€™ll give you a big engagement gift,โ€ I said with a grin.

โ€œLet me hold onto my sugar mama,โ€ Melissa joked, clinging to my arm like she wasnโ€™t letting go.

I cracked up at her.

After lunch, we went shopping together, and when we got tired, she treated me to some dessert. Then we headed home separately.

Down in the parking garage, I popped the trunk and started unloading my shopping bags.

Suddenly, the headlights of a black Volkswagen next to me flicked on.

I glanced over, but didnโ€™t pay it much mind. Instead, I strode straight toward the elevator.

Just then, I heard Ryans call out from behind me. โ€œYou still havenโ€™t explained what happened yesterday at lunch.โ€

Hearing Ryansโ€™s voice, I whipped around.

He was standing by his car in a black shirt, his expression impossible to read.

โ€œHow did you even find me here?โ€ I blurted out, totally stunned.

Ryan said coolly, โ€œI just want an explanation.โ€

โ€œSorry, I just mistook you for someone else,โ€ I said, wondering, โ€˜Would he actually buy that?โ€™

Ryan switched off his headlights and strode right up to me. โ€œWas it really just a mix-up, or do you just project his face onto anyone who reminds you of him?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t go off the deep end, Ryan. You really shouldnโ€™t be here,โ€ I snapped, my anger barely contained.

โ€œIf Uncle Ryan finds out what you did to me yesterdayโ€ฆโ€ Ryan said, letting the threat hang in the air.

โ€œRyanโ€ฆโ€ I blurted out, panic and anger mixing in my voice.

But Ryan just gave me that wicked grin. โ€œCome on, you know how manipulative I can be. Itโ€™s not like this is news to you.โ€

โ€œEven if you donโ€™t love your wife, couldnโ€™t you at least show her some respect?โ€ I snapped, my anger flaring.

โ€œI didnโ€™t do anything out of line. I just met up with someone from my past and talked for a bitโ€ฆโ€ I tried to explain.

Ryanโ€™s eyes grew darker. โ€œYou used to smile at me every time we met, but now you look at me like Iโ€™m your worst enemy. Vic, have I really been replaced by someone new?โ€

I took a deep breath, thinking, โ€˜Is Ryan really taking this so seriously?โ€™

โ€œWhat does Uncle Ryan have that I donโ€™t? Why are you so into him?โ€ Ryan asked, looking genuinely bitter.

โ€œUncle Ryan gets women way better than I doโ€“heโ€™s got way more experience,โ€ Ryan said, stepping closer with every word.

โ€œRyan, I really donโ€™t want to hear this,โ€ I said, my voice cold. โ€œAnd honestly, you shouldnโ€™t even be asking me that.โ€

โ€œUncle Ryanโ€™s got no moralsโ€ฆโ€ Ryan scoffed.

โ€œOh, and you do?โ€ I shot back, raising an eyebrow. โ€œYouโ€™re married, but still chasing after your ex.โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆ I had my reasons, things I couldnโ€™t control. I never betrayed you,โ€ Ryan said, his eyes rimmed red with anguish. โ€œIf it were up to me, Iโ€™d never have let you go.โ€

โ€œYou knew you couldnโ€™t control things, but you still came looking for trouble. Ryan, stop saying things that donโ€™t mean anything. Just go back to your own life,โ€ I said, turning and heading for the elevator.

Ryan stood in the shadows, watching me leave as if I was running away.
