Chapter 672
โPeople from those powerful families arenโt exactly known for their morals. If you really join the Jennings family, Ryan will definitely be secretly eyeing youโฆโ
โIโm not some irresistible woman. Iโm not that special,โ I said coldly. โI only care about the person whoโs with me now. Everyone else? Theyโre just passing through my life.โ
โVictoria, youโre way too naiveโฆโ Jaredโs eyes were dark as he stared at me. โMen are all about conquest. Donโt underestimate how far theyโll go just to get what they want.โ
I couldnโt help feeling bitter. โSo, in your eyes, women are just trophies, just tools for your pleasureโno dignity, no say in anything?โ
Jared was stunned, clearly not expecting me to get it right away.
I arched an eyebrow. โThanks for the heads-up. You know, sometimes I think staying free is actually simple. When fate tries to tie you up, donโt just sit there and pray for mercy. Then it canโt hold you.โ
Jared blinked.
โYou think Iโm with Edward because Iโm looking for a place to belong? Nope. Iโm just here for the journey,โ I said, squatting down and resting my chin in my hand as I looked at him. โYou told Yvonne I want to be free like the wind. Thanks for telling her that.โ
Jared gazed at me, lost in thought. Suddenly, he reached out as if to grab me, but I was too far away. โVictoria, youโre reckless and untamed now. Thereโs no way I can hold onto you anymore.โ
I sat by the door, hugging my knees, my face pressed against them. โJared, Iโve figured it out. You donโt have to get married to live a great life. Sure, if you meet someone you truly love, go for itโbut always keep a backup plan for yourself. When you know youโve got a way out, you wonโt feel trapped inside.โ
โLet me be your backup plan, okay?โ Jared suddenly got up and crouched down beside me. โI want to be your safety net.โ
I stared at him, surprised. โSorry, but my backup plan isnโt a person. Itโs moneyโcold hard cash thatโll never stab me in the back.โ
Jared just stared at me, lost for words.
I shot him a small smile. โLooks like youโre fine now, so get some sleep, okay?โ
With that, I got up and headed back to my room.
But just as I was about to leave, Jared suddenly pulled me into a tight embrace from behind, holding me close. โDid youโฆ sleep with him?โ
โThatโs my private business. Donโt ask,โ I said, starting to pry his fingers off me.
โIf youโre willing to sleep with anyone, why not meโฆโ Jared growled in my ear, almost losing control. โMy moneyโone day, itโll all be yours and Yvonneโs.โ
I knew Jared was just talking nonsense because he was drunk.
As he pressed his lips to my ear, I pried his fingers off and pushed him away. โJared, if youโre that desperate, I can call a girl for you.โ
Jared just stood there, leaning against the wall, looking lost. โDonโt think I canโt do it. Just watch, Iโll marry someone the moment Iโm back homeโฆโ
โCongrats,โ I tossed over my shoulder, shutting the door behind me.
The next day, I didnโt have any classes, and Jared was still at the hotel, catching up on sleep.
So I took Yvonne out for some shopping and snacks, just enjoying some quality time together.
Yvonne had gotten so much taller, so I picked out some new clothes for her.
When we got back to the hotel, Jared was still zoned out, sprawled on the couch and totally out of it.
โDad, are you okay? Youโre not sick, right?โ Yvonne asked, reaching out to check his forehead. โLooks like youโre not running a fever.โ
Jared croaked, โDid you have fun today?โ
โYeah! Mom bought me a bunch of stuff and took me to eat all kinds of yummy food,โ Yvonne replied, her face lighting up.
Jared looked at me and suddenly couldnโt help but laugh out loud.
I had no idea what he was laughing about.
โSo, how does it feel to be taking charge of your daughterโs fate again?โ Jared asked, still grinning at me.
I shot him a glare. โWhy does he always have to bring up stuff that hurts me?โ
Back in my previous life, if he hadnโt let things slide, our daughter wouldnโt have had her values warped by Tracy, and she never wouldโve ended up in prison.
In this life, we should all own up to our mistakes and actually do something to fix them.
Yvonne looked at us, puzzled. โDad, Mom, why are you talking so weird? I donโt understand at all.โ
Jared ruffled her hair. โGo play in your room, sweetie.โ
I was thinking of heading back to my apartment for a bitโI needed a shower, and I didnโt have any of my clothes here.
As I was about to leave, Jared said in an icy tone, โElaineโs fired.โ
I spun around, startled. โWhy are you doing this?โ
โShe failed at her job,โ Jared scoffed. โShe knew what was going on and kept quiet. That makes it even worse.โ
I shot back, โI kept her completely in the dark. You have no idea what really happened, so donโt pin this on her.โ
โSomeoneโs got to take the fall for this,โ Jared said coldly. โSheโs the obvious choice.โ
โJared, donโt do this. Itโs all on me. Iโll resign as soon as Iโm backโI donโt want Elaine to get dragged into this. She doesnโt deserve it.โ
Jaredโs face hardened at my words. โFine, Iโll let her off this time.โ
I knew he was just trying to get a rise out of me, so I turned and walked out.
When I got to the lobby, my phone rangโit was Edward. โHow about dinner tonight?โ
