Chapter 672

โ€œPeople from those powerful families arenโ€™t exactly known for their morals. If you really join the Jennings family, Ryan will definitely be secretly eyeing youโ€ฆโ€

โ€œIโ€™m not some irresistible woman. Iโ€™m not that special,โ€ I said coldly. โ€œI only care about the person whoโ€™s with me now. Everyone else? Theyโ€™re just passing through my life.โ€

โ€œVictoria, youโ€™re way too naiveโ€ฆโ€ Jaredโ€™s eyes were dark as he stared at me. โ€œMen are all about conquest. Donโ€™t underestimate how far theyโ€™ll go just to get what they want.โ€

I couldnโ€™t help feeling bitter. โ€œSo, in your eyes, women are just trophies, just tools for your pleasureโ€”no dignity, no say in anything?โ€

Jared was stunned, clearly not expecting me to get it right away.

I arched an eyebrow. โ€œThanks for the heads-up. You know, sometimes I think staying free is actually simple. When fate tries to tie you up, donโ€™t just sit there and pray for mercy. Then it canโ€™t hold you.โ€

Jared blinked.

โ€œYou think Iโ€™m with Edward because Iโ€™m looking for a place to belong? Nope. Iโ€™m just here for the journey,โ€ I said, squatting down and resting my chin in my hand as I looked at him. โ€œYou told Yvonne I want to be free like the wind. Thanks for telling her that.โ€

Jared gazed at me, lost in thought. Suddenly, he reached out as if to grab me, but I was too far away. โ€œVictoria, youโ€™re reckless and untamed now. Thereโ€™s no way I can hold onto you anymore.โ€

I sat by the door, hugging my knees, my face pressed against them. โ€œJared, Iโ€™ve figured it out. You donโ€™t have to get married to live a great life. Sure, if you meet someone you truly love, go for itโ€”but always keep a backup plan for yourself. When you know youโ€™ve got a way out, you wonโ€™t feel trapped inside.โ€

โ€œLet me be your backup plan, okay?โ€ Jared suddenly got up and crouched down beside me. โ€œI want to be your safety net.โ€

I stared at him, surprised. โ€œSorry, but my backup plan isnโ€™t a person. Itโ€™s moneyโ€”cold hard cash thatโ€™ll never stab me in the back.โ€

Jared just stared at me, lost for words.

I shot him a small smile. โ€œLooks like youโ€™re fine now, so get some sleep, okay?โ€

With that, I got up and headed back to my room.

But just as I was about to leave, Jared suddenly pulled me into a tight embrace from behind, holding me close. โ€œDid youโ€ฆ sleep with him?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s my private business. Donโ€™t ask,โ€ I said, starting to pry his fingers off me.

โ€œIf youโ€™re willing to sleep with anyone, why not meโ€ฆโ€ Jared growled in my ear, almost losing control. โ€œMy moneyโ€”one day, itโ€™ll all be yours and Yvonneโ€™s.โ€

I knew Jared was just talking nonsense because he was drunk.

As he pressed his lips to my ear, I pried his fingers off and pushed him away. โ€œJared, if youโ€™re that desperate, I can call a girl for you.โ€

Jared just stood there, leaning against the wall, looking lost. โ€œDonโ€™t think I canโ€™t do it. Just watch, Iโ€™ll marry someone the moment Iโ€™m back homeโ€ฆโ€

โ€œCongrats,โ€ I tossed over my shoulder, shutting the door behind me.

The next day, I didnโ€™t have any classes, and Jared was still at the hotel, catching up on sleep.

So I took Yvonne out for some shopping and snacks, just enjoying some quality time together.

Yvonne had gotten so much taller, so I picked out some new clothes for her.

When we got back to the hotel, Jared was still zoned out, sprawled on the couch and totally out of it.

โ€œDad, are you okay? Youโ€™re not sick, right?โ€ Yvonne asked, reaching out to check his forehead. โ€œLooks like youโ€™re not running a fever.โ€

Jared croaked, โ€œDid you have fun today?โ€

โ€œYeah! Mom bought me a bunch of stuff and took me to eat all kinds of yummy food,โ€ Yvonne replied, her face lighting up.

Jared looked at me and suddenly couldnโ€™t help but laugh out loud.

I had no idea what he was laughing about.

โ€œSo, how does it feel to be taking charge of your daughterโ€™s fate again?โ€ Jared asked, still grinning at me.

I shot him a glare. โ€˜Why does he always have to bring up stuff that hurts me?โ€™

Back in my previous life, if he hadnโ€™t let things slide, our daughter wouldnโ€™t have had her values warped by Tracy, and she never wouldโ€™ve ended up in prison.

In this life, we should all own up to our mistakes and actually do something to fix them.

Yvonne looked at us, puzzled. โ€œDad, Mom, why are you talking so weird? I donโ€™t understand at all.โ€

Jared ruffled her hair. โ€œGo play in your room, sweetie.โ€

I was thinking of heading back to my apartment for a bitโ€”I needed a shower, and I didnโ€™t have any of my clothes here.

As I was about to leave, Jared said in an icy tone, โ€œElaineโ€™s fired.โ€

I spun around, startled. โ€œWhy are you doing this?โ€

โ€œShe failed at her job,โ€ Jared scoffed. โ€œShe knew what was going on and kept quiet. That makes it even worse.โ€

I shot back, โ€œI kept her completely in the dark. You have no idea what really happened, so donโ€™t pin this on her.โ€

โ€œSomeoneโ€™s got to take the fall for this,โ€ Jared said coldly. โ€œSheโ€™s the obvious choice.โ€

โ€œJared, donโ€™t do this. Itโ€™s all on me. Iโ€™ll resign as soon as Iโ€™m backโ€”I donโ€™t want Elaine to get dragged into this. She doesnโ€™t deserve it.โ€

Jaredโ€™s face hardened at my words. โ€œFine, Iโ€™ll let her off this time.โ€

I knew he was just trying to get a rise out of me, so I turned and walked out.

When I got to the lobby, my phone rangโ€”it was Edward. โ€œHow about dinner tonight?โ€

Please let us know if you find any errors, so we can fix them.
