Chapter 635
Just then, the car door swung open, and the person who stepped out caught me off guard.
โNathanโฆโ I said, surprised as I walked over.
Nathan was wearing a black overcoat and holding a bouquet of roses. When he saw me coming, he handed the flowers to me. โMr. Holcomb gave me your address. Iโm here for a tech conference.โ
I paused for a couple of seconds, staring at the roses before reaching out to take them. โThanks. But if youโre here for a conference, how did you manage to find time to see me?โ
Nathan smiled, his eyes twinkling. โWhat if I told you I came to the conference because youโre in the UK?โ
I smiled softly. โDid you really come all this way just for me?โ
โHowโs life treating you here? Looks like youโve lost some weight,โ Nathan said, giving me a quick once-over.
I used to have a fuller figure, and while Iโd slimmed down a bit, at least it wasnโt in any of the important placesโjust my waist had gotten a little smaller.
โI just canโt get used to the food here,โ I said with a wry smile.
โCome on, letโs go. Tonight, Iโll take you out for something youโll actually enjoy,โ Nathan said, opening the car door.
I slid into the car, and Nathan got in right after me.
โDid you actually have your car flown over here?โ I asked, half-joking.
Nathan chuckled. โNah, my company has a tech partnership with Mercedes-Benz. They hooked me up with this as a loaner.โ
โOh!โ I thought to myself, โWow, life really is just a breeze for the big shots.โ
Nathan folded his hands, looking more mature and steady than the man I first met. He really seemed different now.
Noticing me staring, he actually looked a little bashful and scooted a bit closer. โWhy are you looking at me like that?โ he asked.
I quickly sat up straighter and gave an awkward chuckle, โI just noticed you donโt have as many gray hairs as before.โ
Nathan just laughed it off. โReally? Well, thatโs a good thing. Makes me look less old.โ
โYouโre not old,โ I said. โAnd youโre back to wearing glasses again.โ
Nathan nodded. โYeah, my vision isnโt great at night, so I wear them then.โ
โYou look really good in glasses. Very refined,โ I said, trying to keep the conversation going.
โRefined scoundrel, huh?โ Nathan joked, poking fun at himself.
โNot you. Thatโs totally Jared,โ I said, teasing him.
Nathan burst out laughing, clearly enjoying himself. โMr. Holcomb would be pretty upset if he heard that.โ
โThen letโs keep it between us,โ I said casually.
Nathan nodded. โWhen I asked Mr. Holcomb for your address, he was pretty hesitant at first.โ
โHeโs just stubborn like that,โ I replied.
But Nathan saw it differently. โVictoria, things between you and Mr. Holcomb seem kind of complicated. Have you ever thought about getting back together with him for Yvonneโs well-being?โ
โNot really,โ I answered without a second thought. โHeโs got his own baggage to deal with.โ
In his last life, he said he owed his daughter a proper upbringing. So this time around, Jared should do his best to raise her well.
โReally?โ Nathan adjusted his glasses, his eyes shining behind the lenses. โSo youโre not considering marriage at all?โ
I was caught off guard. โWhy is Nathan getting all sentimental tonight?โ I wondered.
โNot anymore,โ I shook my head. โI just want to live well on my own.โ
Nathan let out a gentle sigh. โYou donโt have to get married, Victoria, but you canโt just give up on love. Everyone needs someone to share their life with.โ
I could tell what Nathan was getting at.
Smiling, I looked at him. โPeopleโs hearts change so easily. The more time you spend with someone, the more you start to rely on them. Getting emotionally attached can really mess you up, so Iโm just not ready for that yet."
Nathan gave me a helpless look, then said with a bitter smile, โAlright, if youโre not looking for anyone, then Iโll just stay by your side as a friend.โ
โNathan, how many times do I have to say this? Donโt do this to yourself,โ I said, not wanting to owe him anything emotionally.
โVictoria, no matter how many times you say it, my answerโs still the same,โ Nathan replied, even more stubborn than me.
โDonโt you want to get married?โ I asked, a little taken aback.
