Chapter 635

Just then, the car door swung open, and the person who stepped out caught me off guard.

โ€œNathanโ€ฆโ€ I said, surprised as I walked over.

Nathan was wearing a black overcoat and holding a bouquet of roses. When he saw me coming, he handed the flowers to me. โ€œMr. Holcomb gave me your address. Iโ€™m here for a tech conference.โ€

I paused for a couple of seconds, staring at the roses before reaching out to take them. โ€œThanks. But if youโ€™re here for a conference, how did you manage to find time to see me?โ€

Nathan smiled, his eyes twinkling. โ€œWhat if I told you I came to the conference because youโ€™re in the UK?โ€

I smiled softly. โ€œDid you really come all this way just for me?โ€

โ€œHowโ€™s life treating you here? Looks like youโ€™ve lost some weight,โ€ Nathan said, giving me a quick once-over.

I used to have a fuller figure, and while Iโ€™d slimmed down a bit, at least it wasnโ€™t in any of the important placesโ€”just my waist had gotten a little smaller.

โ€œI just canโ€™t get used to the food here,โ€ I said with a wry smile.

โ€œCome on, letโ€™s go. Tonight, Iโ€™ll take you out for something youโ€™ll actually enjoy,โ€ Nathan said, opening the car door.

I slid into the car, and Nathan got in right after me.

โ€œDid you actually have your car flown over here?โ€ I asked, half-joking.

Nathan chuckled. โ€œNah, my company has a tech partnership with Mercedes-Benz. They hooked me up with this as a loaner.โ€

โ€œOh!โ€ I thought to myself, โ€˜Wow, life really is just a breeze for the big shots.โ€™

Nathan folded his hands, looking more mature and steady than the man I first met. He really seemed different now.

Noticing me staring, he actually looked a little bashful and scooted a bit closer. โ€œWhy are you looking at me like that?โ€ he asked.

I quickly sat up straighter and gave an awkward chuckle, โ€œI just noticed you donโ€™t have as many gray hairs as before.โ€

Nathan just laughed it off. โ€œReally? Well, thatโ€™s a good thing. Makes me look less old.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not old,โ€ I said. โ€œAnd youโ€™re back to wearing glasses again.โ€

Nathan nodded. โ€œYeah, my vision isnโ€™t great at night, so I wear them then.โ€

โ€œYou look really good in glasses. Very refined,โ€ I said, trying to keep the conversation going.

โ€œRefined scoundrel, huh?โ€ Nathan joked, poking fun at himself.

โ€œNot you. Thatโ€™s totally Jared,โ€ I said, teasing him.

Nathan burst out laughing, clearly enjoying himself. โ€œMr. Holcomb would be pretty upset if he heard that.โ€

โ€œThen letโ€™s keep it between us,โ€ I said casually.

Nathan nodded. โ€œWhen I asked Mr. Holcomb for your address, he was pretty hesitant at first.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s just stubborn like that,โ€ I replied.

But Nathan saw it differently. โ€œVictoria, things between you and Mr. Holcomb seem kind of complicated. Have you ever thought about getting back together with him for Yvonneโ€™s well-being?โ€

โ€œNot really,โ€ I answered without a second thought. โ€œHeโ€™s got his own baggage to deal with.โ€

In his last life, he said he owed his daughter a proper upbringing. So this time around, Jared should do his best to raise her well.

โ€œReally?โ€ Nathan adjusted his glasses, his eyes shining behind the lenses. โ€œSo youโ€™re not considering marriage at all?โ€

I was caught off guard. โ€˜Why is Nathan getting all sentimental tonight?โ€™ I wondered.

โ€œNot anymore,โ€ I shook my head. โ€œI just want to live well on my own.โ€

Nathan let out a gentle sigh. โ€œYou donโ€™t have to get married, Victoria, but you canโ€™t just give up on love. Everyone needs someone to share their life with.โ€

I could tell what Nathan was getting at.

Smiling, I looked at him. โ€œPeopleโ€™s hearts change so easily. The more time you spend with someone, the more you start to rely on them. Getting emotionally attached can really mess you up, so Iโ€™m just not ready for that yet."

Nathan gave me a helpless look, then said with a bitter smile, โ€œAlright, if youโ€™re not looking for anyone, then Iโ€™ll just stay by your side as a friend.โ€

โ€œNathan, how many times do I have to say this? Donโ€™t do this to yourself,โ€ I said, not wanting to owe him anything emotionally.

โ€œVictoria, no matter how many times you say it, my answerโ€™s still the same,โ€ Nathan replied, even more stubborn than me.

โ€œDonโ€™t you want to get married?โ€ I asked, a little taken aback.
