Why was he asking her this? Lily bit her lip, nodded quickly, and turned away. Her reaction was enough for Alexander; he needed no further explanation. He rose to get another bath towel, wrapping it securely around Lily before pulling a blanket over her.

His gesture surprised her, and she looked up at him. Seeing her gaze, he bent and kissed her forehead. He was stopped by Lily taking his hand. She raised her head, her voice husky: "What's the meaning of this?"

Alexander looked at her small hand firmly gripping his. It made him feel needed.

"Why?" Lily asked, confused. "There's no need to rush. I'll wait until you're ready." Alexander raised his other hand and stroked her head gently.

He had assumed Lily was experienced after her years with Nathaniel. This incident proved him wrong. He hadn't expected her innocence, a fact that pleasantly surprised him.

Alexander wasn't old-fashioned. He didn't care if she was a virgin, but he was mindful of her feelings. She was clearly unprepared and nervous about taking their relationship further. Insisting would only hurt her.

He cherished their love and didn't want to destroy it with his impatience. Beautiful things should be savored, revealed at the perfect moment.

Sadly, Lily misunderstood. His previous question had surprised her; she thought he was curious about being her first. Grabbing his hands, she answered determinedly, "I'm ready!" Her voice was firm, but her eyes betrayed her terror and anxiety. Alexander smiled ruefully, sitting beside her. He pulled her into his embrace, gently lifting her chin so their eyes met. "Do you love me?" he asked, gazing deeply into her eyes. Lily hesitated. The question had caught her off guard.
