Chapter 901
Just as Nathaniel happily prepared for the meeting, his flustered assistant rushed in. "Mr. Hall, bad news!"
Thinking she had jinxed him, Nathaniel stiffened. "What bad news? How could there be bad news with me around?"
The assistant, breathless, stammered, "N-No, sir, it's Mr. Tannerโฆ heโฆ"
Nathaniel frowned. "Which Mr. Tanner are you talking about?"
"Mr. Tanner, the general manager!" she exclaimed, stomping her foot. "Joseph Tanner!"
Nathaniel remained unperturbed. What could that old fool do? he thought. He sipped his coffee, saying slowly, "Oh, him! Didn't I tell you he's stepping down soon? What's the matter?"
"Heโฆ jumped off a building!"
Nathaniel didn't go to the hospital; the police came for him instead. He hadn't anticipated Joseph resorting to this to attract their attention. He'd assumed a tracking device on Joseph's phone would suffice. He'd underestimated the man.
Joseph, while not intending suicide, had indeed used the jump to lure the police, allowing Damian to approach them unimpeded. However, jumping from a building is inherently risky; injury was unavoidable. Despite careful planning, Joseph suffered a lumbar spine injury, leaving him wheelchair-bound.
Terrified as he prepared to jump, Joseph gritted his teeth, the thought of losing Tanner Corporation spurring him on. He closed his eyes and leaped. The police arrived, as planned.
Nathaniel, however, denied everything. Damian lacked concrete proof of his kidnapping; no witnesses, no evidence, no precise location. His account was one-sided, easily dismissed as slander. With a team of lawyers, convicting Nathaniel proved impossible.
Nathaniel felt a smug satisfaction. He'd endured slander and harassment; now, he could simply sit back and let his lawyers handle it. That's why it's good to be rich, he mused. We can solve anything.
Deciding he'd spent enough time at the station, Nathaniel smiled. "Officer, may I leave now? I trust you'll conduct a thorough investigation into this slander and defamation."
