Chapter 805

Elizabeth was displeased by Josephโ€™s words, believing he was protecting Eloise.

โ€œHow is that impossible? Youโ€™re training Damian to be the companyโ€™s successor. She could be jealous, hold a grudge against Damian, and be plotting something to destroy us! She and that model are in the same industry. Donโ€™t forget that!โ€

The more Elizabeth explained, the more convinced she became of her assumptions. She pulled Damian into her arms and began to wail.

โ€œWeโ€™re so miserable! My son is finally going to succeed, but someone is trying to stop him!โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s enough. Stop overthinking! Eloise is not that kind of person!โ€ Joseph rebuked, then continued, โ€œSheโ€™s concerned about the bigger picture. This isnโ€™t just about jealousy; it involves Tanner Corporation. What would she gain by destroying the company? Do you think sheโ€™s that dumb?โ€

Elizabeth was stunned by his outburst, while Damian tugged at her shirt.

โ€œMom, I donโ€™t think itโ€™s Eloise. Itโ€™s probably a business competitor. Iโ€™m inexperienced; the company should blame me. Iโ€™ll take responsibility.โ€ Initially flustered, Damian regained his composure. He knew he should be accountable.

He agreed with his mother, but Joseph clearly didnโ€™t believe them, so arguing was pointless. Seeing this, Joseph nodded. โ€œThe most important thing is not finding fault, but settling the issue.โ€

โ€œThenโ€ฆwhat should we do?โ€ Elizabeth had no business experience to handle this crisis. After graduating, sheโ€™d worked in sales, then married Joseph and quit her job. She wasnโ€™t entirely isolated, as Joseph wasn't always home, giving her time for shopping and watching the news. Otherwise, she'd be oblivious to world events.

โ€œLet me think. Damian, stay home and avoid the public eye for the next few weeks. If the company needs you to make a public statement, be unassertive, give in, and apologize. Understand?โ€

Damian nodded. โ€œYeah, I got it, Dad.โ€

โ€œOkay. Iโ€™ll leave now.โ€ Joseph stood, exhausted.

โ€œArenโ€™t you staying for dinner?โ€ Elizabeth asked hastily. โ€œWhy donโ€™t you stay tonight?โ€

โ€œDo I look like Iโ€™m in the mood? This is urgent. Do you think I can wait?โ€

Joseph glared at her. For the first time in years, he felt she didnโ€™t understand him.

โ€œYou donโ€™t understand anything!โ€

โ€œHey!โ€ Elizabeth retorted, surprised by his scorn. Heโ€™d already left.

โ€œYeah! I know nothing! You understand everything! Iโ€™ve sacrificed everything and stayed by your side! Are you unhappy with me now? Why didnโ€™t you feel that way before?โ€ Elizabeth stamped her foot, but remembered his earlier warning and didnโ€™t chase after him.

โ€œMom, donโ€™t be mad. Dadโ€™s just anxious,โ€ Damian comforted her.

โ€œIs he the only one anxious? Am I not? Does he think heโ€™s the only one who cares about you? I care too!โ€ Elizabeth rolled her eyes. โ€œYou two are teaming up to annoy me!โ€

Damian was speechless.

Derrick was admitted to a private hospital, which offered a better environment than a public hospital, albeit at a higher cost. Situated on a hillside, it was quiet and serene. Birds sang in the mornings. It felt like a peaceful paradise, a far cry from the chaos outside.
