Chapter 715
Lily smiled. "It was just a cover-up."
Alexander asked, confused, "A cover-up?"
Lily explained, "It was easy. We'd been discussing unstable scented candle ingredients. That day, I just said that to confuse Henry. I didn't actually create anything stable enough for perfumes or candles."
Alexander finally understood. "So, the presence or absence of that substance didn't matter?"
Lily nodded. "I didn't put it in the perfume. I added a sleep-inducing medicine to their tea. I timed it perfectly and used a sleep-inducing perfume on myself. Henry was already panicking; I just gave him a nudge. Even if I'd done nothing, he'd have felt sleepy."
Lily's success stemmed partly from Henry's guilt and ignorance of perfume formulas. He wanted to frame Lily or Justin to become head of the family. He therefore believed Lily had added a hallucinogen to her perfume.
"Wow, so that's the whole story," Alexander said, finally understanding.
"How could you fool me?" he asked, still bewildered by the events of that day. Even knowing it wasn't true, he remained confused about how Henry had ingested the medicine and displayed symptoms. But after Lily's explanation, it was simple. Humans are easily deceived by appearances.
Lily put her arms around Alexander's neck. "Because you weren't there to see through my act," she remarked. She was right; Alexander was intelligent and observant. He would have seen through it given time. But no one suspected a cover-up, allowing Lily to deceive Henry. Alexander pinched her chin lightly.
"Does this mean I have to be careful? What if you poison me someday?"
Lily laughed. "Of course! Treat me well, keep me happy, or elseโฆ"
"Or else what?" Alexander rested his forehead against hers, caressing her lips. They looked increasingly appetizing.
Lily playfully blinked. "You'll find out."
"That'll never happen!" Alexander declared, kissing her. He would love her for life to prevent such a scenario.
Freezing the credit card wasn't a long-term solution; it would eventually be usable again. Eloise knew her husband would prioritize his mistress. She only wanted to inconvenience Elizabeth.
After shopping, Eloise and Arianna returned home to a disgruntled Joseph. His face darkened at the sight of their shopping bags.
"Didn't you say you lost your wallet? How could you buy so much?" he demanded, his tone accusatory.
Eloise sighed, handing her bags to the housekeepers. "I had the bank freeze our cards. They informed me of a large unauthorized purchase. A thief, perhaps?" she said, massaging her shoulders. "Luckily, Arianna was with me. I used her card."
