Listen to this chapter:

Lily hesitated only a moment before sprinting toward the street. Despite unanswered questions and Nick still inside, further delay risked recapture. Ross remained, gun drawn, deterring any pursuit.

"Seize her!" someone yelled, attempting to pass him. Ross swiftly pressed the gun to his temple. "Don't come closer, or I'll kill myself!" His agitation was evident in the bulging veins of his neck. As the others hesitated, Ross glanced back, relieved to see Lily far ahead.

Two days of reflection had led him to this decision: he would stop his mother. The experiment's continuation, regardless of success or failure, meant unending chaos.

Lily ran with all her strength, knowing safety lay in reaching a crowded area. Exiting the embassy had already provided a measure of security; the daytime setting deterred open abduction in public.

Rounding a corner, a car nearly struck her. She scrambled aside as it screeched to a halt, panting and using the car's hood for support.

Before she could compose herself, the window lowered, revealing a familiar face. "Lily?!"

Dominic, believing he hallucinated, rubbed his eyes.

"Old man?!" Lily exclaimed, surprised.

Short of breath, Dominic gestured to the back seat. "Get in!"

Lily complied, and Dominic's chauffeur executed a U-turn before speeding away. Inside, Lily sighed with relief, the experience feeling surreal. Dominic offered tissues. "How'd you escape?"

Alexander and the others had attempted a rescue, but she'd refused, intent on stopping the experiment. Dominic wondered if she'd changed her mind or succeeded in her plan.

"It's a long story." Lily, wiping her face, finally registered her perspiration. Dominic's presence brought a wave of exhaustion and fear.

"Tell us later." The old man leaned forward. "Step on it!"

Though ostensibly safe outside, he deemed a swift return to Alexander's house prudent. The car sped through the streets, soon arriving at its destination.
