"Then why are you here? To laugh in my face?" Fabian let go of the bars and slid to the floor, his expression depressed. "I don't know what I've done wrong."
Cameron felt conflicted. He loved his wife and tolerated Fabian for her sake. Despite Fabian's past misdeeds, Cameron had always tried to help him. He had never, however, misused his influence, knowing the potential consequences for both of them. This time, however, Fabian's fate was out of his hands.
Fabian had gotten what he wanted because Cameron had been under Rhea's control. Later, Rhea had secretly conducted illegal experiments at the base while Fabian had attempted to solicit bribes and kickbacks related to the project. Fabian was ill-suited for business; he lacked vision and composure. Cameron knew Alexander could easily bankrupt Fabian's company if he chose to. Yet, because Alexander didn't want to monopolize the market, he'd let Fabian steal the contract.
"You shouldn't have gotten the project in the first place," Cameron said flatly. "Currently, your involvement is limited to financial misconduct, which isn't excessively serious. We'll determine your responsibility for the experiments at the research center later."
Cameron sighed sadly.
Fabian was confused. "What the hell are you talking about?! You gave me the project, and I followed all the legal procedures. What are you holding me accountable for?"
He turned to Cameron, frowning. After a moment, comprehension dawned. "Alexander Russell must have sought your help, didn't he? Are you doing this because he bribed you? Ron, I'm your brother-in-law! You promised my sister you'd take care of me. Is this how you do it?" he growled, as if accusing Cameron of the crime.
Cameron retorted, "Leave your sister out of this and grow up! Do you honestly think I'd misuse my power for personal gain?"
Fabian was stunned. He knew Cameron's character. Had Cameron accepted bribes or abused his power, Fabian wouldn't have been arrested. Cameron had never shown favoritism to Fabian, or anyone else.
However, Fabian couldn't ignore the preferential treatment Cameron had shown Alexander. He took a breath and said through gritted teeth, "Then what's with the base? What are you holding me accountable for? Explain it to me!" He leaned closer, pointing to his ear. He felt certain he'd done nothing wrong.
Cameron shook his head, looking intensely at Fabian. "If you want to know, you should ask Rhea."
"Rhea?" Fabian froze, then a thought struck him. "You know she's dead, and you tell me to ask her? Are you saying you're going to kill me?"
