After Lily changed, she went outside and found Rick waiting. He clearly wasn't worried she'd escape; her advanced pregnancy made that difficult.
Still, Lily rolled her eyes and sighed. "What a bummer! I thought I could get away."
"Come with me!" Rick didn't want to waste time and turned to lead the way. Lily followed, peering at the box in his hand. "Why are you so sure it'll work today? What if it doesn't? Are you going to kill me?"
Rick remained silent, his pace unwavering.
Lily pouted. "Aren't we going to see the higher-ups? Who are they? How do you usually communicate with them? I don't see any communication devices." She licked her lips. "Are you silent because you fear revealing a secret, or is someone watching? Is there a listening device somewhere? If the product fails..."
Rick stopped, turned, and looked at her coldly. "Don't try to provoke me."
"I'm not!" Lily said innocently.
Rick looked intently at her, then at the box, and said calmly, "I'm just following orders. Your questions are irrelevant."
Lily watched him walk away. She shrugged. "You can at least tell me where we're going, can't you?"
"I have no idea," Rick answered.
Lily didn't believe him, but she soon did. A black car waited in the underground parking lot. Rick walked toward it, and Lily followed skeptically. Two men in black emerged, each holding a black cloth. To her bewilderment, one blindfolded Rick, who offered no resistance.
Lily was stunned. She realized he'd meant itโhe truly didn't know where they were going. They even blindfolded him? Isn't the organization overly cautious?
They'd initially believed the boss was the intermediary, but Rick had taken over after Edward's kidnapping. Then, believing he was the intermediary, they discovered he didn't know everything either. No wonder the organization has remained under the radar for so long, operating globally with such incredible caution.
Before Lily could contemplate further, one of the men blindfolded her. Then, she smelled a unique scent.
