"Two days is unacceptable! We can't wait that long," Mike immediately rejected.

"How about tomorrow? I'll pick you up tomorrow morning."

"No!" Lily's response was firm and immediate. "Mike, I only promised to help you for old times' sake and Nicky's, so don't push it!"

Mike wasn't upset by Lily's rebuke, but he remained anxious. "Lily, it's not that I want to rush you, but we're running out of time. While we agreed to give you some time, you can't keep delaying indefinitely!" A strange, hoarse voice interrupted, "He'll pick you up tomorrow!"

Startled, a chill ran down Lily's spine, and the phone almost slipped from her hand. She steadied herself, sat up straighter, and asked, "Who are you?"

A high-pitched, creepy giggle filled the phone, making Lily's hair stand on end. The unsettling laughter continued until she could barely tolerate it any longer. Then, it abruptly ceased, leaving her even more uneasy.

"You'll find out who I am once you're here." The voice, now tinged with a hint of cunning cruelty, giggled like a mischievous child. "Mrs. Russell, I advise you to cooperate. Our patience is limited. You've remained unharmed thus far because you and the Russells lack significant power, but we still need you, and we intend to keep you alive. However, if you don't comply, you, your family, and those closest to you will soon learn what it means to cross us!" The last sentence was delivered through gritted teeth.

Lily clutched the phone. "Since you still need me, I advise you to be more polite. Otherwise, I'll show you what it's like to fail at the last minute!" Even before knowing his appearance, she loathed him. She had never hated anyone so intensely. It wasn't just his threats; his voice, tone, and manner were infuriating. She felt a surge of rage, wishing she could reach through the phone and strangle him.

The man responded with a contemptuous laugh. "Great, I'm looking forward to it!" He paused. "Mike will pick you up tomorrow morning at eight. I wonder who'll be the first casualty if you refuse to cooperate. Let me think… your husband? Your son? Your assistant? Or…"

"If you dare to harm any of them, I'll make you suffer immeasurably!" Lily screamed into the phone before slamming it down. Her hand trembled uncontrollably.

The unborn twins, sensing their mother's distress, stirred within her. This brought Lily back to herself. She took several deep breaths, gently stroking her belly. "Don't be afraid. Mommy will protect you. I'll protect everyone, no matter what!"
