Chapter 1727
Seeing Edward's state, Olivia rushed to his side, pushing Alexander aside. "Enough! Stop bothering him!" she exclaimed. "He was injured when he returned and hasn't fully recovered! Whatever happened, it's because of you. Please, leave him alone and let him rest." Tears streamed down her face.
Alexander started to speak, but Lily, unable to bear Olivia's distress, placed a hand on his shoulder. "Give him some time. You both need to calm down." He attempted to respond, but Lily silenced him with a look.
Alexander considered this, then released the wheelchair and stood. He looked down at Edward. "I don't know what you've been through or what you've heard, but I hope you'll think carefully about this. Though you work for me, I consider you a brother. Do you remember how I've treated you over the years?"
Edward remained averted, refusing to listen. Alexander narrowed his eyes, choosing silence.
Olivia held Edward protectively, turning her head away. "Just go. Leave us alone," she said softly.
Lily spoke gently. "Olivia, may I check Edward's pulse?"
Olivia, puzzled, looked at Lily. "His pulse?"
"Yes," Lily explained. "As you know, I'm somewhat familiar with herbal medicine. I want to assess Edward's recovery and check for internal injuries."
Lily reached for Edward's wrist. He recoiled as if burned, saying coldly, "There's no need!"
"You're injured, and I can tell you haven't received proper treatment. Your external wounds may have healed, but internal injuries are harder to detect and might not show immediate symptoms. As Olivia's friend, I mean you no harm. I wouldn't hurt you in front of her," Lily said patiently.
Olivia looked at Edward. "Why not let Lily try?"
"What the hell for?" Edward snapped. "What do you think I am, a guinea pig? Do you want me to leave, too?" He spun the wheelchair around. Olivia, shocked by his outburst, quickly stopped him.
"Don't get upset. If you don't want her to check, then don't. Getting agitated won't help you recover!" She rose and turned to Lily. "It's alright. I treated and dressed his wounds; he should be fine. Just go. If you need to talk, wait until he's in a better mood."
Despite the refusal, Lily sensed a shift in Olivia. She no longer viewed Alexander as an enemy and seemed to be questioning Edward's account. At least, she was willing to communicate. Lily nodded. "Okay. Take care of him. We'll talk later."
Olivia pursed her lips, offering no verbal response, merely gesturing for them to leave.
Alexander gave Edward a searching look before departing with Lily. Olivia followed them to the door, but Lily paused just as Olivia was about to close it. Lily discreetly mouthed something, ensuring Edward couldn't see her from that angle.
Olivia was startled and glanced back. Edward was staring away, resentment etched on his face.
