Chapter 1660
Bang! The car landed heavily, throwing Austin against the interior. Looking out the shattered window, he longed for freedom, a buzzing filling his ears. His head swam; he didn't know how long passed before he was dragged from the wreckage. His scalp felt warm, as if something was flowing down it.
The scene was chaoticโa fire raged, people screamed, sirens wailed. He seemed to hear everything and nothing at once. Then, darkness.
Putting away the boiled herbs, Lily wiped her hands, preparing to leave when hurried footsteps announced Edmund's arrival.
"Dr. Russell," he said, his face serious, "there are changes in Debbie."
Lily's heart tightened. "What changes?"
"We'll discuss on the way," Edmund replied, offering her a protective suit.
Lily quickly dressed and followed him to the ward, their conversation urgent but clear. "After you refused the infusion, Debbie stabilized three hours later. Her heart rate and fever subsidedโexactly as you predicted. However, her temperature just spiked; she's mumbling incoherently, burning up, and slipping into unconsciousness. It looksโฆ like she's about to die."
Lily stopped, her eyes widening in disbelief. Debbie is dying? How could this happen?
"All available doctors are there, including Dr. Blanc. Prepare yourself," Edmund warned, his gaze meaningful.
Lily knew this transcended Debbie's life; if something happened, she would be held responsible. She'd vowed to pay with her own life if Debbie was harmedโa vow she hadn't intended to keep so soon. It was impossible.
She quickened her pace, rushing to the ward. Many were already there, taking Debbie's temperature, attempting to cool her, preparing medication. They worked efficiently, yet a heavy atmosphere permeated the room. Dr. Blanc directed the scene, Debbie lying still on the bed, eyes closed, an oxygen mask on her pale face; she looked as if she might cease breathing.
"Let me examine her!" Lily declared, immediately moving to Debbie's bedside to check her pulse. Based on her experience, the child wasn't dying. Even with the virus's resurgence, death in such a short time seemed impossible. Lily frowned.
Just as her finger neared the child's arm, a hand slapped hers away.
