"Then..." Lily paused, then softly asked, "Where's Edward?"

Alexander's face fell, becoming solemn at the mention of the name. The situation seemed more ominous than Lily had anticipated, and her own spirits plummeted. She desperately wanted answers, yet dreaded what she might hear. If something bad happened, how would Olivia take it?

"Many died at the factory," Alexander began slowly. "Some in the war, some from the plague. I knew I couldn't stay and had to return." He paused. "The situation was chaotic. Just as we were leaving, we encountered thugs. Edward took a bullet for me..."

"Is he dead?" Lily asked, suppressing the rising sadness.

"Maybe," Alexander sighed. "He was alive when I left, but he didn't come with me. He urged me to go, saying he'd cover for me. Otherwise, I wouldn't have escaped so smoothly." His words were brief, yet Lily sensed the underlying danger and complexity. Chaos, gunfights—a desperate struggle for survival. The thought alone sent a chill down her spine.

Though infected with the plague, Alexander sat calmly, talking to her. The peril he'd faced felt unreal, like something from a television drama. I was so close to losing him. Our children were so close to growing up without a father. Her breathing grew shallow, and she squeezed his hand tightly.

"It's okay. It's all over now," Alexander reassured her, patting her hand gently and forcing a smile. "I've sent someone to check on Edward. I don't believe he'd simply die like that. He's talented and agile. The gunshot didn't hit any vital areas. Whatever it is..." He paused, seemingly trying to convince himself. Finally, he quietly mumbled, "In short, he's only dead when I see his body. I won't leave Edward in a foreign land."

Lily saw the pain in his eyes and nodded understandingly. "We'll find him. I believe Edward will be safe."

"Olivia... did you tell her?" Alexander asked.

Lily shook her head. "I didn't dare. She's pregnant. I was worried she couldn't handle it. Besides, even you were unsure of the situation. I didn't know much, so I didn't want to spread rumors."

"Then don't tell her anything yet. Wait until I hear back from my men," Alexander said firmly.
