“I have no proof!” Fabian exclaimed indignantly. He fell silent, his anger simmering. “I’ve been close to Cameron for years, yet I haven’t a shred of leverage. All I can do is constantly appease him. After all this time, he should show some appreciation. Even a dog gets a bone! He just enjoys playing the impartial judge!”

“So, what did he say? Did he not keep his promise? Did he take money from the Russell family?” Maria asked cautiously.

“How should I know?” Fabian replied impatiently, rising from the stool and settling onto the sofa. He frowned, remembering something. “Where’s Rhea?”

“She’s back at the lab,” Maria said, her arms outstretched in a questioning gesture. “Is it because of the incident with Tasia? If so, I’ll apologize to Tasia!”

“No,” Maria said firmly.

Fabian waved a dismissive hand, calming himself. He pondered Cameron’s words, sensing something amiss. “It was an accident. I saw Rhea didn’t do it intentionally. And couldn’t Tasia have let Rhea search for a bit longer? We’re family! I let Tasia come and go as she pleases; why can’t we do the same at her house? Since she’s not our daughter, she treats us like outsiders,” Maria said sadly.

“Cameron told me to tell our daughter to behave herself and that there were still scores to settle,” Fabian said.

He remained thoughtful, but Maria exploded upon hearing this.

“He said that? Really? What nonsense is this?” she cried, pacing furiously. “Does he call himself a man? We’ve helped him raise his daughter for years. I even wore myself out trying to find the miracle doctor. Can’t he see how much his daughter has improved? He’s so ungrateful!” She clapped her hands angrily. “Scores to settle? Fine. Let’s settle the score. Tasia lived and ate in our house for years, and I spent a fortune on that miracle doctor. Does he have any idea how much we’ve spent? He wants to settle the score with us? I think it should be the other way around!”

His anger spent, Fabian grew calmer. After a quiet moment of reflection, he frowned. “No, I think when he said that, he wasn’t talking about me.”

“Did Rhea offend him?” he asked thoughtfully.

Maria, still fuming, retorted, “How could Rhea offend him? She’s hardly ever home and rarely sees him. When she does, she’s always courteous. She only had a minor scuffle with Tasia, a simple fall down the stairs. Tasia wasn’t even seriously hurt. Does he really need to make such a fuss? If he’s so upset, I’ll fall down the stairs myself to make it up to his daughter!”

Her anger stemmed from her belief in her daughter’s innocence.

“What kind of crazy talk is that? If falling down the stairs would appease him, I would have pushed you down long ago!” Fabian rolled his eyes.

Maria looked puzzled.

“Something’s not right about what Cameron said today. Tell Rhea to come home. I want to speak with her properly to see if there’s something we’re missing,” he said.
