Chapter 1520
"Mike, I feel like I've only just begun to know you today. You're truly someone special, aren't you?" Lily said coldly, backing into the elevator.
"You're right. Since I've already resigned, I shouldn't be here. I'll leave now to avoid causing any further complications."
"Don't go!"
Taken aback, Rhea tried to pull Lily back, but Lily easily evaded her grasp.
"It's not his decision to make!" Rhea exclaimed angrily, glaring at Lily. "Don't you want to see my workplace? Don't you want to look for what you've left behind, to see what you want to see?" Her words were alluring yet felt like a trap. Lily offered a half-smile.
"I did, but not anymore. Mr. Corden is right. This involves your secrets, and I shouldn't pry. Goodbye!" She pressed the elevator button.
"Don't go!" Rhea tried to stop her, but Mike pulled her back. Caught off guard, Rhea stumbled into him, missing the elevator as the doors closed.
"Mike!" Rhea glared over her shoulder, enraged. Mike slowly released her hand with an indifferent expression.
"Do you know what you've done?"
Rhea felt a surge of fury, a desire to lash out, though reason cautioned her against it. 'This man is such a nuisance!' Mike offered a bland sidelong glance.
"I can ask you the same thing. If I hadn't stopped you, what would you have done? Trap her in the building? How many more people are you planning to imprison?"
"She possesses extensive knowledge of perfumery, kickboxing, and herbal medicine; her brain is likely atypical and could yield unusual lab results worth studying! You just ruined my plan!" Rhea clenched her fists, wishing she could strike him.
"Are we all just specimens to you? Not human beings?"
Turning to face her, Mike narrowed his eyes, appraising the petite woman who barely reached his shoulder. 'Frankly, if I saw her on the street, I'd think she was just a pretty, arrogant woman. I'd never imagine her to be so consumed by sick experiments and so cold-hearted.'
"So what?" Rhea raised an eyebrow, unconcerned.
"What's the difference between humans and animals? They're all insignificant in the universe. Why can animals be specimens, but not humans?"
Mike shook his head slightly. "Then what kind of specimen am I to you?"
Her fox-like eyes locked onto his. Standing on tiptoe, Rhea craned her neck and said bluntly, "Well, one day I'd love to crack your head open and see what's inside!"
"Then you might not get the chance," Mike said, a curl to his lips.
"It's hard to say. We'll have to wait and see, won't we?" Rhea turned and walked away.
Mike watched her recede into the darkness, his eyes slowly narrowing.
Lily felt a wave of relief as she stepped out of the elevator and into the sunlight.
