Chapter 1348
In the lab, Thompson clutched the hard-won results, grinning broadly. "Great! While we've only succeeded with these two herb types, it's a huge step forward. If we can overcome this hurdle, I'm sure we'll conquer all other obstacles!"
Smiling, he said to Lily, "I was worried you wouldn't return. It's best if you stay with us now."
Lily removed her gloves, washing her hands under the tap. "Professor Thompson, there are some things I want to discuss."
"What is it?" Thompson nodded enthusiastically.
"I'll return to the lab and continue the experiments, but I won't work with any strongly potent herbs," Lily stated. "If you agree to that, I'll be back permanently. Otherwise, consider the success of these two experiments my parting gift."
This meant she wouldn't return after this experiment. Thompson's smile faltered, bringing Mike's earlier warning to mind. He coughed. "Sure, we can discuss that. We should anyway."
"You know I'm pregnant now. I can't risk handling those poisonous herbs," Lily explained, finishing washing her hands and turning to face Thompson. "Plus, this research has a promising start, but the final effects on consumers are uncertain. While potent, poisonous herbs might cure diseases, we can't ignore the side effects. We must carefully observe the preparation process, and precise dosages are crucial. Infusing the medicinal content into scented candles will lead to inconsistent effects when burned. If consumers aren't careful..."
Thompson interjected, "I know. I understand your concerns, so I agree to halt experiments involving poisonous herbs. Let's focus on our current task, and we'll discuss the rest later. We'll do as you say. How does that sound?"
Lily was startled before nodding. "Okay." She wasn't sure if she was overthinking, but his quick agreement was suspicious. She'd raised this before, but he'd insisted on continuing, regardless of the difficulty, arguing that poisons were integral to medicine. Yet, he agreed so readily today. Since he did, she wouldn't dwell on it.
Nodding, she said, "Well then, that's all for today. I'm heading home."
"Okay!" Thompson replied, his gaze fixed on the two small vials. His elation was palpable. "Get some rest. You'll be more effective in the lab when you're feeling better!"
"Sure!" Lily answered, pausing a moment before leaving.
The experiment's success was expected. Future experiments shouldn't be overly challenging. However, this only heightened her worry. The same old question lingered: What was this experiment's ultimate goal? Was it truly for humanity's benefit, to explore alternative cures? With that doubt in her mind, she arrived home to find the Rollins family car still there. Anastasia hadn't left yet.
Indeed, upon entering, she saw Anastasia happily playing with Galen in a corner of the living room.
