Chapter 1728
Olivia quickly turned and tried to read Lily's lips. Just after Lily finished mouthing two sentences, Edward snapped, "Why aren't they leaving yet? Do you want them to stay and me to leave instead?"
"No, they're waiting for the elevator. I'm closing the door now!" Olivia replied quickly, gave Lily a small nod, and closed the door.
Seeing the door shut, Lily let out a barely audible sigh.
Wrapping his arm around her shoulders, Alexander walked with her toward the elevator, lowering his head. "So? What did you say to her?"
"I told her to call me without Edward knowing, and that I'd like to speak to her alone," Lily whispered, glancing back at the closed door.
"Without Edward knowing?" Alexander pressed the elevator button, raising his eyebrows.
"Yes!" Lily nodded. "Don't you think there's something very wrong with Edward?"
"How could there be anything wrong with him? He's been by my side for years. If I couldn't trust him, I couldn't trust anyone," he said, looking up at the floor number. Alexander completely trusted Edward and believed the feeling was mutual. However, Edward's attitude that day made him question his longtime friend.
"So you're not upset that Edward made such an accusation about you?" Lily cocked her head, sounding teasing.
Alexander curled his lips. "Nope!"
The elevator arrived. As the doors closed behind them, Alexander asked, "Did you try to take his wrist pulse because you suspect something is physically wrong with him?"
"Oh? Like what?" Lily curled her lips, feigning ignorance. "I just wanted to check if he's suffering from any injuries. I wasn't suspecting anything, okay?"
"No?" Alexander playfully pinched her shoulder. "Don't you think his behavior and symptoms are similar to someone we met recently?"
"Yes," Lily smiled, dropping the playful act. "Are you talking about Secretary Rollins?"
"I wouldn't have thought so without precedent. However, we just met Cameron, and we know there's a way to control people's minds. If I've guessed correctly, you wanted to check if a needle was inside him, didn't you?" He threw her a sidelong glance.
Lily sighed. "You've seen through me."
Seeing her coy look, Alexander chuckled.
She pulled a face and frowned. "But you're wrong!"
"About what?"
"You said if you couldn't trust Edward, then you could trust no one."
Alexander's premonition worsened at her words. Before he could explain, he heard her threatening voice, "Are you saying that I can't be trusted?"
"That's not what I meant!" Alexander protested.
