Chapter 1269
"This is...?" Alexander recognized some plants after spending time with Lily, but this one was unfamiliar.
Lily's joy was barely contained. "This is agarwood!"
"Agarwood?" Alexander raised an eyebrow, subconsciously repeating the name. He couldn't recall all plant names, but he knew his wife loved this one.
"You bought it?" He gently brushed her hair behind her ear, leaned in, and kissed her cheek. Lily, accustomed to his affection, leaned closer. "No, it's a gift."
Her eyes sparkled as she gazed at the plant, her love evident.
"A gift?" Alexander's eyes narrowed. "Who dares send her such a gift? Who's thoughtful enough to send my beloved wife such a wonderful present?"
Lily cared little for material possessions. She kept Alexander's jewelry in its boxes, preferring comfortable, attractive clothing. Houses and properties meant even less to her. He knew little about raw materials and, unsure what to give her, usually resorted to gift cards. This was the first time he'd seen her so genuinely delighted by a gift.
"It's from Ms. Rollins!" Lily exclaimed.
"Ms. Rollins?" He didn't recognize the name.
Lily elbowed him. "Cut the act! If you remember her from her profile picture, you should know who she is!"
Feigning pain, Alexander clutched his side. "I didn't immediately place her, okay? But why did she give you this? Did she know you liked it?"
Lily shook her head. "I've never mentioned it." Anastasia, however, knew Lily was a perfumer, having heard of her even before they met.
"Then accept the gift if you like it. I'll send Ms. Rollins a return gift when I'm free."
Lily looked at him. "There's no need. I already gave her a dress; this is her return gift."
"Oh, that was fast." Alexander was surprised. His wife's social skills weren't as bad as he'd imagined. "The dress you took from her?"
"Uh-huh." Lily nodded, leaning closer to the plant. "It's gorgeous, and it smells divine! I wonder where Ms. Rollins acquired such a precious..." She paused, then looked at Alexander. "It's legal to keep, right?"
"What?" Alexander was bewildered. Why would the plant be illegal?
"Agarwood is protected under the Endangered Species Act. I've always wanted one, but never had the chance. Though, I heard some people grow them!" Lily cocked her head, seemingly talking to herself and Alexander simultaneously.
Alexander was speechless. Watching her lovingly examine the plant, he felt a pang of jealousy, pulling her close.
"Hey!" Lily reached for a leaf, falling against him and accidentally plucking it off.
