Chapter 1196

"You haven't much of an appetite lately. Are you tired?" Alexander asked. "Perhaps we should skip the hospital visit later? My aunt and the maids are thereโ€”more than enough to care for Grandma. She'll be released in a few days anyway."

"Can she be discharged with her condition?"

"The doctor says it's fine. She doesn't need to stay; she's just old."

Since the incident a few days prior, Alexander could discuss Margaret's condition calmly. He had too much to face, too much to do. He couldn't afford to be ruled by emotion.

Lily nodded. "Then I won't go to the hospital for a few days. I'll visit Grandma when she's home."

She was tired. Rubbing her temples, she said, "There's something I want to discuss."

"Yes?" Alexander met her gaze, ready to listen.

After a moment's hesitation, she began softly, "I think we should postpone the wedding."

"Why?" Alexander was surprised. "Is something wrong?"

Lily shook her head, rubbing her visibly pregnant belly. "Too much has happened recently. Grandma's unwell, and the family has a lot on its plate. Plus, I need to get my wedding dress altered."

Smiling, she continued, "I spoke with Justin. He's busy in Azalea and may not be able to return. Let's postpone the wedding. You know I'm not fussed about formalities. Let's talk about it again after the baby arrives."

Lily wasn't particularly attached to the idea of a large wedding. She'd agreed to it because Alexander wanted her to have the traditional experience. But with Margaret's illness, Ralph's unresolved situation, and the lingering effects of the family's recent turmoilโ€”despite their outward composureโ€”Lily felt a postponement was necessary.

"Will you be upset?" Alexander asked gently, wiping a corner of her lip with a tissue.

"No," she replied thoughtfully.

"We'll do what you want." After a pause, Alexander nodded. He respected her decision. In fact, he mused, they could wait a few years and have their child be the flower girl or boy. That seemed delightful.

They smiled, a picture of serene contentment. Then a maid entered. "Mr. Russell, a gentleman wishes to see you. He says he works for Ms. Riggs."

"Heather Riggs?" Lily exclaimed, meeting Alexander's eyes. "Or perhapsโ€ฆ the person impersonating her?"

"Should we meet them?" Alexander asked.

"Let's see what she's up to. This is our territory," Lily said, a knowing glance at Alexander, though he already seemed to have an answer.

The maid left to announce the visitor. Long-term employment had taught her that Lily's words carried significant weight in the household.

The couple moved to the living room. A maid served fruit tea as another led the guest in. Lily recognized the guest, though it felt like a long time since their last encounter.

"It's you?"
