The final time Ralph approached the table, he carried a magnificent bouquet of fiery red roses. "Heather!" Hannah gasped as Ralph knelt, presenting the bouquet. A violinist began to play, drawing the attention of other patrons.

"Heather, although we're engaged, I feel I owe you a proper proposal. If you say yes, I'll ensure you live happily ever after. Will you marry me?" He opened a small brocade box, revealing a large, dazzling diamond ring.

Stunned by his seemingly echoing voice, Hannah murmured, "Happily ever after..." The promise intrigued her, despite its inherent unreality. She longed for such happiness, yet felt unworthy of it, with anyone. Inner turmoil plagued her. Ralph, observing her silence, remained clueless to her thoughts. He couldn't fathom her.

He wondered if he'd offended her. Could I have upset her by proposing this way? If she attacks me, I'll be utterly disgraced! He suddenly regretted the public display. A refusal, or worse, would make him a laughingstock among his friends. What's done is done. I can't retract it now.

Holding the ring and bouquet, he remained kneeling, his smile stiffening. Sweat beaded on his forehead. Just as he was about to give up, she asked, "Are you... proposing to me?"

Stunned, Ralph looked down at his offerings. "Can't you tell?" I'm on one knee, with the ring and flowers, I just asked! How does she not understand? Did I miss something, or fail to be clear? "Please ask me again," she said solemnly, taking a deep breath and turning to him.

Ralph was speechless. She's unpredictable. No yes, no no, no physical violence. But to repeat it all? Does she think I'm an MP3 player? Nevertheless, he dared not protest. "Heather—"

"Don't call me that," Hannah interrupted.

Taken aback, Ralph asked, "How about Annie?"

Seeing her smile, he continued, "Well, Annie, I'm asking you to marry me. I'll make sure you're well cared for, and that you'll live happily ever after!"
